"THE EVENING STAR. | A Curiovs Cas#—In one of our courts, last ‘week, man whois known as one of the most bordered villians of this locality, received the rewaro cre to bis offence @rainst the Inws. and ick a while society will be deprived of his His name, however. is prominently d wit Action now pending before anotl«T court, the circumstances of which are fo sipeulsr, and at the same time so uaforta- nate for the lady with whom his fate has been | inked, a8 to be worthy of record. For her | sake we torbear to designate the parties with | nore parucelarity. T weoty years ago the man, thena young man ef food reputation and promise, married the Gavebterof a 41to do farmer in one of the | pegiboring towns. The wife was® woman Tethan ordipary attractions, well edu- and refined. Not long after the birth of child, now a young womaa of nminete-n age, the father began to go to the bad, | y jem his home, and a few yeirs | since married again in Penusylvania, having, | mm the meantime, engaged im the enterprises which have re brought Bim to the cells. Not long since the father of the second wite Was putin possession of facts which led him te suppore that bis putative son-in-law has cuilty of bigamy, and coming to this city out his first wife, and learned the trath use. The wife immediately began an t for divorce. The cool scoundrel, however, was ready for any turn of afta, ad immediately, met the situation boldly denying that he was ever before married. The borror and indignation oftbe mother and her daughter can be imag- inec, and they immediately set to work to obtain the necessary proofs of the marriage. ‘The certificate was nowhere to be found, and it is suspected that the husband, having ob- tained possession of it. had destroyed it. On further inquiry, it was foand that the Justice | who bad performed the marriage was dead, Wwitboat having left a record of any of the mai ringes which he had solemuized. The grief- stricken woman, moreover, found that the Witresses to the marriage were scattered to the ends of the earth, and lost to herin unknown Jocalities. Up to the present time no traces of them bave been found, and it is not even known whether any are still alive Hopes are, however, entertained that amore the «fects of the Justice spoken of some record Tay yet be discovered. The moral of the rd must be plain to every married woman.—Bu/- fale Exchange. A BURGLARY PREVENTED.—A lady named rs. Walratb, whose husband was absent from Bome, soon after retiring last Friday night, at Auburn, N. Y., was disturbed by a noise in her garden- She went tothe window, revolver in band, and saw 4 man carrying a basket con- taining several articles of value out of her Woodshed. She aimed her revolver and com- manded him to dropthe basket. He let it fall jost outside the gate, and ran. Two men hap- pened along just then, and the lady requested them to set the basket inside the gate. “Cer- tamly. as the reply, and one of them picked up the basket and started off with it. Mrs. Wotrat again raised ber pistol and threatened to shoot him if he did not put it down. He dropped It and they both ran. The iesy then dretsed herself, went down and brought the basket im. The only thing to be regretted about the matter is thatshe allowed the vil- ains to escape. A Cast To BE L¥VESTIGATED.—A corres- pondent of the Misseuri Democrat says a man named Michsze] Burke, a cooper, living in East St. Louis, Mo., was killed by Marshal Capty, of that place, last week. A jury, hastily summoned, declared that nis death was cansed by “intemperance and ex- posure.” His body was boried, but was after- wards disintered, and another jary fonnd that be came to his death from injuries received atthe bands of Marshal Canty.” The case will be further in vestigated.
