Intelligencer.esee —-— 208 NEW SUBJECTS FOR LECTURES. There sre a great many eubjects which, al- thongh they are current topics of conversa- tion in the community, are but little under- stood. Take, for instance, life insurance, building associations, co-operative societies, and other subjects which may be embraced unger the general head of political economy. Although the masses enter into these things they doso mostly on the recommendations of others, and without the investigation neces- sary for a thorough understanding of the prin- cipleson which they are based, and the laws which govern them. New, there sre some few men who could take up any such subject, and stripping it of technicalities and abstractions, present itto an audience of average intelli- gence in such a plain and familiar style, as to make it perfectly understood, Much good might be done in this way. Caudle lectures, generally on the subject of domestic economy, are not likely to become popular with married men; but that house- hold affairs may be treated in & manner to interest and improve an audience is proved by the euccess of Professor Blot; and a New York M. D has recently lectured to a crowded house nm Boston, on the subject of life assn- ramce, presenting the subject in an entirely new light to many of his auditors. We believe that there is a rich field open for popaiar lec. turers, wich they can work with profit to themselves and their hearers. NO LAW AGAINST PRIZE FIGHTS. Some surprise bas been expressed that prize fights are carried on with impunity in the bordering State of Virginia without interfer- ence from the authorities of Virginia or the police of this city. We learn that there is no statute law in Virginia to enable the authori- ties to interfere, and the same is true of this District. An effort was made to get a law passed by Congress at the Jast session to en- able the police authorities to suppress any- thing of that sort attempted here, or having 1ts origin here; but it failed tor want of tim In the State of Pennsyivania a law was passed by the Legislature, atter the McGlade and Collyer fight, making it a penal offence in that State, and Congress will doubtless do the same for this District, and the Virginia Legis- dature for that State: but as aboye stated, at present the authorities here and in Virginia are beiplese in the matter. Major Richards and his force were on the alert, and sucenss- fully, to prevent any loss to our citizens from the crowd of professional thieves Passing through. It is believed that not a penny was Stolen by thy + profe-sionals” in our police limits, and they were sent away from the city the moment they showed their faces. A MOVE IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. We have beret fore urged the importance of inducing emigration into Virginia and other Southern States, and we are therefore glad to see that at a meeting of tarmers, iand- -owners, and capitalists, in Alexandria, Va., yesterday, there was a unanimous expression of opinion “that the great need of this State is that the Janda of Virginia ehould be divided into smaller farms than those in which they are Row held, in order to promote the settlement among us of real owners of the soil, who will thus have a direct interest in the future wel- fare and prosperity of the State.” Resolutions Were adopted to urge upon the land-owners of Virginia the advantage to themselves and to the State of subdividing their lands into tracts of such size as will meet the demands of the market; to gather information ot the loca- tion, soil, and character of the lands so offered for sale. and the prices of the same; and also to establish agencies in the leading cities et the United States, and in toreiga countries, where it may be deemed necessary. Also for the organization of the Virginia Land Company, ‘With authority to receive subscriptions of Jand at fairly estimated values, and to hold ; and dispose of the land so subscribed. —— ee RAILROAD CONSOLIDATION. Two separate meetings were held in Alex- andria. Va., yesterday by the representatives -of the Orange and Alexandria and the Manas. sas Gap Railroad Companies respectively, with a view to consummate the consolidation of thecompanies. At the meeting of the board of directors of the Orange and Alexandria road, their president, John S. Barbour pre Sided. At the meeting ot the bondholders Of ‘the Manassas Gap road, $540,000 worth of stock (& majority) was represented, and our fellow-citizen, J. C. McGuire, Esq., who is one of the heaviest holders of preferred bonds: presided. The terms on which consolidation ‘should be consummated were discussed, and dt was decided to submit to the Orange and Alexandria Company two separate proposi- tions, one of which it is likely will be ac- cepted by them. The first was:—To receive and exchange the present bonds tor the face; that is, the amount called for on the face, without any interest. The second:—To re- ceive the bonds at 62% per cent. flat; that is; including all the interest due on them. These (twenty-year) bonds have about thirteen and @ balf years to run, and there is due on them about six and a half years interest, at the rate of seven per cent. Tus Mazineg Coz: ‘This corps, we bear, is not up to its maximum number (3,600) but is nearly so notwithstanding no extra induce- mentsare being made to secure recruits. The Personnel ef the corps within three or four years past has improved considerably: a much better class of men having enlisted in that time than in former years. A few days agoa conu- pleof colored men appeared at the barracks Bere and offered to enlist but were Tejected, at which they seemed much disappointed. On Tuesday, the 2ist May, the Emperor ard Prince Salm Salm had an interview with Escobedo at Queretaro. Maximillian offered to abdicate, and to use his influence to bring about an immediate sur- render of the City of Mexico and Vera Oruz. In return he asked the lives. and safe conduct out of the country, for himeelf and his Ger- man officers and treops, and Generals Mejia and Castella. A special messenger was sent to Juarez, who returned an unqualified rejection. The same day Maximilian, Miramon and Mejia were placed in separate cells, under a double guard, and a court-martial was organized to try them. To-morrow the sentence will be given. If that sentence is passed, it will un- doubtedly be death, and the fate of the Empe- ror will be shared by his chief officers Notice has been served upon the President that Maximilian denies the jurisdiction of the court on the ground of international law. “1 am 8 government.” he says, “recognized by every power in the world except the United States, and 1 can only be tried by a legal Con- gress of nations."
