Tbe box containing the kitten came safely to Band and reached Mr. J. at his office. who, at the close of his day's labor, started with puss for his home. On reaching I street he meta trend and while conversing with him kitty got out of the box and found its way to a little girl sitting on a door stoop near by. Mr. J. told the girl thar it was his kitten, und finally took it away from her and started towards his bome, the child also claiming it as herown. Thegirl, however, immediately told her tather what bad happened, and he started after Mr. J.. shouting to him “You're & pretty man to steal a child’s kitten.” Mr. J. denied that he stole the kitten, and stated how became by tt. This wouid’nt do, and finally he agreed to go back and satisfy the child that it was not hers. The child imsisted that it be- longed to ber,and Mr. J. was equally sure that it belonged to bis little child, he knew it by the peculiar wave of its tail when fondled. ‘The dispute was now mo nearera settlement than before, and after some angry words the parties prepared to settle the ownership by fis- ticuffs. The mother of the little girl who had, during this time, been conversing witha neigh. bor over the back fence hearing the noise made by the combatants hastening to the scene saw ber little childs cat near the stove and picked itup. On reaching the front door there were the two men with their coats off ready for the fray. Immediately on seeing the kitten in the J. arms there wa< a change of countenance, and an examination was at once had when it was found that both kittens were marked in the same manner and had the same pecaliar shake of tail. The two belligerents thereupon shook bands amid the laughter of the neigh- bors and Mr. J. started for home with his kit- ten —_¢—___. TuE Skating CLUB.—In response to a call puolisbed in the Star, a number of young gen- tlemen assembied in the rooms of the Board of Trade last evening for the purpose of arranging for the organization of a skating club. At 6: o'clock the meeting was called to order, an Mr. H. B. Sweeney was called to the chair. Sweeney, upon taking the chair, re- marked that he was rather too old to become &n actire member of the club, bat in every way be could he would aid the gentlemen im per- tecting such @n organization as they desired. Mr. Morrison stated the object of the meeting to be as published in the Star. It was pro lo organize somewhat on the plan of the base bali club.
