Orme im the chair, and Mr, A. R. Shepherd NCTM As secretary. Mr. J. W. T&ompson, from the committee to solicit supsermptions, reported that they had mot witb some success. Mr. Orme remarked that it did not seem to fim that the stock was taken very readily, judging from the report of the eommittee, je ineacht it a source of grievance that the people bad to be begged to take stock. On asking some of (be Georgetown merchants why they did not subscribe, he was informed that they bad heretotore taken stock in lines and lost money. They said that there was no money in the project. When old business men held back, he was dubious as to the line paying. Mr. Orme referred to a letter pablished by Mr Thomas Clyde, in which he announced his determination to start an ontside line. He de- sired an ontside Ine, but did not desire it to run in opposition to Mr. € . He doubted whether the tine woul ah af) ind was opposed fo siartwmg one while the Georgetown mer- ebants opposed it Mr. J. W. Thompson remarkea that Mr. Orme was timid im the matter, and asked woy be (Mr. © ) bad not subscribed a larger amount Merebants, whether subscribers or not, pro- posed to patronize the line. As for George- own, her people would never subscribe to an enterorise of this kind. He bad no fears for Mr. Clyde's proposed line, for the mercbants, he knew. would patronize a line owned here. ‘The faet tnat Mr. Ulyde bad declared his i tention to start a bre was an argument in f: vor ef pusbing forward this movement. Mr (. sees (bat there is money to be maae, and he Waotsto dyive us off. He asked if the mer. chants of Washiagton were going to be frigh ened by Mr. Clyde's letter. The opposition beehuce it is & Dew project. He felt nis invest- ment Was & perfectly safe one. and he had nc fears that with a population of nearly 20,000 we contd not flud freight enough to make the line & paying one. Mr Orme remarked that he was uot often deceived, and be was sati<fied that his views sm this case were correct. He had known of “team and packet lines which brokeevery man who invested im them. and be believed that 1” would be a long time before any return could be made from au imvesiment in this enterprise Washington was nota shipping port, and in ~aport cities the merchants were not the ship owne ere was too mach risk in them. Mr JR. Elvans said that the objections from such & business man as Mr. Orme were calculated tomake younger men hesitate. It was trove that Washington was not a shipping Port, bur we bere received freight. In his ousi- nese Les freight bills amounted te $3,000 per abnom atthe present rate of 6) cents per hun- ured pounds, and if a new line was started, with treigbts at 40 cent, in his business he “onid eave & thousand dollars per year. Phis ‘would pay bim without any dividend from the stock. He argued thatit would be a safe in- vesiment for the merchants if the stock did mot pay one cent, because of the reduction in treight mills. Home pride should compel us now to establish this line. With a popniation of 20,060 nf we cannot start this line without the ance of Georgetown we are worth jog. if tbere is money in a Jine for Mr. Clyde there is money in aliae which will be petronizea by the merchants. He arcned that the line should be put tbhromgh, and referred te the Guunts of the papers of other cities that we cannot put this Tine throngh. He regarded Dis 45 the turning poimtof the ability of our Uzens to organize enterprises for their own benefit. Mr. Thos. P. Morgan asked leave to correct Mr. Orme, and said that Georgetown never owned « doliar of the stock ip any of the steamship lines plying between the Dis'rict cities and New York. The first line—the Mon- ucello and Mount Vernon—was represented at this end of the fine by Fowle & Co, of Al- exandria, and three parties in New York held the baiance of the stock. So with the other fines. Net a dollar of stock wasever ownedin Georgetown or Washington. He then referred ro om enterprises in other places, to sbOw that Washington was far in the back ground. Clyde bas a hne of mine steamers trom New York to Boston, and a line to Wil- mingten. Richmond, with a population of 40,0, bas four lines, Wilmington, with 15.100, three. Newbern, with 5,u0. two: Charieston, with 40,000, four, as also Savannah: Apalachi- cola, two; Mobile, five, and New Orleans bas a legion of steamers, no less than 16 or !5 being advertised to leave New York for New Ur- leans now; Baltimore runs three lines; Boston six or eightto New York, two to Charleston and so with the other cities. Philadelphia at ene time was in the same condition as Wash- ipgton, but her merchants saw that by starting lines of steamers to athern ports that that trade would be benefited even if the stock paid no dividend, started a company with a capital of $10,000, and they are now reaping the benefit oft. After referring to other similar enter- prises, Mr. M.stated that when mills now in process of erection were completed, (ieorge- town would turn out 1.00 barrels of flour per Gay, while Alexandria would turn ont 5 (bar. Bryan said he subscribed. not ex- pecting to receive dividends, but because he thought it would pay in the reduction of freights, and he referred to the joose mauuer the present line bad of doing business Mr. HougBton remarked that no two bills of the present line were alike, and it seemed that | bad no regular tariff of charges, Mr. Orme asked bow it was that Mr. Mor- gan's steamers were laid up at Philadelphia, and said thar it was unnecessary expenditures which broke companies, causing stockholders to lose their money, intimating aiso that re- cenuy & company ke who bad a fine office @t Sn expensive rent on the avenue. Mr. Morgan said that Mr. Orme should be more guarded in bis language, and be sure of bis fxcts. He did notowa a timber head in the ~teamers Teferred to, and if the company chose t@ rent offices at large prices it was not the bne:nes- of thengents. Mr. Orme remarked that having been mi-tn- formed, he would withdraw all offensive re. matks: be had the greatest confidence in Mr. Morgan Mr. J. W. Thompson offered the following resolution: which war adopted : Keoolved, That we, Subscribers tothe cap- stal stock of the New York, Alexandria,George- town snd Washington hip Company, do bereby agree to trender of the present cbarter, to (he modification in the name of such Proposed company, and in the procurement of & pew charter in conformity th the general laws of the State of New York, with the names of five persons as incorporators, to be desig- nated by tnis meeting, who shall at once pro- cure such char‘er. and we do hereby renew apd contin ur sabecriptions heretofore made to the capital stock of such company.
