a es THE EVENING STAR. Terrsbie Affair—Suicide at San Quent} We are indebted toa friend from Sgn. Jor the following particulars ef 4 occurring at Point San Qnentin, jastas the! e’ctock boat for San Francisco was leaving the wharf yesterday. About baif si moar ‘before the departure of the steamer, peconty Saow- den, ayoung mau about 2p 27 years of age, gon of Richard Snowden, whodied in Virginia City, Nevada, some three or four. years since, and’ well known ia San cisco, rede down to the Point from San Ratael on horseback and put bis horse in the stage Company’s stable, a short distance from the landing. @ then ask- ed the mate of the steamer to take a drink, and ‘went into the saloon and drank and conversed, Witbont exhibiting any indications of a disor- dered mind. He then asked the keeper of the saloon fora pencil and piece of paper, with Which he returned to the stable, where he Wrote a noteto somebody, the bes ar of which our informant did not Jearn. He then asked the groom atthestable toiend him his pistol to shoot ducks om the way down to San Fran- eisco. The groom replied thatit was in his room on the bed, under the pillow. Snowden then went intotbe bedroom after the pistol. Just then the stage came dowr the from San Rafael, and t! ‘oom went out to attend to unhitching the team. He had gone buta few steps when he heard the revort of the pis- tol, and fearing that an accident had occurred, Tan back to see what had happened. Hefound Snowden sitting ina chair, his feet on the table and his head thrown back, covered with dlood, and grasping the pistel in his right band, which lay across his lap. He had plac- ed the muzzle of the pistol in his mouth and diecharged it, the ball ranging upward and backwards and coming out at the top of the head, back ot the line of the ears. The unfor- tunate young man was unmarried: and has deen talking of late of returning to his family i Vitginia. He spent the night at San Rafael where he appeared as usual, giving no one any cause to suspect him of being in unsound mind. A lady relative of the decéased wason the stage which was arriving, as the suicide was committed, and her feelings on learning of the fearful tragedy can only be imagined. No cause is known for the commission of the act, and the whole affair is beyond the comprehen- sion of the friends of the unfortunate deceased. Alta Californian. Terrible Adventure of a Diver. E. B. Harrington, the celeprated Detroit diver, met with a most painful accident a few gays since. He was searching for 4 small brass cannon which was lately lost overbourd from a Canadian gunboat, and had been some Balf-hour under the water, when suddenly a report was heard, and almost immediately afterward a pull was felt on the signal rope. The men ia the boat at once began hauling in for dear life, and word passed among the crowd on stiore that the air-pipe had bursted. The effect ef this announcement was electrical; men rushed hither and thither, pale and fright- ened, and 4 frantic rueh was made toward the spot where he was lastseen. After whatseem- ed an hour of terrible suspense, Harrington’s bead ap) ‘ed, and then his left hand, feebly waving x and forth, but there were no oth- er signs ot life. Owing to the immense weight attached to his dress it was found impossible * to ft him into the yaw! boat, and he was held suspended in the water about 8 minute, when the ferryboat Essex came alongside. Captain Jenkins at once sprang into the small boat, and adding his gigantic strength te that, of the others soon had a rope passed under Harring- ton’s arms, when he was hauled up out ot the ‘water and placed en the lower deck of the Essex. The head-piece was instantly wrench. ed off, but what anawfal spectacie greeted these who looked upon the sufferer. Blood was oozing from every part of his body trom the waist up, and gushed from his eyes, ears and nostrils, while he was puffed and bloated percad recognition. Both eyes were fright- folly swollen, and his neck looked as ifhe had been choked severely, while with every movement blood gushed trom his throat, hig pee, and face meanwhile rapidly turning lack. After his removal tothe shore and medica) aid had been snmmoned, “his body and head continued to swell,” aud, as the body slowly dripped at his feet, many turned away, sickand faint at the ghastly sight. Alter a time he was taken to his room at the Mansion House, plac- ed im bed, and carefally attended until his ‘wife should reach him, which she did at 10.15 in the evening, At last accounts he was much improved. COURTING IN THE STRERBT GaRs.—Oonrting is a very pleasing occupation; at least, it is so said to be by those who have had experience im the matter. Like all other occupations. however, there are proper places for carrying it on—ef these, the street Cars cannot ha eone sidered one; that is, if the demonstrative man. ipulative kind of courting is to be indulged in. The practice of hugging young ladies in the street cars is certainly very indecorons: in opposition to every rule of propriety and good breeding, and yet itis a practice which seems te be increasing very rapidly. And person in the habit of travelling in the horse cars will have noticed and remarked upon and perhaps blushed for some couple folded in each others arms in one corner of the car— “hearts palpi- tating as one”—thus putting into public notice the endearments so frequently described in novels. Such couples are frequently openly jaughed at by the other passengers, and yet they failto see it. erseeing itdo not care. Many of these individuals are respectable in appearance, butas Sarah Gamp says, they “dunno manners.” The scene isstill worse if the masculine lover has been imbibing, which as frequently the case. A half-drunken man fondling a weman in a public vehicle is simply disgusting. Ifthe men donot know any better, the womén should certainly put in a demurrer.”—WN. ¥. Sun. A New Dopes—MEascRINnG A STRANGER. A new and somewhat novel mode ofrelieving a man of bis money, was developed before Judge Dowling, atthe Tombs. Ata late hour on Tussdey night John Murphy. living at tne corner of Hickory street and Morrissey avenue, Brooklyn, being in this city, met Michel Man- ning and an individual known as ‘Jack Cab- bage,”” who invited him into a drinking saloon corner of Pearl and Chatham streets, where Manning, for a purpose which is apparent, pulled out his pocket hankercNief and com- menced measuring hisnew madefriend around the breast. In a few moments afterwards Murpby missed from the breast pocket of his coat a wallet containing $78 in Treasury notes, and charged Manning with taking his money. Ronndsman McDonnell, of the Sixth precinct. enbsequently arrested the <uspected party, but the missing Money was not found upon him. On the complamtof Murphy the magis committed Manning to the Tombs fer trial. ry is thirty-one years of age,a weaver by occa- tion, and lives at No. 13 Mott street. Jack bage has not been arrested. This new mode of ecm | money by the medsuring #5 is net likely to prove very successful. FE ¥. Herala. takai on pores Sak aaa Civil Bicuts im MissouRri.—Susan.
