THE EVENING STAR. The Largest Cirenlation in the District W. D. WALLAOH, Editor ana Propricter. WASHINGTON OITY: THURSDAY.. JUNE 13, 1667. #7 BEADING MATTER ON BEVERY PAGS. BEE OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELE- GRAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER. &7 The following is the official showing ot the daily circulation of the papers named be- low, made under the call directed by the re- cent act of Congress: EVENING STAR. 7.715 copies Be day. Intelligencer.. 3,552 ‘Fhe returns of advertising by the same city papers for the quarter ending December 31, 1566, as taken from the books of the Internal Revenue Office, are as follows: EVENING STAR Intelligencer... ——+20e+____ SHERIDAN AND LOUISIANA. ‘The announcement through tne Associated Pre=s, made this morning in the Baltimore papers thatthe President does not entertain the idea of removing General Sheridaa, (which is doubtless made “by authority’ ) bears ont the STAR’s statement to the same effect made yesterday. The surmise that be may be intending to take that step after July ist is equally unfounded. President Johnson certainly possesses the characteristic ofbeing open, above board and direct in his purposes and acts. however dis- tasteful they may be likely to prove to those who differ with him. He doubtless realizes that Sheridan was placed by the law in Louis- iana to exercise precisely the discretion he is exercising in the cases wherein he has dis- gruntied both rebel reactionary leaders and radicals of the clique of Governor Wells. His purpose is not to permit the affairs of the State to go back into the keeping of those who forced its people into rebellion, who are striving again to become exclusively its governors and directors in all things of local, or general public interest. At the same time it is quite as evidently his purpose to guard all the interests ot Louisiana from being victimized by parties who seek or hold powe; there under guise of intense sympathy with the policy of Congress, really, however, to the end of their own personal and pecuniary ad_ vantage. The country cannot fail to appland the promptness and firmness with which he has dislodged both these interests from the po- Sitions they recently occupied in Louisiana’s matters. The success of either would have equally militated against the simple but most importantend and aim of the reconstruction act. That seeks but to carry out the policy of emancipation necessarily resulting from the rebellion, to its inevitable and natural conclusion. Viz: to the assurance of political and civil equality to all men, who, as citizens of the United States, are hereafter to be relied on to fight its battles, musket in hand, to develop its vast resources with the spade, the plow or mechanics’ tools, with the use of capital, or by labor of the brain; all of whom are hereafter to be taxed individually tor its support. The South cannot recove~ from the effects of the war until ner resources become much more develope than at present. These resources cannot be developed except as those of the North, East, and West have been; by improvement in the condition, and the prosperity of labor, in their midst. The loyal States insist, for the future safety and ad- vantage of the Union, that the South shall, as speedily as possible, become a free country in fact, as in name. That is all tne reconstruction policy of Congress proposes. it is equally threatened by the success of the scheme of some of the late rebel leaders to keep up the ascendancy there of ali the ideas on which the rebellion was undertaken and is yet being justified, as by the success of the schemesof those who would use the new or- der of things only to their own advantage through getting unquestioned control of the State’s affairs. Sheridan blocks the game or both these interests alike. The country, and, ‘we doubt not, the President, thanks him for so doing. THE WAR OF THE PIANOS. We see it denied in benalf of the Chickering pianos that the first prize at the Paris Expo- sition bas been awarded to the Steinway pianos; and in the same interest it is alleged that there will be no first prize, but that there will be “several medals awarded, ef equa; value and distinction;” and that the Chicker- ings, the Broad woods, and the Stein ways will get gold medals. On behalf of the Steinways it | is again alleged that the original award of the gold medal was made to their instruments; that im accordance with the expressed wish of the | Emperor that a gold medal should be awarded to at least one English exhibitor in every class, a2 complimentary medal was awarded | to the Broadwood (English) pianos. without particular examination. Subsequently a gold medal was awarded to the Chickering pianos as the best representation of the straight chord instruments, in distinction from the new over- | strung system of the Steinways; but with the proviso that the medals should be numbered in the order they were awarded, as above- mamed. Atall events the promulgation of the awards officially on the first of July, will settle the question of precedence, and in the meantime it is glory enough for the United States that two of these geld medals were awarded to American establishments, and that the third, to the English manufacturer. was purely complimentary How Ir Wor! T following brief ex- tracts from yesterday’s proceedings of the Constitution-tinkering Convention now in session at Annapolis, Md, speak volume. Mr. Mackubia is the most influential member ot the Convention. Those of Maryland’s sons ‘who recently left the State to do battle for the Tight—as Mir. Mackubin expresses it—are those who went Senth, joined the revel armies, and fought, with sword and musket, to destroy the Government and the Union. “Mr. Mackubin moved to strike out section 2 and substitute the follo “No person, unless a native ‘of the State, ac- tually therein a resident at the time of his ap- pointment, shall be eligible to the office of At- torney General and who has not resided there- in at‘least ten years nex! fe preceding his ap- peintment, and has been itted to practice Jaw therein at least = years prior to his ap- pointmest.” * * Mr. Mackubin, in advocating his substitute, said that it particularly extended the highest honors of the State to those of her sons who Tecently left the State to battle for the right, and who had resided here, now that the tumoil of war is over. He would welcome suck with open arms. This is ‘Conservatism,’ as being manifested at Annapolis. PoxiTIcaL.—Gov. Ward, chairman, and sey. eral of the members of the National Republi. can Committee, met on Monday with a quorum of the Congressional Union Republican Com. mittee in Philadelphia. The session was pro- tracted and earnest, and will result ina call for a meeting of the National Committee at an early date. The discussions were harmenious and triendly throughout, and on the great questions of the conduct of the national cam- paign and the more specific work of thor- ougbly ana systematically canvassing the South, there was perfect unanimity. & Mr. John O.
