At night detective McDevitt, by direc- en ot Majer Richards, started, and ar- rived in Martinsburg Friday morning, when he ascertained that the business for wich he was wanted was to discover who it was that had forged tae name of the president, David Usnby, and secretary, Joseph T. Hoke, of the SKoard of Supervisors of ‘keley county, to bonds of the county, issued m payment of vol- anteers during the rebetlion. The bonds were each for $300, with interest, payable an- neally. The supposition is that a large num- ber Baye been counterfeited and disposed of to aneuspecting parties throughout the State, burt as yet three only have come to light, which were paid before the fraud was discevered. McDevitt inquired into the process of signing sud issuing the bonds, and hissuspicions rested wpon Asron Burr Steinmetz, clerk tothe Board ot pees oye whe bas charge of the books and bond# of the Board. McDevitt went first and engaged a room to sell goods as an auc- honeer, and then applied to Steinmetz for a license under the name of James .Macraw Steinmetz was very polite, and cheerfully proffered his aid to the newly-arrived auc- teneer. McDevitt took the license. Stein- metz gave him a letter of introduction to a printer to bate posters struck off, and they were ordered McDevitt proceeded to com- pare the handwriting of the license and the forged bonds, and the exact similarity of cer- tain letters and figures satisfied him that he was rigbt in his suspicion as to Steinmetz. The remainder of Friday afternoon he was employed in ferreting out the intentions of Sreinmetz for bis futare operations, and upon gdiug fo 8 2ouse and pretending te want far- sished rooms for himself and wite, was told by the proprietor that he conid not have them immediately, but in a day er two Mr. Stein- metz, the present occupant, wonld leave and sell his turnitw and then Magraw cotld be Sccommodated. McDevitt also ascertained that the manager of the hotel where Steim- tz boarded, who was oue of his bondsmen. as also his creditor to the amount of § He bad also drawn three months pay in ad- vance, and bad expressed his intention to leave New York. Oharles Eames died at his late residence, on H street, in the fifty-fifth yearot his age. Mr. Eames was one of the most distinguished members ef the bar, aud was well and fayorably known at the bars of the U.S. Supreme Court and of our District courts. He was a native of Massachusetts, ands graduate of Harvard Cellege, and du- ring bis life held several important positions of trust, among others that of U.S. Minister to Venezuela and U.S. commissioner to the Sand- wich Islands.
