Last night, owing to the recent heavy rains andthe thaw, the ice in the Potomac, above the Long Bridge, commenced to give way, and soou buge cakes of ice were being piled on each otber. banking up agai the bridge, and about Ili o'clock lovd cracking of the timbers towards the Virginia shore, resembling the dis- charge of musketry, aronsed Many of the resi- dents of South Washington. Soon a Portion of the Virginia drawer, with the mess house. in which were some gunning implements and seines, went by the board. Between one and two o'clock @ portion of the northern part of the bridge, inctuding the Washington draw, mea: uring nearly one buadred yards, fell, and ‘Was ewept away by the floating mass of ice. The railroad bridge on the east side of the Long Bridge was damaged near the Virginia draw during the nigh‘, and this morning a por- ton near the Washington draw fell. The pack carried away three schooners from the neighborhood of the Long Bridge, one of which was badly damaged, bat all were sub- sequently secured. A long-boat was also cut throvgh and sunk. The ice is packed in some cases five or six feet high along the west bank of the Washing- ton channel, and the current is running over the flats ata fearful rate, carrying down the timbers of the bridge, &c. Nombers of persons are ventaring upon the jee, retten as it is, endeavoring to secure the drift wood. At the steamboat wharves, the pressure of the ice pack was so sbarp that fears were en- tertamed that the its would be swept out into the jam, and crushed, or seriously dam- aged therein. Steam was accordingly got up upon them, and efforts are being made to work them round to sheltered positions lower down The body of ice and timber biocked up at llth street wharf. The water came into the city canal with arusb, and suddenly raised over the banks filling the cellars on the south side of the Avenue, carrying away lomber from the canal banks, and doing considerable misebiet The water isnearlyas high in 10th street as curing the great freshet last spring. Quite a number of Invited guests, including several Odd Fellows of note from Baltimore, were handsomely entertained by the brotherhood, and spent some time very agreeably in examining the fine collection of books. Among the recent accession is a valuable set of the Edinburgh Cyclopedia, presented by W.R Smith, Esq., Superintendent of the Botanical Garden, an number of volumes presented by Wilham Billantyne.
