St. Mary's Parish ScrooL, Sth, between Gand H street The Ladies’ Fair, for the benefit of the school is still in progress, ~ —>—_ Tee New STeamsnir Lise—Last evening &n adjourned meeting of the District subscrib- ers tothe proposed New York and Washing- fon S:eamship Company was held at the rooms ot the Board of Trade, No.4 Center Market Space. to hear the repert of the committee who were Sppotpted at the previous meeting to coofer with the New Yorkers. Mr. Wm. Orme ‘pied the chair and Mr. Fk. B. Monun acted as secretary Mr. Thompson, from the committee referred o, Peported that they had attended to their du- ues Oo arriving at New York they immeai- stely took counsel with an eminent lawyer as to the hability of the stockholders. This gen- tiemen informed the committee that under the New York law the liability of stockholders ceased with the payment of their subscriptions They bad an interview with the trastees Baimed im the charter, and came toan under- nding—the New Yorkers agreeing to substi- ng directors for trustees: that the District Tibers should elect a majority, one or two “ding in New York, and also have the pre- ent and treasurer. The general act of New rk Tequires an officer in New York, which uirement could be met by giving the secre- taryeb o that city. The amount of siosk ly subserbed in ae York had been vd, some of the partie’ having withdrawn. 4 ommuittee was very cordially received, and had much to encourage them. sre the grocers in favor of the propo nuel Bacon remarked that among the ale grocers especially he fouud much rest felt towards the movement, as they shed to recover the trade with Washing:on had tost. He saw no reason now why mpany sbould not be organized, for New ad agreed to give all that could be reas- yasked for. It was true that some sub- tons bad been withdrawn in New York— e having been made on conditions that * company would purchase steamers owned by ‘bem, but there need be no apprehension t be full amount ofstock will not be taken. from what be bad learned, he had no doubt bu’ some of the vessels offered were very suit- tule for an ont-side line: but he would oppose ! purchases, unless a full examination was mt Mr. Thompson had read @ letter trom Mr. Brown on the part of the New Yorkers, trans ‘ing & copy of the act of incorporation, and ug that the stockholders furnish the names be directors which they wish to appear in barter. Mr. A.K Shepherd remarked that a more t lecharter could be procured under the New York Jaw than under the law here, and ceriainly none so readily: three days would be ample time. Under the New York law, after ' ie paid in, the only liability will be 5 ns’ wages, &c.. for which the vessels * good. There was a strong reason for or- ganizing and putting the line into operation at nee, 88 & leading express line was seeking to ke A contract with some outside Iine for the transportat ot their heavy freight for the th from New York te Alexandria; and there but little doubt but that numbers of mer- nts would also send their goods by the same Mr. Thompson offered the following, which ¢ adopted Re That the enbseribers to the pro- ed steamship line be invited to increase subscriptions to the stock thereof, snd t & committee be appointed to solicit fur- T subscriptions in order to place the line in tion at the earliest practicable day ved, That a meeting of all the sabscri- bers be beld at the Board of Trade rooms on be evening ef the 16th instant for the purpose of selecting the names of five of the subscribers be used in the procurement of the charter to rye as direetors for the first year. The following were appointed the commit- ee —J. W. Thompson, A. R. Shepherd, Sam'l Bacou J.T. Mitchell, James Welch, Wiltiam Wall, James L. Barbour, J. B. Bryan, Moses Kelly, ©. P. Houghton, J. C. McGuire, and Thomas Parker. Mr. Shepherd moved that Mr. Davis be ap- pointed to confer with Messrs. Thos. J. Fisher and H. C. Fabnestock, to ascertain tf they will not servein New York as directors in behalf of the stockholders in the District: which was agteed to. Mr. Orme said he must confess that he was sul At sea, as be was rot yet satisfied that the sbipping merchants would support the line. He bad yet to hear that Georgetown merchants were subscribing. Mr. Bryan correeted Mr. Orme by saying (hat several in Georgetown had subscribed. Mr. Orme further remarked that the New mpson said he saw nothing but pros- , and he called om Mr. T. P. Mor- gan to give his views in reference to the pro- posed line. r. Morgan said he would first ask in refer- ence to subscriptions from Georgetown, when cia ber citizens ever subseribe to an enterprise #s individuals. In 1559 there were nine sailing pacwets, besides the Mount Vernon and Monti_ cello steamers, and yet more back freight was offered than could be taken, and they were obliged to “scale” offers—passing Alexandria frequently and leaving freight ou the wharf for wantofroom. Since the war he had trav- eled somewhat on the roads connecting with Alexandria, and found shat the people along the line would be willing to Ct Bogs goods to Alexandria and thence to New York, paying 40 cents per 100 pounds to the steamer. This treight was tobacco. cotton, and copper ore. Heretofore the lines running were individual lines, or those owned in New York. If the business men of Washington snpport this line success is certain, and if well he saw no reason why the line would not pay 20 ceot. The Sariver line. running from Balti- more, through the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, usually from eight to ten months per year, pays from 25 to 4) per cent. The last outside Iine to the District cities ceased run- ning because of the loss of one ship. the flu tuations im business at the close of the war, and of unnecessary expenditures at the other end of the line. During the eighteen months ‘he Monticello and Mount Vernon were on the line they paid 40 per cent. The grocers and bhucksters here alone would support the line. The meetin jjourned to Friday evening ext, to select directors te be named in the cbarter. —————— Boarp We TRUSTEES oF THE Pretic 1o0L8. —The stated monthly meeting of the rd of Trustees of the Public Schools was held last evening at ‘heir rooms ir. the Ony Mall. the President, Mr. Walsh, in the chair.
