Editor of the Express. Un your article of Sat- urday’s paper you speak of the Washington and Georgetown Ice Company asa monopoly. The eppareut candor and fairness the Express bas exhibited vince its publication leads me to conclude that no,injustice was intended, yet a simple statement of facts, which I hope you will allow me to make through your colnm: will show that we were not justly represent. ed. We consolidated because we. like three drunken men. could stand holding on to each other.;butjneither'conld standalone. Every one knows that for the last three years there has been a very close competition between the three ice firms now consolidated, and the re- sult was, thatat'be commencement of the year our condition was like that ot the “Kilkémny Onte.” we had but little left. Each of us were traversing the whole city. An owl at noon- day could have seen that were aif these teams controlled by one there could be a saving of twenty-five per cent. of the expense. We consolidared for that purpose. We reduced ihe number of wagons to the lowest possible number. Allour expenses were rigidly cur- tied. and webave, since January 1. 1867,con- ancred our opersiions on a system more economical. as 1 find by receu: inspection, than the ice compinies or firms of Boston, New York, or Piuiadeiphia. But by our trea: surer’s statement. farmished us July 1. 136 the not very pleas int fact stares us in the face tha) we Bave not, to this date, made one cent prof. citowimg nothing for wear and tear, hich every one knows is large. Our tre: rer, Henry ©. Jewell, Esq., corner ‘Twelth and F streets, is at liberty to exhib our books to any one enongh interested to call Now the practical question arises, can ice ie retailed in this city, in amounts over 100 pounds daily. tor {ity cents per hundred? Aiilictea creditors will tell that it cannot be, for about one-half of the ive shipped to this cily for the st Ira yeats bas not been paid for, and pre- yions to that, ifmy memory serves me, was seldom peid for. All epstoms less than 2) pounds daily is aloss to the dealer, at 1’, cent We bought the Grea: Falls Tce Compary’s ice, and, although we regret to say it, vo man can selljunat ice in warm, or rather jot” weather, at 50 cents per hundred and sy hi- bills. Allonr customers can testify of or else their complaints are unjust. The breakage in canal aqueduct compels us, tor about 'wo weeks, to team our tce purchased of | thi. company from Georgetown. Indoing this we suffer in expesure and meltage nearly, ii not gute, four dollars per ton. We hope soon. | to retail Boston ice. To ensble us to retail ice at last year's rates we reduced the number of teams, and worked the harder. But people complain of the lateness of the delivery ot ice. ‘We musi have more teams. thusincreasingour expenses, and, as anataral consequence inour | epleted covdition must have a greater price ‘This we have determined todo. All family custom (consulting our own interesi) we do not crave, butit is a necessity. and no pains on eur part eball be spared to furnish them as prompily and faithfally as weshould do did it pay as well. Abuses will arise from extor- tion and short weight on the part of drivers. Customers must see for themeeives that they. fre not cheated. For repeated offences I ai- ‘ways discharge employees We instruct them to give full weight: but common senseand a little reflec:ion will show that it is werth ten cents to callon a tamily with a “two-norse team” and two men, saying nothing about ice. An ordinary load of ice will melt more than ten pounds while they are delivering ten | pounds, however agile they may be. Qurrule from the begining has been, and now is, to make ten cents per hundred on all ice sold. If we cannot do that, then other hands must peddle ice rather than mine. We are satisfied with that. but nothing less. In Boston they are now getting nearly our prices, and in Philadelphia they get more than we do, notwithstanding in both ofthese cities. from more general use of it, they can saves 1030 percent. on expense of delivery. We bsve inverted in horses over six- teen thousand doflars subject alike as they are to accident and disease, I: seems that no reflect- ing man, not controlled by selfishuess, would ov ject to paying a fair remunerative price furan article so capficious and wasting as ice.
