THE EVENING STAR, | THE DERBY Day. Epsom Summer Meeting, {From the London Star. The morning opened fine, giving no indica- tion of the storm which succeeded; but before noon tlight sleet fell, and even this was re- marked upon withse much emphasis that it Was apparent thatthe Hermit’s year ready registered alongside that of 1839 when the snow had to be swept from the Derby course. The influx of visitors commeaced almost at daybreak. It may be premised here that the attendance altogether was one of the smallest witnessed forsume years, many being | Geterred by the cold and wet from making the excursion into Surrey. The failure of several @f the tayorttes, and the apparent forlorn prospects of the cracks, destroyed a great deal Of the interest that would otherwise have cen- tered in the race. The fluctuation in the mar- ket, as eur readers ure well aware, were of an extraordinary description, and curiously enough the two sensation representatives were Hermit and Kake—one of whom, a fallen fa- yorate, beat all the ostentatiously paraded eundidates very cleverly indeed at the finish. The Derby Day of 167 will long be remem. bered by all turfmen, not only by reason of the astounding vicissitudes in the betting, but for the triumph of “Poor Hermit,” as he was de- risively called. The Derby was set on the “correct cord” for 3 o'clock, there being no fewer then 30 left in; but No. 9, “Poor Pian- dit,” was scratched at 10.23, and his place was taken conveniently by Distin. The coming of the “crack” im the saddling paddock was eagerly anticipated, but the crowd therein was by Do means so large as on many previous occasions, and as usual all thoughts seemed concentrated upon the great favorites. While the speculators were awaiting the de- cision of the race, clouds cast their gloom over the Downs, and a heavy snow storm éet in with sleety bail, some of the flakes being as Jarge as sixpenny pieces. The air was wretch- ediy cold and cheerless, and the appearance ef the course was & wonderful contrast to fermer years, as crowds of people were hud- led under their umbrellas or crept under the triendly tolisge ot the trees for shelter. Vau- ban, Uncas, and Distin were paraded around, monopolizing almost all theattention of the epectators.- Hermit, who was by himself, was almost entirely disregarded. A few people asked, ‘Whats that !” and, when infor-ned it was Hermit, contemptuously observed, “On!” and paseed on. Though the majority of the public entirely overlooked the ocked out Oaptaim Machell (Mr. Chaplin's con- was quietly giving instructions to Johnny Daley, who is one of the moat respect- able Jockeys of the day, and is well known as Baron Rothschild’s second horseman. [ermit - Was one of the tew onthe card withont any jockey, and, being anybody’s mount, the for- tumate but very deserving rider. John Daley, tumbled into the good thing. In the paddock nothing looked better than The Palmer, Vau- ban, Fitz Ivan, and: Van Amburgh. The Palmer was in iperb condition, theugh somewhat “‘peacocky.” His party were won- . derjull guine, and such was the furore that when Wells took eif his top- coat he was greeted with immense cheering, an incident quite unusual at Epsom. Many Persons were present in the enclosure for the express purpose of inspecting the fallen Rake, . but he was notin the paddock, being saddled and mounted near Sher wood’s Cottage, where be bas been located. Marksman was also ead- died elsewhere. Altogether the incidents prior to the start were of & very tame description compared with former years, though Graad -Cross occupied some attention. As usual, while the animals were under orders great excitement was manifested, and the prelimi- ary canterswere watched with extraordinary euriosity, the style in which the attractive chestnut, Marksman, with his head into his chest, galloped, the bright coats of Vauban and The Palmer, eliciting general admiration, while.Hermit was almost unobserved, so to- tally bad the public mind become alienated trom him by the recent market operations. ‘When the lot got to the post, three-quarters of an hour occurred before they were despatched on their eventful journey. Every race glass was turned upon the favorites, who were easily singled out, Vauban, Palmer, Rake, Hermit, and Julius being particularly con- spicuous. There was at least a half score of false starts, and these were in some degree caused by the fractiousness of D’Estournel. The race in its varying changes 1s described below, and at.is only necessary here to remark that to a certain extent it was uneventfal, as, after a halt a mile of the journey had been tra- versed, there were not more than half a dozen left in it with any chance of success, the others being thus early tailed off. Approaching Tat- tenham Corner The Rake and The Palmer looked formidable, but when they had maae the turn they both died away, ana being closed in upon their chances of success were hope- Jess. From the distance only Vanban, Marks- man, Hermit and Van Amburgh appésred in the struggle, and loud cheers were raised when Marksman was seen to be on the “Thormanby side’ of the course. On breasting the hiil ‘Vauban was beaten, indicative of non-stay- ing capabilities. Hermit won after a game and determined race. Grimshaw evidently acting up to the letter of his instructions, which were not to move upon the horse, and he rode with consummate patience and fine judgment. Hermit, who held his piace be- tween Vauban ard Marksman, was brought out with great judgment and ridden throughout witn wonderful patience by J. Daley. Fordinan’s if-luck in the great three year old races did not desert hum on ihe present occasion, for he only got third, and The Rake, whose recent acci- dentis weil known, finished tenth Julius was never formidable after leaving the furzes. The winner (Hermit) had been one of the fa- vorites until Monday week, when he was re- ported to have been tried with Mr. Chaplin's Tecent purchase, Rama, and not only worsted, but, like The Rake, broke a blood-vessel. He ‘Was then knocked out. To-day his owner, Mr. Chaplin, accepted 1,000 to 15, and his confed- erate, Captain Machel, backed the sod ot New- quinster and Seclusion to win £10,000. Mr. “Obaplin threws in fora large stake, winning on dit £140,000, and Capt. Machel -£63,300. Mr. ‘Chaplin also wins the leviathan bet of £50.000, that the Hermit would beat The Palmer the Airst time they met, and $10,000 that Hermit beat Markeman. Sir Joseph Hawley hedged The Hermit bet a few weeks ago. 1tis worthy of note that Custance resigned his claim upon Hermitto ride The Rake, who has turned out @ great imposter. Thus ended one of the most sensational Derby’s on record. pets oat Sid enka A Romantic AyFain.—The Mobile Tribune gives the particulars of a little affair which recently occurred at Chunchula, on the Mo- bile and Ohio Railroad.
