Intelligencer 3,552 “ The returns of advertising by the same city papers for the quarter ending December 31, 1866, as taken from the books of the Intermal Revenue Office, are as follows: EVENING STAR, Intelligencer... oe ————_ ee» ___ BUTTING THE SLEDGE-HAMMER. For years the Stak has beena standing sub- jeet of unhappiness tothe Intelligencer. Oar neighbor bas very childishly attributed its waning fortunes t> the overshadowing suc- oess of the STaR, and day by day has uttered querulous complaints that the business com- munity have not thrown away their money in the hopeless effort to bolster up that fossil concern, with its omnibus load of subscribera, but have preferred to consult their own inter- ests by dealing with a live business paper like the STAR, that reaches every family in the District. This feeling ot jeatousy and envy is atthe bottom of the continmal exhibitions of bad temper by that paper towardsus. Wecan compare the attacks of the Intelligencer upon the STaR, through a series of years, to nothing but the gallant but wearing fight, recorded in history, of the billy-goat upon the siedge-ham- mer. As the story goes, a plethoricold farmer, exasperated by the treacherous rearattack upon bim by @ vicious billy-goat, hit upon a happy idea to cure the animal of his bad habit, and procuring a heavy siedge-hammer, he sus. pended it by the limb of an appie-tree for the goat to experiment upon. The billy sprang at it with all his might, and the hammer re- bounding, returned the blow with interest- The biliy hit it again, and kept at it as his blood got hotter, and his head and horns grew smaller, bathe kepton hitting it till the old man got tired, and thinking the billy would . bruise some discretion into his brains, went home and lefthim. The next morning, hap- pening to think of the billy, he went out to the orchard, and lo and behold! the billy-goat had worn himeseif all out but his tail, but that tail was springing atthe sledge as spitetully as ever. Year after year the Intelligencer has butted Sway at the STAR, under the stupid belief that if the STAR were out of the way, then its rickety old machine would go on its course rejoicing. The Star has been damaged just as little under the butting process, as was the sledge, but the poor old horns of our venera- ble neighbor have suffered some. It has bute ted itself out frem itscozy old quarters, where it had dozed for hundreds of years. quite across Seventh street, and up tothe fifth story of Polkinkorn’s building, but true to its instiacts it wiggles its stump, s‘ar-ward, through the sky-ligbt of its garret with the same vicious anmosity as when it first entered upon the warfare. If the Intelligencer likes the exercise it has our free permission to go on with it in- definitely, or as long as the stump holds ont. The Stan has thrived amazingly under the Procees, as our advertising columns and sub- scription books fully demonstrate, and we can have no earthly objection to such endurable “punishment.” ee eee tas 3 Sd THE NEW FENIAN SATION. Rumors of preparationstor another grand invasion of Canada by the Fenians are rife, and they would be of a startling character if experience had not proved that the promises of the men who have had the management of similar affairs heretofore, have far outrun their performances. Sounding proclamations have been succeeded by gross blunders, re- sulting not only in areckiess squandering of tbe funds collected from hard-working men and women who have deprived themselves of the necessaries of life in order to contribute to the cause of Irish freedom, but in a wanten sacrifice of life. Not only this. but designing men are to-day living in Inxury on the pro- ceeds of the money drawn from the pockets of Irish men and women whose patriotic de- votion to Erim bas been used to fleece them. Every lover of freedom must sympathise with Ireland in her desperate struggles for independence, and we cannot but honor the Sealing which prompts the poorest ef her sons and daughters to make sacrifices for her sake; butitis time thata note of warning should be raised whemeyer the patriotism of Irish- men is likely to be so misdirected as not to advance the cause they have at heart, | but te promote the schemes of selfish men for their owm aggrandizement. We do not make any particular reference to the raid talked ofat present, further than to | caution {rishmen, to inform themselves weil in regard to it before they venture their per- sons or property again. Itonly seems to us that if it was really formidable, the pian of opera- | tions would not be published tothe world in | i the newspapers,so as to put the Canadiansand zne United States anthoritieson their guard. Published accounts say that a movement to- ward organization and concentration 1s gene- Tal throughont the northern and western por- tion of New York and other States. A mes- senger has been despatched by the head cir- clesto call the brothers to arms, and thirty thousand men are to be concentrated on the border within amonth. The commissariat is a2aid to be well served, and large supplies of army stores are already warehoused in the vi- cinity of St. Albans. Gen. Spear is to com- mand the invading army. The most minute particulars of time, place, and circemstances are given. It is also said that Hon. John Mor- Yissey has been at Troy, in conference with GOVERNMENT SKUUKITI EDS, Wasuineron, May 23, 167. Jay Cooke & Co furmish the following quo- ‘ Aitairs in Georgetown.
