Crane (white), stated that he had Tecetved several hints in the last tew Jays that bis course in identifying bimself with thé cruse of progress, was doing him an injury, and an attempt bad been made to intimidate him. In fact, it was an effortto drive b:emout. He had supposed that the people of Washington had jearned that every man bad a@ right te his opin- ions, but itappeared that many had not yet learned it He hoped that the majority of the residents of the District were not so bigoted. in regard to prejudice, it appeared that from the Canadas to the capital it gradually in- creased. In New York, a Democratic city, colored people were allowed to ride in- the cars, while in Philadelphia, a Republican city, they were not. He had traveled some io foreign countries, and never had seen this rejudiee anywhere except in this ceuntry. Even in this meeting it seemed that prejudice existed; the whites being on one side of the Toom and the blacks on the other. He was in Favor of all setting together promiscuously, nd showing that they were ready to live up to their principles. He would advise the col- ored men to do their best to break dewn this prejudice, and hoped they would not patronize ‘the thettres where the colored people were put up in @ loftand were sw. ated to death, and then told that they smelled loud. As for bim- self, he would rather have the seven years’ iteh than this disease—colorphobia—which is ‘worse than bydropbobia. He had recently aeen some cases of this disease, one an old lady ‘who had the “disorder,” and she couldn't help it; and anvther, a you man, who ‘wouldn’t give up bis scent for a “nigger.” In the first case, he would prescribe the milk of buman kindness in small doses, at first grad- ually increased, closing the treatment uy pre- seribing the reading of Christ's sermon on the Mount. A manin bis neighborhood had asked dim sheeringly hew the darkies were getting on, and in the course of conversation he (the speaker) said he soped they would put up Mr. Alired Lee (colored,) for Mayor of Georgetown, if they couid not get a better Man. in Suswer to the question, if it was right to tax Mr. Lee for the support of the schools when he was compelled to send his children to private schools, he being worth $100,000, this person said it was right, that “tbe d—d nigger bad no business te be worth so much.” He would counsel the colored — to treat the insults of their enemies with silent contempt; but when assailed, give them as good as they send. These priaciples ‘were not pew to him, for he had been a Re. publican for twenty years, when it cost something to be a Republican; and had been with others mobbed by some of those who ‘were now radical members of Uongress. Mr. Joseph Williams, of Va., (white,) re- marked that what Mr. Crane had said abont prejudice was so politically, but was not so socially, and to substantiate his statements called the attention of the meeting to the many light colored men present. He had known men to have their own sons working as slaves on their farms. He spoke of the theory that the colored race were the descendants of Cain and Ham 4s explodea, and drew parallel between Moses and President Johnson, closing by re- marking that Andrew had sinned against God, ad would be taken to the moun'‘ains of Tennessee, where he would be buried, bat no man would know bis burial piace. Moses, he believed, had repeated in sack cloth and askes, but he did not believe that there was any salvation for Andrew, who had sinned against the Holy Ghost. Ser ‘ge Hatton, colored, of the ith Ward, said that he was glad to see that the medicme of the 39th Congress was Waving such geod effect, and now as they had the ballot they were ready to meet their enemies. Hi spoke of the change ot color referred to by M: uliams, and said that they now baving the means of protecting themeeives he did not be- Jieve that there would be any more change of color. An Irishman asked him if they, the ne- gToes. did not expect mext to go into the parlors sStatementof the receipts.and expenditares, as follows: Subscribers, - 2,500; gate money, $4,253.25; season tickets, $435. The chair stated that it was now proposed to issue fifteen Wondred shares of'stock at $5 pershare in order that the property might be purchased by the club, as it could be used for boatsng or bathing purposes during the sum- mer. Mr. Faig offered a resolution, whieh was adopted, providing for tne purchase of the property at a cost of $6,000.
