It is the design of the com- pany to press the construction of the road from Washington to Rockville as rapidly as prac- ticabie,so asto open for local iness, and the convenience of the people of the city of Washington and Montgomery county, Md., a line of travel from that point, as well as to af- ford facilities for the transportation of mar- keting and other supphes. It will be the Poli- cy of the railread company, we learn, to afford every facility to induce the location of a large population upon the ronte between Washing. ton and the Point ef Rocks, so asto develop an extensive local business. The important fact that the company is now ready to commence operations on the read being settled, the next question of mterest to our ciuzens, and one deemed of vital importance, is as to the route by which the Metropolitan Road shallenter our boundaries. We believe that the railroad company would prefer to connect the Metropolitan Branch with the Washington Branch at Bladensbarg, or still farther east. near or at Laurel, and thus use the Washing- ton Branch Hoad as the line ef entrace into the eity. This route wonld be somewhat more circuitous than by one leading into the city direct from Rockville, but it would enable the company to use the Washington Branch fora considerable distance, and also to avoid the heavy expense incident to constracting a rail- Toad within the limits of a city, conforming the grade of the road to the grade of the streeta: &e., &e. In entering by this route the company are also saved the delay of applying te the coun- cils for the right of way. The advantages, however, wo the city of having the road strike Washington by a direct line trom Roc«ville baye been s0 apparent that a very urgent ap- peal has been made to the company through the city press and otherwise to change their purpose. The city desires toopen up a new district of market supply, precisely such as this road, running directly from the Point of Rocks to Washington would open up to us, 1; isalso of great importance that we@hould haye tbe shortest possible connection with the Great West and with the rich yallies of Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania. Appreheagions havealse been expressed that if the road be built so as to connect with the Washington branch at Bladensburg or Laurel, a portion of the traffic of the road might be diverted to Bal- Umore; whereas, if it come directly into the city of Washington, the advantages of the road will inure exclusively to this community. In every way itis felt to bea matter of the first importance to the iiterésts of this community that the road should enter Washington in 9 di- rect line, and not circuitously vis Laore] or Bladensburg. We learn that the company, yielding to the urgent representations made by Mayor Wallach in behalt of the interests of this city, have expressed & willingness to change their plans and enter the city by ‘the direct route if the requisite enabling legislation canbe bad from our Vity Councils in season not to delay the work upon the road. They propose that the road shall enter the city at the inter- section of the nerthern boundary and New York avenue, crossing the avenue and passing through the northwest corner of sqaare 710 to let street east, thence along the center of that street to the present track of the Washington Branch of the Baltimoreand Obio Railroad, and along the route of that track to the present sta. tion on the east side of New Jersey. avenue. As regards the location of the station no place could probably be found that would accommodate the people of all parts of the city, as well as the present station of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. The position is central, streets Tadiate from it in all directions, and it is crossed by the two street railway lines, afford- ing greater facilities for the influx and effiux of paseengers and freight than any other with. in our knowledge. The idea of locating the tation on the suburbs of the city has been Suggested, but meets with no favor so far as we know, except trom hackdrivers and specu- lators in suburban lots. It the present station be used, great economy will result to .>e siti- zens of Wasbington, and to farmers and gar. deners who may use the road, as well as to the general travel, in having s point so convenient and economical for the distribution of their products and for their general purposes. We sincerely trust that the legisiation reqai- site by the City Councils to set this important enterprise inactive motion will be speedily consummated, and that we may soon hear the ring ef the pick and the spade upon the work. During the period when employment is-so scarce, and éo large a number of laborers are unemployed, the heavy expenditures eonnect- ed with the construction of the road cannot fail to be of great advantage to the mercantile and general interests of Washington. The yoad trom Weavertown, (near the Point of Rocke.) on the main stem of the Baltimore aud Obio road, to Hagerstown, is being rapidly constracted, and upon the opening of the Me. tropolitan Branch the citizens of Washington will not only have short, economical and di- rect communication with the entire West and Northwest by the Baltimore and Ohio road and ite Parkersburg branch, but will also have the great advantage of this very de- sirable and ‘sbort route to the fer- tile and ‘wealthy regions of Washington county, Md., and the Camberiand Valley, and other of the richest. of the State of Penney! ia by this Hagerstownbranch.
