Sev- eral years ago he was said to be the leader of ® gang of counterfeiters, and who, being caught, was sent to the state prison for five yesrs. Having served his term he came back to Chicago, and making this city hisrendezvous travelled the northwest on the pretence of his being & government detective. Several veats ago he alro enticed from her home the wife of & resident of Michigan city, bringing ber to C cago, and they living together as man and wi fora longtime. After a protracted absence, he reappeared in this city not long since, and has been engaged since bis arrival in endeavor- jug to dishonor Mrs, Newcastle, of 515 South Halsted street. He bas been a constant visitor at the bouse, and in the meantime became ac- @Ganinted with the fact that Mrs. Newcastle has been three times married. Learning thts, he went to the basband and informed bim that his wife's two previ ing in thesame house with himseif in Indi- ana street. He added that one of them had ascertained that bis former wife was in the city, and was about to take steps towards ar- resting Dim (Mr. Newesétle) By means of magnifying the blame attaching to the offense, be so worked upon the mind of Newce: 5 tha: the latter left the city precipitately and fied to Canada unbeknown to his wife, where he now is. Merrick lonned the deceived hus- band money wherewith to travel, taking in Teturn a lien on the busband’s furniture. Hav- ing accomplished so much, he, on visiting the wife, renewed his base pi Is, and when she repulsed bim threatened to take the farnt- ture from tne house. In her distress Mrs. Newcastle applied to a neighbor, who imme- diately informed Superintendent Nelson. latter detailed officers Moore and Ellis to visit the house at the usual time of Merrick’s ap- arance.snd arresthim. They reached the | emp Wednesday evening, shortly after the man’s arrival, and witnessed through the win- dow his inhuman conduct toward the lady. He at first renewed his proposals, and upon their failure once more, had recourse to threats. Having seen enough to satisfy them, the offi- cers rushed into the room, and, arresting Mer- Fick, took him to the armory. Merrick was heid on bail of $500 for fur:her examination on Tuesday next.
