‘THE EVENING STAR. LOCAL NEWS. AMUSEMENTS, &c.. TO-NIGHT. National Tusater—Last Successor im the part. Opy FELLows' HALL.—To-night closes the ‘third week of the festival, concert and tableaux for bevefit of St. Domime’s (new) Ohare, Asland. and no better ewidence of the excellert ebaracter of the entertainment can be afforded than iis continued success for such a long ume. EE THe WasnHincton CaNAl— Revival of Trate along its Banke—Yeeterday afternoon, at the snvitation of Mr. Befjamin Severson, enginser in chatge of the improvement of the Washing- ton canal, 2 number ©f members of the eity press made an excursion from the causeway ‘St the foot of 17% street to its mouth at the Eastern Branch. Before leaving the starting Point, the working of the tide-gates was exam- ined, and also the m lock-gates. The lock- ‘way was opened for first ume on Saturday Jast, and already have long-boats made their ‘way 'm with cargoes of wood, which are being discharged along its banks Yesterday there ‘were seven of these boats in the basin, remind- aeg us of the days of yore, when the great ‘wood mar! of the city was along the canal. At present-Doats drawi 4 feat, or at bizh “water, 93g feet, may enter through the locks in the causeway. Mr. Severson proposes that to make the canal Tost available for commercial purpores, the next step sball be to narrow, it when necessary and deepen it, say abont four feet; the balance of the 75,000 originally appropriated for the m- provementof the canai—abont £35,000—to be used for this purpose. Mr. S. also proposes to improve the channel of the Potomac or to cbange the channel, and aiso to recisim the gnarshy ground from Galt’s wharf to the G street wharf, near Georgetown, by construct- ing & wallon a curved line from the present causeway to the western terminus at (3 street, and dredging the channel to fill in the area so enclosed and reclaimed. Docks may be made between the slips, and the ground made valu- able. The amount of land reclaimed by this means would be nearly six millioc square feet, hich, at 50 cents per foot, would be nearly $5,0,600. and itis estimated tbat this sum would be sufficient to make this improvement und bave & handsome surpims to the city. in course of time it fs proposed to continue this ‘Wall as far as the arsenal, and to erect a break ‘water on what are now the flats, from Analos- tan Island to a point opposite the arsenal. At present the channelis deepest near George- town, gradually lessening down the stream, and Mr. S. thinks that if the proposed channel is made that a current will created which will keep the channel clear. tm passing through the cana) the benefits of the improvement were very peréeptible, the Water as far as the Center Market betng com- paratively fresh and clear. but towards the Capitol it was rather marky, owing to the | = ‘s emptying into it being more numerous and the tide being at about a stand. This, bowever, would be carried off by the tide In this section there are severat by whichshould at once be removed, althou, pede the current, still they are unsightly and deleterious to health. At 3d street a gravel bar wa¢ formed by the recent ireshet. From this point to the mouth—it -betng considera: jess im width than the upper seetion—the ¢ Tent was quite strong and no S$ or other ob- structions were met. In this parta few months since an ordinary row-boat was seidom as high as I street, bat pambers were fount yes- terday fasteved to the banks Thus far the improvement has been a suc. cess. and that i bas done much in keeping away pestilence no one can doubt, and with the other proposed improvement there are bat little fears but it will eventually prove a source of revenue to the city. peer wee yess BY Boarp or TRADE —The New Line of Steamers. Last evening the regular quarterly meeting of tbe Board of Trade was beldat the rooms, No. 4 Market Space, Mr.S. Bacon ta the chair, and N. Sardo Secretary. Mr. Eivans saia in relation to the projected line of steamers between the District and New York, that it was at first theught it was to be = New York affair exclusively. He had been informed. however, that the District was to have a fair show. The éompany had been chartered by the Legrsiatare of New York, and of the capit.I—3150,C00—300,000 was. to be taken here, and the President and Treasurer were to be Jocated here. Thecharter provided tbat s majority of the directors should belong to New York, and in ordep4e give the District the controlling power it had been arranged that the District stockholders should select a residentof New York to represent them. It is propo-ed to place two steamers on the line immediately; and more if the necessities of the trade demand, Twosteamers will cost $i2i,- 000 to $130,000, Some of our business men had taken the matter in hand, and over $40,000 had already been subscribed, New York had taken all the stock to be soid there except about 314,000, and that would be taken in a day or two. A conversation was engaged in by several merecbants, in which it was stated, that with no regular line of steamers Washington will be greatly crippled the Winter, the sreigbt now coming through tne Chesapeake and Delaware canal, which mally closes About December 1, and then we will be at the of the rauroads, if we have no outside line to New York. Mr. Elvans offered a resolation cordially i dorsing and ele ne the new line; whi ‘was unanimously adopted. In some debate in regard to the lines of com- munication to this city, the Point of Rocks road ‘was spoken of as one which would be of ‘the greatest importance to ns; but it was doubted ‘whether it would ever be built as long as the Baltemore and Ohio Railroad had control of it. It was urged that the influence of that road with Congress was on the wane, aad that the Board should lend its influence to the air-line project, to fight Mr. Garrett. Mr. Elvans and others spoke of the impor- tance of dredging and widening the cnannel of the Potomac trom the Arsenal to the Long Bridge, estimating that it would cost about $10,000. Messrs. S. Bacon, J. R. Elvans, and JI.L. ur. were appoin committee to memorialize Councils te mak appropriation tor that purpose. ae netenns A Haypsow One of the very hand- somest busi establishments on Pennsyl- avenue is that of Mr. Charles H. Lane, gentlemen's furnishing store, which has re- cently been thoroughly refitted, beautified, and erned for the fall and winter season. Both © store and the stock of goods are well calca- lated to do credit to the city: and wedoubi not that Mr. Lane will receive, as he deserves, a bandsome returo for bis jiverality and enter- prise. The store as refitted 1s some seventy feet deep, affording room for the display ot perhaps the finest stock of furnishing goods ever prougbt to this city—a stock so large and varied that any customer is sure to find what be wants, and at a price agreeably low. Mr. Lane buys for cash, and as he is not burdened down by the enormous rent by other avenue dealers, he can sell at prices exceedingly low for Washington. We recommend an in- spection both of bis handseme store and of the stock of goods contained in such tasteful qnar- ters. His place is No. 424 Pennsylyania aye- nue, between 44 aud 6th streets. pane ee Tux Couumniay CoLLEGE entered upon its 40ta year of instruction on the 26th of Septem- ber. The number of students has been greatly reduced during the last five years, but the present secsion opened with ihe coflegiate, one hundred paratery, the erection of a new and commodious build- ing for the preparat department, which bas just been completed at a cost of $10,000, and it is tbeit desire to raise a fund sufficient to erect severs! additional residences for the use of the fxculty, which have been much needed for ® long time.
