From returns received by the Director of the Bureau of Statistics, for the quarter end- ing March 3ist, 1867, it appears that during that period the total number of emigrants who arrived at New York was 27.619. The entire number was bronght to this country in 133 veesels, being an average ot 15] to each vessel. From Great Britain there were 8,906 males, 4,566 females; Germany, 8,042 males, 3,444 females; Switzerland, 548 males, 189 females; Prussia, 487 males, 161 females; France, 153 maijes, 195 females; Italy, 109 males,16 females: Holland. $3 mates, 78 females: 7,314 were la- borers, 3,568 farmers, 3.357 mechanics. 1,758 merchants and miners, 90 artists, and 36 clergymen. There were also 7 emigrants trom Russia, 1 from China,1 from Torkey, 1 from Africa, 3from Japan, and 1 from Greece. The largest number brought by any one vessel was €37, in the City of Boston, trom Liverpool. THE BALTIMORE AND POTEMAC RAILROAD, By ivadvertence, an item clipped trom a New York paper, appeared Jately in the Star, alleging that the franchise of the above road had been soid out to the Baltimore and Obio Railroad Company, and that Coil. John W. Forney had received a large sum for his interest in the franchise. There is no founda- tion whatever for the statement. and so far as Col. Forney is concerned, we are certain he bas not a particle of interest in the road be- yond the general interest felt by ali public spirited citizens, anxious to improve our Tailroad connections with the North and West. ol Forney has labored zealonsly in behalf of improved railroad connections for Wasbing- ton, and the successful progress of the enter- prise above-named is largely due to hisefforts. DISMISSED. We noti¢ed in yesterday’s STaR the dis- miseal by the Supreme Conrt of the bill in the Georgia injuoctien case for want of jurisdic. tion. In the amended case of Mississippi to be instituted by the counsel, Messrs. Sharkey, ‘Walker and O’Conor, complaining of the ac- tion of Gen. Ord in recently seizing the State treasury of Arkansas, they of course hope to Avoid any such objection as this. inasmuch as the right of property is thus involved in the mew bill. Whether the gentlemen laboring so Zealously to hinder the work of reconstruc. tion tn the South and block the wheels of Gov- ernment; will be any more successful in this new attempt is questionable. Paoblished by the National Publish- ing Company, New York Mr. Flint—who is author of “Druid’s Letters”—undertakes, in this work, to’ make.out a chse for Maximilia essaying, among. other things. to demon- strate that the imi government, in ed; that the people have abandoned Juarez, (whose troops are said to consist now of but.a few bands of guerrilias,) and joined Maximilian; and that the popular prejudices in this country against the establishment of an empire in Mexico ara ‘wrong, because im asserting the Monroe Doc. trine we are running counter to the wishes of the Mexican people, and taking from them their exclusive right to settle their own affairs in their own way and to theirown satisfaetion As the late news from Mexico show Maxi. to be a prisoner in the. hands of the s‘ tother side,”. we mueh fear that Mr. Flint’s lowe. in writing this volume) have been quite thrown away..
