MILITARY +0$13.107 9,108 --—____. OPERATIONS AGAINST THE HOSTILE INDIANS. The Military Division of the Mississippi, including the Indian Territory west of the Mississippi river. is under command of Lieu- tenant General Sherman, and the military operations against the hostile Indians are cen- dueted under his directions, he reporting te General Grant, commanding all the military forces of the United States. Three Department Commanders, Generals Hancock, Augur, and Terry, are acting in the field under com- mand of Lieutenant General Sherman, who is also m the field in person. All applications by territorial authorities to raise troops, or for local military force, are referred by the War Department to General Sherman, ip whom authority is vested to determine tne Decessities for troops, their numbers and equip_ ment, with authority to take command and disband them immediately when the necessity for them ceases. This supervision and con- trol is given him as commander of the military division, in order to confine the employment of local troops to cases of actual necessity, and to subject them to some re-ponsible control- The local authorities of every Territory are urgent to raise troops, but their applications are, in every instance, sent to Gen. Sherman for such Action as he deems necessary and proper. Itis believed that the Governmen; could make no better provision forthe troubles existing in the Indian territory. The military service certainly has no officers more able to deal with the emergency in a vigorous and discreet manner, than Generals Grant, Sherman, Hancock. Augur, and Terry. The military difficulties of the situation are greatly enhanced by conflicting views of In- dian agents and traders, and the desire to have military forces and consequent large military expenditures in the remote territories, upon which there can be no more efficient and pra- dent check than the controiling judgment of General Sherman. THE SPECIE DRAIN. Notwithstanding the cry of hard times which comes up from al: parts of our country, ac. companied with predictions of a financial break down, there does not seem to be any dis- position to economise. Young America will not smoke a cigar or drink a glass of wine less, if the crash is coming. Last week nearly two anda quarter millions of dollars in specie were shipped irom New York for Europe. if this sum went fer the purchase of artictes necessary fer consumption, or machinery to add to the productive capital of the country, it would not be so bad, but a great deal of it goes for mere luxuries-—extravagant dresses, Jewelry, wines, cigars and nick-nacks. Take last week’s importations, for instance. We find included 1m the list the following :—Jew- elry, $59,486; fancy goods, $34,306; cigars, $15,666; perfumery, $7,399; toys, $3,943; patent GOVERNMENT SECURITIES.
