Nothing of interest transpired at the Execu- tive Mansion to-day. The usual number of visitors were in attendance, several of whom bad interviews with the President. on a THE CASE OF COB LOEWENTHAL. ‘We clip the following from the Washingion correspondence of the Baltimore Sun of to-day : “A few months ago, a person who was form- erly & claim agent was charged with forgeries of bounty claims and final discharge Papers on which he received large sums of money from the pay department. He was engaged in basi- ness in New Orleans at the time the alleged frauds were discovered, but avoided arrest there, and came here and proposed to give himself up to the officers for trial, but bis offer was declined, as there was no proof here against bim. A short time ago it was an. ed that this person had died suddenly in tbis city of cholera, and it now ap; be died at midnight, and the funeral tock piace early the next morning—some relatives being about the only persons in attenaanee. “The Second Auditor, it is alleged, has made discoveries which indicate frauds on soldiers amounting to abont $40,000, and that the Gov- ernment will lose altovether, in connection with the matter, about a quarter of a million of dollars.” The case referred to by the Sun correspondent is apparently that of Jacob Loewenthal. and the intimation is conveyed that the death may have been a simulnied one, to defeat the ends of justice. There can be no doubt, however, of the factof Mr. Lowenthal’s death and burial, He died here, on the 29th of October, of cholera contracted in New York, and was buried on the afternoon of the next day, in the Congres. sional Cemetery. The record of his death, on the books of Dr. Dove, Secretary of the Board of Health, made trom the certificate of death by Drs. F. Howard and T. Miller, returned by Tr. A. Buchly, the undertaker, is as follows: «Jacob Lowenthal, aged 30, white male, Ger- Many, four years resident of Washington, Asiatic cholera: buried at Congressional Oem- etery. The faneral was attended, among others, by his counsel, Messrs. Ford and Hine, who are positive that tt was Lowenthal’s body in the coffin. His death from Asiatic cholera is cer- tified to by Dr. F. Howard, who personaliy knew the deceased, and by other leading phy- sicians, who saw the body after death. at the report im regard to his have originated in the fact that a ys after the interment Mrs. Lowenthal, baving heard from some of tnose who sat up with the corpse that they had noticed a twitch- ing of the muscles and a glow of the flesh, as if from returning warmth. became apprehen- sive that it might have been buried before life ‘was extinct. rs. L. at the time went to some of eur physicians and asked advice, and it was explained to her that the twitching and glow of the flesh was peculiar with cholera cases, and was a symptom which confirmed the be- lief that it was a genuine case of Asiatic chol- ers. ee UNITED STATES STEAMER IN A MUSS WITH A WHALE. Commander E. Simpson, of the steamer Mo- hican, trom Ceura, Brazil, under date of Nov. 7th, reports t. the Navy Department, that on the afternoon of the 30th wit, when off the Lencoes Grands, 100 miles east of Maranham, the back ofa large fivh was seen about a ca- ble’s length trom the ship, and inélined diago- nally towards her. A tew montents after w: the engines suddently stopped; steam was snat off, anda burried examination made, but no canse could be discovered tor the remarkable result. Steam waeagain turned on, but the engines could not be forced ahead. At this time several pools of blood were seen to rise to the surface of the water, umder the stern. After afew moments it was discovered that a large biack-fish or whale had been caught between the propeller and frame. The shock on the engines was very great. FROM THE SOUTH PACIFIC, Rear Admiral S. LOCAL NEWS. pi pticie | Tar New STeamanir Ling.—We are giad to announce that the steamship line between the District cities and New York is an established fact, thanks wo the energy and enterprise of a few of our business men, The fine steamships E. ©. Knight and John Gibson, purchased, aftera thorough examination and ADSpection, on very advantageous terms. T! are concededly the best vessels possible for trade, being regular outside steamers, capable of going to sea in any sort of weather, and of making the trip from New York to hey ton easily in forty-five hours. Captain ©. Potter, US. N., who assisted in making a very thorough inspection of the boats, says in re- porting upon them: “In conclusion, my Opinion is that, for the terms and condiuons on which you informed me they were offered you, your company wou'd most advantageous purchase, wich cov it be duplicated, so far as J know, in the country. T understand from the builder that these vessels cost $76,000 each.” The price paid by the company for the boats was #50,000 each, and the purchase bad been scarcely consummated when they were offered an advance of $10, upon their purchase, by the Portland Steamship Uompasy. The boats are two years old, only. The first boat will leave New York for Washington on Saturday next, and it is proposed to have a steamer leave New York for here promptly every five days, landing at Washington and at George- town. The officers are: J.W. Them) pres. ident, H. C. Fahnestock, vice president; David Waiker, treasurer, and George W. Brown, (of New York,) secretary. The officers will be recognized as among our most responsible and enterprising business men. in whose hands the enterprise will be managed with prudence and viger. The line is emphatically a merchants’ line, and our business men owe it to themselves that it shall be properly sustained. A great adyantage is gained to our merchants.shipping by this line, trom the fact that the management of the line is bela at this end, and shippers having any grievance to complain of are sure of speedy attention and prompt redress. Washington cap at last point to one enterprise set on foot here tor ihe benefit of the city that has not fallen through. We trust it will be sustained in such & manner tnat it shall mot prove the only one. an PRESENTATIONS.—The scholars of the Male Gremmar School of the first district last we-k presented to their teacher, Mr. S.
