THE EVENING STAR. A Man Beats his Wife to Death. [From St. Louis Times, June 29th. } Yesterday one ofthe most brutal murders commi:ted in our midst for a long time occurr- ed in an alley on Spruce street. near Foar- teenth, William Gahan beating bis wife to death. The circumstances of the ease, as de- yeloped at tbe coroner’s inquest. show that some four years since (jaban married the de- ceased, she being his second wife. By his first wife he had fonr children, who have been repeatedly ill-treated by deceased, who was addicted to habits of intemperance. The other evening he turned her out ofthe house. for being drunk, when she slept on the porch. On the next morning, Friday. she knocked at the door and promised to reform her ways if he would take her baekagain. To this Gahan consented, and lefther with thechildren, going to hie daily work. Scarcely had he got out of sight, when deceased sent one of the children out for ten cents’ worth of whisky. which dose she repeated, and then sending her with some eggs. having nomore change, she received and drank the third dose of rotgut. When this began to work upon her, she commepved abusing the children, beating them sonndly. One of the smallest girls ran away. and pro- ceeding to ber father's shop on Market street, told bim what was going onat home. This was about ten o'clock, and Gahan immediately Jefi his work, pertectly sober, and accompani- ed his child home. When he had reached the Toom, an upper garret, he drove the children down staire, and seizing a board. struck his wife two blows on the head, which felled her to the ground, atter which he beat her body for a long time, until life was utterly extinct. Her bodytas it lay stretched upon the floor of the dismal tenement, presented a ghastly and hor- Tible spectacle. She was almost ina nude state, and scarcely a spot of flesh could be found that was not covered with bruises, abrasions and blood. while near by stood the instrument of death, matted with blood and hair. Some of the blows were evidently of ‘old standing. About two o'clock officer Gazello, hearing of the muraer, repatred to the spot and ar- rested Gahan, who said he was just on his way forthe Coroner. He madeno denialot the crime. and said ne had merely «spanked” her for being drunk, and she had died. The Coroner held an inquest the jury ren- dering a verdict that deceased came to her death by blows received at the hanas of Rer husband. She was a rather pretty woman D@t twenty-eight years of age and had no rel- atives here. ‘The murderer was a mechanic inthe employ of Worstendick & Eaton. silver platers, No. 1,20 Market street, and wa3 considered a first-class workman. The eldest child ts four- teen years old. and the youngest about six— all girl. MBDICAL EXAMINATIONS BOR INSURANCE. Mr. Pinkard, at the recent annual meeting of the Sovereign Life Insurance Company, Lon- don, adverted to the selection of lives, and re- Warked that he did not consider the medical advice worth anything if the person examined ‘Were strangers to the medical officer who ex- amined them. He thought it far better to get the opinion of the propeser’s own medical attendant. A case was mentioned where a ‘man of high recpectability was accustomed to go Away from home and indulge in periodical fits of debauchery, of which many of his inti- mate triends were unaware. Having nerved himself by stimulants, he came before the medical officer of an insurance society and passed an admirable examination—the medi- adviser declaring him to be as good a life asever came before him. Cases of this kind must be of constant occurrence where the of- fice fails to obtain the report and epinion of the proposed insurer’s ordinary medical at- tendant. In fact, it ie unsafe to insure a life without such information. The most experienced Practitioner might be deceived, or fail to detect the real state of a persons health by a single examinatien. however long and careful it might be. The system of employing the in- surer’s own medical attendant by the offices 4nd paying him for his report is, adds the London Lancet, (our authority on the present cccasion,) steadily and surely gaining ground: the offices opposed to it are now becoming the exceptions The American Life insurance Companies, in addition to having the opinion of their own physicians are in the practice of getting from ‘the proposer a statement of his bodily health, habits, &c., from his regular medical atten- dapt, whem he pays more or less willingly for his services. € Born In A SrREeT Can.—Tne New Orleans Picayune relates the following: “During the rain storm on Tuesday after- noon, @ young German woman, while riding in & Dryades street car, was suddenly seized with the premonitory pains of Iabor. The car was crowded, but when a knowledge of the facts was fully received by the passengers, a seatteration ensued as if a Hghted bomb had fallen in their midst. Messrs. B. and M., two confirmed bachelors, bowever, held their posi- tions and gallantly offered their services in any way that they could be made available. Giving the approaching mother into the charge of some ladies who happily came to the rescue, the improvised practitioaers hur. riedly procured the services of a female acconcher, and the result was, in a short time, the exhibition to the attendants of a fine boy, who. by the way, seemed to take no particula! notice of his own rather unusual and abrapt appearance upon the stage of life. The event created considerable excitement in the neigh- borhood, and the ladies, whose natural sym- pathies were aroused by the occurrence, soon Provided temporary accommodations for the little stranger and bis mother, both of whom, ‘we are happy to inform our readers, are doing 88 well ss could be expected. Our two bachelors, considering their limited experience in such affairs, acquitted themselves in a cred- atable manner.” ARTIFICIAL Ick.—The hot weather and the great consumption of ice suggests the propriety of explaining how ice may be made artificial- ly. The process is simple and beautiful. The principal thing required is a good air-pump. On the top of the air-pump set a plate contain- ing sulphuric acid; place a small stool in the Plate, and on the stool setasmali tray with water in it. Over all place a low glass cover. Atting air-tight. The pump being werked, the alr is drawn out, ard with the removal of the pressure the water evaporates rapidly. It soon begins to boil in consequence of the de- velopment of heat. Meanwhile the vapor, cairying the heat away with it, is absorbed by the sulphuric acid, Thustbe wateris actnally frozen eolid while it seems to boil. Whether the apparatus could be improved or the prin- ciple be used for the production of ice in large Uanities remaines tobe proved. But if the art cf manufacturing ice on a large scaleshall be discovered (and the germ of it exists in this experiment) we may expect to see ice factories established. In fact, experiments have already been made, with a fair share of success, in the production of artificial ice AL & cost mich less than that of the blovis left at our doors by the ice-carts.—J. F. Pos. ——— Six CHILDREN DrownED.—Six children, be- tween the ages of 7 and 15 years, were yester- day, about 2 o'clock p.m.. in'a dug-out on Wolf river, near its mouth. on a swimming excursion ,when tbe boat upset, and the whole of them were drowned. One of them, named Pat. Murphy, was abie to swim, and might Rave gotout, but hfs younger brother, John, caught hoid of fg, and doth went down. The names of the other victims were John Brophy, Henry Marshatl, John Welsh, and Ned Fitz: simmons. A man on shore saw the accident, aod tried to throw ropes and boards te the drowning children; but they failed to get hold of them. and all his efforts were unavailing. The body of John Brophy was recovered last evening. None of the others have been found Memphis Avalanche. June 29. DEATH FROM SWALLOWING GLAss.—A young lady named Jennie Rupert, about six- feen years of age, residing near Mull creek, Huntingdon county, died under peculiar and Gustressing circumstances on Saturday. On ‘Thursday evening last she attended a party where some article of glassware was acci- dentally broken on the table. and 2 piece of the giass somehow found its way into Miss Ra- pert’s food. It lodged in her throat, and all efforts to remove it proved ineffectual. She dingered in great agony until Saturday, woen death came to her relief—Harrisburg Tele. graph. — Se'The working classes in England make more money than al! others combined. Tae number of Isboring people is set down at 11,018,616, and their annual incomeisestimated in the aggregate at $2.(00,000,000in gold. Dr. Trimble baving made thesubdject of birds and insects, as they rela'e to the garden and orchard, & matter of islstudy and obser- yation, the following extracte from his ad- dress in relation thereto, “As reported in the Newark Advertiser, cannot fail to interest all parties, and especially thore who would pro« tect the birds, as the fruit-grower’s co-work- ers, notwithstanding they eat some fruit; for it should be remembered that they teed more or Jees on insects and their larve for many months of tne year, while itis comparatively & short space of time that they. peck at frulis of the different species and various varieties. Would it not be be: toemploy persons fora few days to keep them away from fruit plots, than to engage in their indiscriminate des- traction? So itseems to many who have con- sidered this matter in the light of rural and horticultural economy. Of the Baltimore Oriole, that beautifal bird | and charming songster, Dr. Trimbie said: “They are becoming numerous, and when | they first arrive they feed on leaf-curtling caterpillars, so injurious to fruit and orna- mental trees and shrabs; alsoupon the canker- ‘worm, that destructive pst, and later in the season upon the drop-worm.” He stated that, by the aid of the microscope, he had heen able to prove positively that the orioles feed upon that terrible enemy of the fruit-grower—the | curcnlio; that a small portion ofa head, sup- Posed to be that of a curculio, was found &mongst the commin uted contents of the crop of one ofthese birds and the microscope enabied him to count the 147 lenses in one of the eyes—the exact number known to make the eye of this particular species of the curculio. | The Downy Woodpecker is one of the most | valuable birds of our country. It knows where to find. and is busy in searching out, | the applewerm—the second in importance or the insect enemies, which, with the curculio, sre the chief cause of the rnin of the fruit bus iness, especially in our State. { The Li ttle Chick-a-dee also feeds upon the | apple-worm. but finds it accidentally, and not | by boring for it, as does the downy wood- cker. Perne Cedor Bird, sometimes called the Qherry | Bird, (Canker Bird) said Doctor T., isa gross | feeder, consuming immenée numbers of canker | worms and of injurious insects This bird | and the yellow bird, or finch, resemble each | other in one respect, both remaining in flocks, | til midsummer, and are thus on hand in great numbers when their services are mostrequired; | Ww! most other birds are at home attending | to their domestic duties. The cedar birds are | found in New York and Philadelphia in large flocks in June, after the worms.and if they | could be properly protected by closing the | te | parke, 80 that they shonid not be frightened away by the people, they wonld do much | towards ridding those citfes of these pests. | The yellow birds, in immense flocks. are found | in wheat fields where the midge isso destruc- | tive. They are in pursuit of the larv:e of these | flies in the heads of the wheat, while the grain js inthe milk; and farmers sometimes have | supposed these birds are the cause of the trouble, not knowing that they are their best | friends. The Warblers inciuce nearly forty species of small birds, and are exclusively insectivorous, most of which are very heautiful, and many | of them sweet singers. In the spring they | } feed on plant lice, as found im orchards; in the fall, as they emigrate to the South, they stop and feed on the late brood of Palmer worms thatso infest our elm and mapletrees, | thus becoming exceedingly fat. ‘Th Whippoorwill is a nocturnal bird, and its beak is rmed thatit takes in moths asa net takes in fish. The eyes of flies enable | them to see al] around them, and the muscular | forve of their wings isso quick that they can dodge the rain drops in ashower; yettheswal- low and the house martin feed almost excla- sively on winged ineects, which are taken on the wing by theee wrial feeders. The foregoing are good and substantial rea- sons why birds should be preserved. [et these suffice for the present; and there can hardly be a doubt that, when all the reasons for preserving birds are weighed against the | few for destroying them. they will be permit- | ted to live, and sing todelight the lovers of Na- ture, = ‘Well as to destroy vermin —Farm and Fireside. Revorm 1x Rivinc Dexsszs.—No costume | i more utterly unsnitable fer the purpose could be devised than the present style of habit adopted by ladies in riding. They could hard- | ly get into a worse habit, and it is cheering ta know that they are makeing endeavors to get out ofit. How long will it be before ladies on the Atlantic slope will follow the sensible ex- ample of their sisters in Marysville, California? ‘We quote; | They propose to throw away the cumber- | some and horse-gcaring flounc? and adopt the Turkish style of Habit, use the male saddle. and mount their steeds the same as‘-other folks.’* And why not! Physicians recommend in- | valids te take exercise on horseback. But this remedy, under the prevailing custom of riding on sidesaddies, is quiteas much to be feared as the disease, and many of the ladies think they may &s well die of consumption as broken | backe or crushed brains. The ladies have been taking this matter under serious consid- eration of late, and have bravely resolved to dety old fogyism and rideassense and comfort dictate, We unaerstand a party composed of five or six of our most respectable citizens are preparing their Turkish dresses and will be Teady to take the alron horseback the latter part ofthis week. We notice this atyle of rid- ing is being introduced among the English ladies, and the mothers of Yankee boysshoald | not be excelled by the matrons of cld fogy England. Smwevrar Divorce Casz.—The New York Tribune says :—--T'ne (zroendyke divorce case | is termmated. Mrs. Groendyke sued for a divorce on the ground of cruelty. The jury found bim guilty, but before the decree was renderea she was caught in flagrant delictu with George Warner She excused herself saying she was engaged to marry him after her divorce. The husband filed a cross bill and obtained a decree. An bour afterward she married Warner. She married Asa T. Groen- bide Smuany, just after her divorce from Trench.” 7 The cause of the death of the Archdnch- ess Matilda, of Austria, afianced to the heir of the Italian throne, has transpired. She was smoking @ cigarette in her parlor, and when some one came in she hastily put it behind her, and her dress, which was of light mate- Tial, caught fire, and she was hurned to death. She was only eighteen, and very much be- loved by the people. —— SF The Salt Lake Viaette of the ¢th says: “A large train of tamilies from California end Nevada made their way into aud through town on Saturday last, from the West. and are slowly wending their way to the'scenes of their childhood in America. ‘They are tired of the exciting life of the Pacific coast, and in- tang. locating in some clime of steadier nab.
