Tue Prossian EXPENDITURE OF Ganr- TRIDGES.—There is no modern warfare that can show so economical a use of cartridges as is sbown in the following statement: ~The Prussian War Office has issned a retarn of the number of cartridges expended in the late war, with the view of showing that it was the Pras- siap troops and not the Prussian needle-gun that gained the victory. The number of car- inidges expended during the whole compaign was one million eight hundred and fifty thous- and, which, bemg distributed among two hun- cred and sixty-eight thousand rifle-bearing in- fantry, gives an average of no more than seven cartridges to each man. In the twe hottest engagements ot the war the expenditure was respectively twenty-two and twenty-three cartridges perman. These figures show now short a time must have been occupied in the actual work of firing the needle-gun oy each soldier. ifevery man had set to work inearn- est chal isseven cartridges, the whole supply ef the campaign would have been ex- Bausted in one minute! In the last reportof the commissioners ef this fund, itis estimated at $750,000, of which about $400 000 is in real estate. But, unless the St. Louis papers are in error, the “poor emigrants and travellers” bave not received a pennyworth of benefit as yetfrom this generous benefa tion.
