AN IMPORTANT ACQUISITION. itis beiieved ina: the President commani- Cated to the Senate, in its executive session to- @ay. a treaty with Russia by which that Power surrenders to the United States the Govereignty over allof Rassian America and the adjacent islands. It is waderstood thatthe Price te be paid for this territory is about $7,000,000. The treaty will probably be taken Bp next week by the Senate, should that body be convened by proclamation of the Presi- dent, as cems to be expected. The importance of this acquisition of terri- tory will be appreciated by reference to its extent and position. It covers 394,000 square mules, and has about 70,000 inhabitants. It comprehends all the American coast of the Pacific and the adjacent islands north of tha parallel of 51.40, extending some 600 miles, and pearly excluding British America from the @cesn. Iis chief value lies in its fisheries and its fur trade. The principal settlement is New Srcbangel, atown of about 1,000 inbabitants ov the istand of Sitka. Of the population of | Rossian America about 50,000 are Esquimaux, Snd the remainder are Russians, Creoles, Ka- j diocks and Aleeots. SOUTHERN VIEWS. That there is a wonderfal change going on in the South is shown not only by recent pnd- lished letters and speeches of leading poii- ticians ip that section, but by the modified ex- Pressions of opinion on public affairs in the Southern press.
