EEE —————E__™™ > THE EVENING STAR. LOCAL NEWS. BOARD oF TRaDE—Special Meeti Line of Steamers Endorsed —The Bo: assembled in their rooms. No 4, iast night. and were called to order by Mr. J_ T. Mitchell, Vice President, at whose request Mr. ©. P. Houghton stated the object of the meeting was to endorse anew line of steamers now ready to be put on the route between the ports of the District and New York. The mer. chants of the District are well aware of the ne- cessity of promptness and dispatch, and the company is prepared to guarantee poth; bat ‘Wanting to make the linea permanent institu- Hon, ioentified with the Interests of the Dis- trict, they desire the endorsement of it by the Board of Trade. Mr. Clagett was not acquainted with the de- tails of this enterprise, hardly aware of it un- tl be entered the room. He understood that some of our old citizens, among them Mr. Say- age, WhO Was present, are connected with this enterprise, and furnish a large proportion of the capital. Mr. C. wasin favor of endorsing all those large enterprises for the benefit of the District, and hoped that the Board would unanimously endorse this enterprise, and of- fered the following preamble and resolutions Whereas the time has arrived when it is necessary to rely upon individual and conjoint exertions in mercantile pursuits for success and prosperity; and as the existence of water communication, by steam or otherwise, with commercial ports tend largely to the conveni- ence, Weaith and happmess of those engaced in business Pursuits, as well as communities at large, thererore, be it Hesolved by the Board of Trade of the D.C. ‘That we regard with pleasare the estaplish- iment of a new outside line of steamers to ply between the poris of Washington, Georgetown, Alexandria, and New York, beheving that the establishment of said line will prove highly beneficial to our mercantile Prosperity, and re- Munerative to the projectors. Resolved, That the merchants and trades people of the District of Columbia, in the opinion of the Board of Trade, should extend 1 sid im their power to insure the © New York, Washington, George Alexandria Steamship Company. i—A New of Trade ket . and we commend this enterprise to the support of the mereantie community and travelling public. Mr.S Bacon saia he did not intend to offer Opposition to the resolation, but he would ¥ that the companies themselves always control their own destiny, regulating the P tromage by the rates of freight. If the com- any will establish the line with reasonable of freight the merchants wil! sustain it, butthey will not s=staim it with exorbiian: rate The canse of the tailure of a former company was their exorbitant charges Mr. Houghton remarked that the company Proposes to compete with all others. Mr. Bacon.—There is still anether disadvan- tege, the cartage from Georgetown to Wa: ington city: mercbants have to pay 25 cents per barre! for everything they get. With such exorbitant rates, so far above the costs of other routes, it is difficult to induce merchants to sustain a jine. Mr. Houghton thonght the cartage a muni- cipal matter, subject to the legislation of the city counctis, Whe ought to protect the mer- cbants by laws regulating the cartage. Mr. Bacon replied that the municipal author- ites can by law regulate the cartage within the city; but they have no control over the cartage | from one municipal to another. The question was asked by several gentie- men if the steamers cannot stop atthe Washb- | ington wharves. It was snswered by a gentle- man connected with the enterprise, who re- marked that they would do so gladly if the coudition of the channel was such as to per- | tar Mr. Andrews, of the new line now running to Georgetown, remarked that the company is able and willing to putas many boats as are | Wanted upon the route if the merchants will | sustain it Capt. They are neither old dilapidated steamers. nor canal boats, fit to Tun for a season only, but sea-going steamers, every way fitted for the service permanently. and th sm pany intends to make the line per- manent. and identified with the mereanule in- terests of the District. Mr. Orme asked who the company are, and whether they are responsible gentlemen. The uestion ought to be answered, the merchants their endorsements. Messrs. Norment and others tollowed in fa- vor of encouraging all enterprises that have the interests of the District as their object. The resolution was adopted unanimously Mr. S. Bacon called the attention of the board to thee xisting law relative to non-resident merchants, and offered the following: Resolved. That a committee of three be ap- Pointed to bring to the notice of the Councils the existing law regulating non-resident mer- chants, with arequest that they advance the rate of heense somewhat in proportion to the amount paid by the residents. Adep'ed unanimeusly: and Messrs. Bacon, Clagett and Norment were appointed Mr. R.M. Hall offered the following resolu tion Whereas it is expected that bis Excellency the President of the United States will retarn | to the seat of Government on Saturday next Therefore be it Resolved. That the members of the Board o Trade d+ unite cordially with the ciuzens gen - erally and the different organizations in the | public reception of our Chief Magistrate, and bat a eommittee of five be appointed to con. | sult with other bodies upon the reception, and | to represent this board on the occasion.
