THE EVENING STAR. ————— ————SS A Sad Family History Brought to Lig im Chica, [From the Chicago Tribune, July sth.j A very remarkable chapter of private family troubles was brougbtto light at tne Police Court on Saturday morning, where Mra: Marv Lanurits and Lawrence Laurits were charged with a@uitery. About four weeks ago Mrs. Lanrits, wife of John Laurits, a wholesail and retail dealer in groceries on Seventeenth street New York, started upon a visitto New Ur- jesus. Her husband, who is a wealthy gentle- man, had always surrounded her with every comfort, and her life had scarcely known & single hardship. She had ber choice between a visitto Germany and one tothe Crescent City. She ehose the latter. and prepared an extensive wardrobe for a protracted visit. Be- ride her clothing, worth about $1,900, her hus- band supplied ber with £4,000 in money, and she left, as he supposed, for New Orleans. He was not alittle amazed and humiliated to re- cetve information, a few days ago. from acor- respondentin this city, to the effect that his ‘wife had been here three weeks and was living With his brother; Lawrence, ss the wife of tbe jatter. Upon the receipt o/ this intelligence, ‘Mr. Lauritz immediately started tor Chicago. ‘Of the several members of the Lanrits family all residing in New York, and were prosper- ipgin business except Lawrence, who had been alienated from them for years, and pur. sued encb alife that they were glad of hi absence. His brother Jobn had not seen him for several years, his last recollections being ofa painfnl character, for it was known to him a long time since that Lawrence had per- sletently attempted to poison his domestic hap- piness by a clandestine correspondence with his wife, im which he tried to prevail upon her to leave home and join him ina distant part ofthe country. The affair wasnow breught io a ead culmimation, and the wife who bad reeeived nothing but kindness from bim for more than twenty years had at last forgotten her marriage vows, fled from her house, and compromieed her good name. Upon arriving in this city, on Friday atternoon, John ascer- tained that his brother Lawrence was keeping 2 low saloon a few doors from the bridge, on ‘Weet Randolph street, and that Mrs, Lanrits was, at least, living in the same honse with him. Securing the services ofa policeman, ‘Mr. Lanrits visited the place about dark. The officer stood outside while the other went in- side. The first person he met was his brother. They recognized each other at once, and Lawrence immediately drew a revolver and ordered bim toleave. The officer hearing these words immediately advanced, and told the desperate man toput up his weapon. Their business was stated, and Lawrence denied tbat the other's wife was there. but when in- formed that it was their itention to search ube premises, he admitted the factand con- nected them to ber presence. Their first meeting was * strange one. The euilty wife ‘was overpowered with bumiliation and ebame. Durme ber brief stdy with her para- mour, her life haddad already been a hard She had been required to perform un- d labor. and her heal'h had been im paired e eady in great mental suf- fering from the course she had undertaken. and tbe unlooked-for appearance of her hui dant was only needed to completly break down her feelinge. She was so much changed tha. he ecarcely recognized her at first, and he im- pulsively exclaimed, “Is this my wite?” The tons was affection: and the face of the ‘woman was for 8 moment expressive of an unexpected pleasure, but when she remember- ed the pastshe was again overwhelmed with wadnees, and conld not speak. Lawrence Laurits and the wife were arrested and taken to the Union Street Police Station, whence they were brought to the Police Court. The appearance of the two brothers was in marked contrast. Jobn wasa tall, well formed, tine Jooking mas. with a frank and honest coun- tenapace, while the other was short in statue, and with cosree and repulsive features. It Appearsthat $1,500 of the money which Mrs. Laurits brought had been invested in the faloon business, but therest had been preserv- ed. There was no evidence to convict them ofadultery, and as her husband was willing to receive her to bis Rome agaim. and she gud enough o go, the case was dismissed. ing the court room. the parties stopped in the hall, Mrs. Laurits being very desirous that the money returned to her by the police should be counted over by ber husband. While the Iat- Yer was countingit his brother strack hima cowardly blow upon his head. At the same moment another miscreant, named Bender, ‘who was a bar tender for Lawrence Lanrits, theatened that he would take the lifeof John Laurits before he left the city. The two bel- digerents were arrested and taken inside, ‘where each was fined S100and required to give bail of $500to keep the peace. Elopement and Embezzlement at Beston. About a fortnight ago a young man named Ww. T. Barry. a broker doing business at No. 4 Brattle Square. suddenly disappeared, taking with him $:,060 werth of jewelry be: longing to Federhen & Co.. jewellers, 61 Court Rtreet, which bad been entrusted to his care. “About thé same time a young lady of Chelsea, named Alice A. Bartlett, as mysteriously left her paternal roof, and, as she had been rather intimate with Barry of late, it was at once sui mised that she bad accompanied the brok aforeesid on his jaunt of pleasure. The impro- priety of the proceeding was greatly enhanced y the fact that Barry left behind hima wife and child. Detective Wade, of the State police, in company with a brother of the wife, ararted on Tuesday last in pursuit of the missing pair, ‘who, it was discovered, had direeted their err- ing course toward the great West. The pursu- ts proceeded to Albany and Rochester, bat found no traces ot the couple, and then contin- ued on to Buffalo, where they separated, each to explore on a different trail. At the Niagara Falls depot in Buffalo the detective unex, Epect= faly discovered the pair just in the act of em. ‘ing for the Falla. The detective of course ‘accompanied them on their journey to the In- terpationa) Hotel, where the couple registered as W.T. B.and lady,” and the detective, tak- ing the pen from the fingers of :he broker, wrote his own signature directly below. This was on the morning of the Fourth. Alter the pair hhad been refreshed with a breakfast they called dor a carriage and enjoyed a ride over the Sus- pension Bridge to the Canadian side, returning to the hotel atnightfall. Inthe evening the: participated in a «bop” at the International, tbe detective remaining incoy all the while, and Bo doubt a highly interested spectator of the scene. The next day, finding that Barry had purchased tickets for the West, the detective proceeded in advance to Buffalo, and with the assistance of bis companion arrested the pair just as they were embarking ona steamer for Cleveland. The prisoner was then charged ‘with embezzlement and aduitery, and was brought back to this city with the officer. The girl also voluntarily made one of the party. ‘The broker will probably be arraigned at the Municipal Court in a tew days. but is at pres- ent at large under bail. The trunks of the broker were examined yesterday afternoon at Major Jones’ office, and were found to contain about =2,(00 worth of jewelry of all kinds. Barry is about 27 years of age, and has a very genteel and prepossessing appearance. His consort in this affair is a young lady of con- widerable beauty, and very respectably con- nected. Itis stated that he will plead guilty, apd thata bill of divorce will soon be peti- uoned for by the injured wife.—Boston Post. A CuRIOsITY.—The wooden shoe which Paganini made into a violin is now for sale in Paris. The fact that the artist played on this hovel instrument is, in the handwriting of the great musician, recorded on a slip of paper now to be seen pasted on the sabot-violin for sale in tne Rue Vivienne. Mies Hawkes saw that her mother was very much frightened, and asked permission to go and obtaim a glass of water for her. He coolly replied that he would get it for her; that he knew the house as well as she did—and get the water he did. He mades thorough examination of the room, securing two gold watches, one of which had a chain of gold and jet. After securing this amount of booty, he went into the drawing-room, where be captured two boxes of paper collars and a well worn hat, though there were other articles of value which he did not seem disposed to take. After securing this amount of plander, he quietly lighted ® cigar, sat down in the room of Mrs. Hawkes, and in spite of the pro- testations of the occupants, smoked it—imqui- ring in the meantime where they came from and how long they bad lived in Leg ane Tarn- ing to Miss Hawkes, he Impu: ly asked her ‘where the other girl was that wont ‘with her se muc no donbt, her sister-in-law. DaMAGES yoR INJURIES sustained from railroad accidents are usually awarded vy juries without much cavil, for there seems always to be a prejudice against corporations. Two curious eases, brought by persons in England inst railroad companies. are re- orted. A Mr. Martin sued the London and jorthwestern Railroad. His case was that he bad taken passage in the Scotch mail train; that as the train moved out of the depot it ran inte some cars that had been left by accident om the track, and that the shock injured his spine. A great deal ef medical testimony was taken, and it was somewhat discordant. Five physicians testified that in their opinion th. case was likely to have an unfovorable termi. nation. Un the contrary, threeother physicians testified that Mr. Martin bad no disease of the spine, and would soon recover; whilst a fourth declared that the plaintifr fancied that be suffered pain, apd would get quite well as soon as the lawsuit wat ended. The jury awarded $2,500 d » In addition to $3,750 previously paid the plaintiff by the com. pany The second suit was that of a Mr.Chap- man, who sued the Brighton Company for damages. Hix case was that in 1965 he sent a mare from Brighton to Corydon in the care of @ groom; that the horse-box in which she was placed was out of repair, the nails sticking fivcaah the padding, and that in consequence she received injuries which made it necessar’ to kill her six months terwards. In this case there was but one novel feature. Usual- ly it is the cue of the plaintif to enbanoce the value of bis property, and that of the com- pany to cry it down. But the groom had signed the contract note for the transportation of the animal without specifying that she was ‘worth more than $200. Hence, if the company: proved that the mare had that, or a greate} value, they would be freed from liability. Thie reversal of the usual tactics ereated much amusement in the bar. The damages finally given were $236.—Phila. Ledger. 7 “He leaves two wives and three children to mourn his loss,” are the concluning words of a Utah obituary notice.
