Wret is krowu ss the Eessemer process * cons ‘of py-‘roimost -', bag worked « compie:e reyoluvon iu manafac- tures by redzeng the cos. of wakins steel a. *ast S100 perton, thus k ding to its substiic- tion for iron im engine work, bridges, plaves of sbips, and .or railway purpeses. Uae firma wm Liverpool has already constructed 3,000 tons of shipping wholly or partir ‘iy of Besse- mer steel: and it is being extensively used in Europe and in th‘s country for railroads, oa account of its durab''ity, it having been proved by experiment that one steel! rail will stand the wear and tear of seventeen of the best iroa ones. To supply the increased demand we works m Great Britain now prodace mo~ than 6,600 tops weekly, or fivleen times the co tire production of cast steel im that count y | be-ore the introductioa of the Levsemer plan. For the information of our readers we pro- Pose to say a word or two as to the proce~ Which bas produc: d such grand resulis. Us der tbe common name of iron there are virt. ally three metals, which differ from each eth + even more than many chemically distinc: meta!s, the difference resulting from the ipfiv. ence of carbon in causing a variationién tee physical properties of the metal. Thus, whrea carbon 1 ab ent, (or present only in sma™* euant'ty) we have wro./ht iron, soft, ductil:, end not susce »tible of tempering. When cer. bon is present in certain proportions we haye various kinds of sf-el. Increrse these propoc- tions of carbon to a certain extent, and the re. sult is cast-iron, hard, brittie, and not forgable or weldable. This being so. it will readily bh? percerved that s.eel may be made either from ‘Wrought iron, by the addition of carbon; trom cast-iron by its decarburization; or by the ad. dition of malicable to ¢ist-iron in the proper Proportion. Of the methods ot adding carbon zo malleable iron to preduce steel, there are many. One of the oldest, and that most com- monly employed, is the exposure of straight, hat bars of iron (im contact with ground char- coal, under 4 covering impervioas to air,) to the action of a glowing red heat for from 7 to 70 days, the resulting mei.t being known as blister strel.” To ,et rid of che surplus ca. ben in cast-iron, and reduce it to the propor- iyon m which it exsstein steel, various methods have been in use which it is unn-cessary to rever to here. We, therefore, pass directly to the Ess 2mer process, which is merely the decarbrvizing ot pig iron, while in the molten siite, by blowing atmorpheric air through it, thus producing Steel, a process accidentally discovered. ard which, like other great discoveries, is so simple ibat she wonder is it was not thou¢ht of before. Bessemer, about the time eas. iron cannen were talling into G@isfavor, made a series of experi- ments, one of which was thatof purifying the jrom to an unususl extent by blowing air through melted pig iron. His first experimen: ‘was rather alarming, and nearly led to a disas- trove fire. Tbe only other result wa’ “burnt jron.” His second trial w-s a little more suc. c<ssful, and the product was malleab!> iron. it now struck him that by stopping the decar- bvrization before it was complete steel weuld be produced He tried again and the result ‘was unmistakablestee]. Not meeting with mach « Bcouragerr ent trom the iron and steel makers, Mr. Be: emer started works ef his own, and the certainty, ce’erity and cheapness of his pro- cess soon Jed to ity universal adeption, with the resuli- stated already. A gentleman wPo has recently been traveling through the State of North Carolina, and who has had good opportunities for intelligent ob- servation, informs us that things in that State look very tavorable for hopefal progress. The i “ople of the State sre adapting themselves to the sliercd condition of affairs with pronipt- nets, and are evincing ® sagacioas disposition to enconrage business enterprise in the State throngh the introduction of capital and busi- ness experience from abroad. Men of enter- prise and capital from the North, disposed to settle in that Siate, have not been repelled and driven out, as they have been from some other portions of the South; and the consequence isthat many have staked their for.ane; and interests there, and are co-operating heartily ‘with public spirited citizens of North Carolina in establishing busine:s enterprises in the way of mannfaciures, canals, rai dramage, planting, &e., &c.,. calculaied to} plage: North Carolina in the front Southern States. Some exper:ments tl er in the way of dramage andin the use of the immense store of marl in that Sta -have demonstrated that the plan.ing interesis of North Carolina are capable of the most extra- ordinary development and expansion. Asan evidence, in the language of Sim Patch, that “some things can be done as well as others,” our mformant states that two Northera men who pe'd $10,000 in gold fora piantauon in Pitt county, have realized already $30,00 on their investment. Two years ago neither of them knew cotton from rice. They have hired freedmen, opening a school for their benefit evenings, and in other ways encouraging them to steady, industrious habits; and the resuit bas been most satisfactory, as above indicated. The grntleman from whom we gather this in- formation states that it will be requisite gor the people of North Carolina to at once re-es- tablish their school system, broken down by the war, Unless they are willing that the free@sen should outstrip the “poor whites’ in education, 48 at present with the Freed. men's Bureau schools, &c., the blacks are get. tingj about all the tree schooling afforded in the State. Thus at Raleigh there are fifteen schools for negroes in operation ana none for whites. THE WHITE HOUSB.
