THE EVENING STAR. > The Largest Cireuiation in the District W. D. WALLAOCH, Editer and Prepricter. WASHINGTON OITY: TUESDAY......--.00+se000e.JULY 23, 1867. S7 READING MATTER ON BVERY PAGE. SEB OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TBLI- GRAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER. FOR THE ACCOMMODATION OF PERSONS leav- ing the city during the summer months they can bave the Stak mailed to their address, by ordering the same at the office, for 12 cenis pet week, for one week or more. NEWSPAPER BOUNCE. For some cause not quite intelligible to the ‘unsophisticated, several of our cotemporaries ®ave gone into the business, lately, of at tempting to outbrag each other in regard to circulation. According to flaming statements Nguring at the head of their editorial columas, there must be a perfect rush, spasm, and ma- miaon the part of everybody to subscribe to wewspapers at this, usually dull season of the year; and every newspaper of them is in- creasing in circulation at the rate of many thousands per diem. A gentleman of a math- ‘ematical turn of mind in our office has made a calculation, in which he figures up that, ta- king these statements as gospel, the united circulation of the papers in question must reach some 250,000 copies daily, which tells pretty well for us as a reading people: ‘The only fear is that this enormous consump- ion of printing paper may result in a ruinons increase oi price in that article, which would work badly for us all. Seriously. however, ‘we submit that this sort of “bounce” deceives nobedy, and lowers the reputation of the pro- tession. A copy of yesterday’s issue of a city paper, in which the modest claim was put for- ‘ward ofa Jack-of-the-bean-stalk growth, over- topping all its cotemporaries, was placed last night upon the desk of every member of the City Councils, probably to influence action upon the pending resciution, designating the papers to which the corporation advertis- ing sbould begiven. But wedo not suppose that a single member was humbugged by this auetioneer style of The fact is, as we such representations really deceive nobody. There is not 4 newspaper office in the eity in which the number of copies, within a hundred; printed daily by each and every one of its co- temporaries is not known; and also how many of these are given away, or sold te newaboys ate nominal price. Neither are the people deceived. for every man in the community knows what paper is most taken in bis Beighborhood. We do not propose to follow the example of our contemporaries, but have only to say that the Star pursues the even tenor of its way. It has mever jumped ap ‘with mushroom growth by the thousand. but has steadily increased in circulation year by year with the growth of thecity. Guradver- tising columns show for themselves, and need Bo vouchers to tell what paper is recognized by the people as the most desirable advertising medium; and as there is scarce a family in the District not visited daily by the Srar, it would besuperfiuous to vouch toanentirecommunity of our subscribers concerning its circulation, When, however, any definite test of circula- tion is required, we shall be able to show | indisputably—ist, that the STa® has more than double the number of subscribers in the Dis- trict that any other paper has; and, 2d, that our daily circulation is, very nearly, if not quite double that of any other paper pub- ished here. NE Co-operation which 18 reccommended by many political economists as the remedy for “strikes” and “lock-out” isnow having a fair trial in the State of New York. In New York City, meetings of workmen are held nightly, and every day adds to the numberof co-opera. tive stores and work shops The Printer’ Union there, organized in November last, is aid to be doing a fine business, and the same may be said of other societies. The Troy co-operation stove feundry bas been a great success, and isabout io establish a branch in New Yor City: | A co-operative stove foundry was also begun last winter in Albany with great suc- cess, and soon enlarged its works. A similar establishment Rochester, were begun early last month. The Oo.operative Carpenters’ Society of Al- bany, established last March, bas more orders than itcan attend to, and that of the painters in Oswego has been doing well since its begin- ging in April. There will be a nataral ten. dency among the members of these societies | to connect themselves with co-operative stores, ‘where they will obtain the necessaries of life @t wholesale prices. THE IMPEACHMENT COMMITTEE. The committee met yesterday ang examined several witnesses, principally as to statements of General Baker. rom, a witness for the defense in the Surratt trial, will be examined in reference to his par- don. We also leara that it is expected the committee purpose an adjournment to the 13th | of November. after the examination of this witness shall have been completed. THEIR FIRST MORTGAGE BONDS AS AN INVESTMENT. ‘The rapid progress of the Union Pacific Railroad, how building west from Omaha, Nebraska, and forming, with its western connections, an un- broken line across the continent, attracts attention to the value of the First Mortgage Bonds which the Company now offer to the public. The first ques- tion asked by prudent investors is, “Are these bonds secure”? Next, “Are they a profitable investment ?”’ To reply in brief: Ist. The early completion of the whole great Hine to the Pacific is as certain a8 any future Dusiness event.can be, The Government grant of |, over twenty million acres of Jand and fifty million dollars in its own bonds. practically guarantees it. One-fourthof the work is aiready done, and the track continues to be laid at the rate of: two miles a 24. The Union Pacific Ratroad bonds are issued ‘upon what promises to be one of the most profit: able lines of railroad in the country. For many years it must He the only line connecting the At. lantic and Paci tic; end being without competition, itcan maiptain remunerative rates. ‘8d. 316 miles of this road are finished, and fally equipped with depots, locomotives, cars, &c.,and two trains are daily rufming each way. The ma. teridls'for the remaining’ 141 miles to the eastern base of the Rocky Mpuntains are on hand, and is under conttact to be done in September. 4th. The net earnings of the sections already finished are several times xreater than the gold in. terest upon the First Mortgage Bonds. upon sich sections. and if not another mile of the road were built. the part already completed would not only pay interést and expenses, hut be profitable to the unpany: Sth. The Union Pacific Railroad bonds can be ssued only as the road progresses, and therefore can never be in the market unless they represent 4 bonafide property. 6th. Theiy amount is strictly limited by law to a sum equal to what is granted by the United States Government, and for which it takes a second lien as ite security. This amount upon the first’ 517 miles west from Omaha is only $16.0°8 per mile. 7th. The fact that the United States Government considers a second lien upon the road a good in vestment, and that some of the shrewdest railroad builders of the country have already paid in five million dollars upon the stock (which is to them a third lien) may well inspire confidence ‘in a first lien. 8th. Although itis not claimed that there can be any better securities than Governments. there are partics who consider a first mortgage upon such a property as this the very best security in the world and who sell their Governments to re-invest in these Donds—thus securing a greater interest. 9th. Asthe Union Pacific Railroad bonds are of fered for the present at 99 cents on the dollar and accrued interest, they are the cheapest security in the market, being 16 per cent. less than U. 8. Stocks. loth. At the current rate of premium on gold, they pay OVER NINE PER CENT. INTEREST. The daily subscriptions are already large, and they will continue to be received in Washington by the FIRST NATIONAL BANK, NATIONAL BANK OF THE REPUBLIC, and RITTENHOUSE, FOWLER & CO., and by BANKS AND BANKERS generally throughout the United States, of whom maps and descriptive pamplalets may be obtained. They will also be sent by mail from the Company's Office, No. 20 Nassau street, acribers will select their own Agente in whom theY haye confidence, who alone will be responsible to them for the safe delivery of the bonds.
