THE EVENING STAR. 3 LOOAL NEWS. reread AMUSEMENTS, &c., TO-NIGHT. Chanfrau wil sagan appear in bis great spsc.auty, ~ Sam," this evening. « BUILDING, corner of 7th street and Pa. —The Grand Masonic Fair, for the aven benefit of the Masonic Hall 1, is one of the most agreeable places to spend 81 even- ing in this city. one who attends the de u place tor the benefit of Grace Chureb, will regret the time or moaey spent. 1 ladies are courteuus and agree. abie, and the entertainment is most iaterest- sug. Oop Frttows’ HALL.—Second annual of the United Circles of the Fenian Brothers hood of the District of Columbia this evening. A pleasant time may be expected by all who attend. ———__— Tae Case or Litta HoLtincsworta.—On — ee: Coroner Woodward sam - moned & jury of inquest on the bod of the daughter of tur, W.H. Hollingsworth, whose death st her father’s residence, No. 593 Vir- #inia Avenue, on Sunday night, was noticed by uson Monday. The following comprised the jury -—Moses Meredith, Jonn Bright, Thomas B. Plumsill, Joseph T.¢ tordon, Josiah Ven- able, or = Repetti, Henry Davey, Jas. Cull, Alex. ©. Brom Henry C. Young John A. ‘Witiet, Daniel E. Kealley. it will be recollected that the death of the ebitd (who had been complaining fora day or two of & severe pain in the side) was stated to Rave been caused by an over-dose of opium, administered in & prescription written by Pr_ A. W. Miller, which had been com unded at the drug store of Dr. F.S. Walsh. It was con- ceded at the inquest that the death was caused by (De opiate, and the inquiry was as to who should be held accountable for the child's death. In the medicine given the child was «xtract of opium, which is one of the most powerful opiates—much -tronger than optnim— which, it appeurs, was used instead of the elxir of opium, which is a very mild opiate Dr. Walsh and his son (who compounded the prescription) and Dr. Miller were present, ‘he former bringing with him the prescription sm question, as also other prescriptions from he same physician, which were exhibited to the jury. In the prescription the abbreviation appeared “ext. opium,” but was rather indis- ‘met. and on comparing it with other pre- -criptions of Dr. M.. it was found to resemble those be dou buess intended for elixir of opium. Dr. Walsh claimed that the abbreviation which Dr. Miller said he imtended for “elixir” of opium would be taken readily to siguity “ex- ‘Tact™ of opium—a preparation much stronger (ban the former. Dr. Miller claimed that the vbbrevistion was -elx.” and not “ext.” Dr. J. B. Bates, a druggist, testified, after ex- amining the prescription, that bad it been pre- sented at his counter he would have put up the extract, but would have probably inquired as to whom and for what disease it was to be given. Mr. H. S. Simmons, druggist, testified that he Would understand the abbreviation for “ex- tract,” and would have put it up as such, but bad be seen the directions at the bottom he would not have put it up without making quiry. He would baye put up such for a case of delirium tremens. Mr. Simmons further testified that he bas refused to put up pre- scriptions. and has been censured by the phy- sician for Qot putting up such according to di rections. It was not the habit of druggis whep putung up a prescripuon to ask for whom it was intended. Dr. WH. Coombs testified that he read the abbreviation as intended for extract. He came over with Hr. Miller to see the deceased atter tbe medicine had been administered, and found her im & comatose state, from which she did not recover. He had no doubt but that the medi- cine caused death The following verdiet was drafted, but was not signed by all the jurors: «Tha: the said Lilla came to her death between the hours of iL and 12 o'clock on the night of the 23d inst., from the effects of an overdose of opium ad- ministered im medicine prescribed by Dr. Miller and put up by Dr. Walsh: that the opium was compounded in the prescription by the druggist mistaking an abbreviation intend - ed by Dr. Miller for ‘elixer’’ for + extract:’ and they further tind both the physician and drag- gist were at fault—the former in not writing his prescription more distinctly. and the latter im Bot msking inquiries as to the nature of the case before allowing it to leave the stere.” Ten of the jurors signed the aboveas their verdict, and another juror signed it under pro- test, while one refused to sign it unless it was made to read as censuring the physician only. As this is a case of considerable importance, and the question @s to who should be held ac- countable in such cases, is one which should be roled om by the courts, we anderstand that the Coroner will take it tothe Grand Jury for their action. —_e—_—— Swootine Cakgiessty.—Yesverday morn- ing, & gentieman who resides on 10th, between L and M streets north, discovered that the shutter of a fromt window of his parlor was bored through and the glass smashed. Upon examination a Minmie ball was found on the Moor. It is probable the ball was fired a iong distance from the house, and the force was spent before it struck the shutter. The firing of guns and pistols in the streets is contrary to the city ordinance, even when charged with powder alone; but the penalty for firing a bal: carelessly in the streets should be punished by filme and imprisonment. About eight months ago & ball was fired through the shutter of a gentleman's chamber, in & house on 13th, between G and H streets north, and passed through the headboard of the bed on which the gentleman was lying asleep, and within a very short distance of bis head.
