THE EVENING STAR. THE PHILADELPHIA CONVENTION, Meeting of Northern Delegations. Pwitapacruta, September 5.—The Northern a aves betd an iujormal meeting at the League House to-day, when a committee of five was appointed to meet a committee from the Seuthera Convention. Subsequently ‘wos reported that both bodies should fuse in & gtacd mass merting this evening. Speeches were de by Senator Wilson, of Massachu- setts ‘peral Schenck, of Ohio, and General Butler, and others, ali thoroughly denuncia- tory of the President. Meeting of Committees. The Committee 0 : Addreas have agreed upon report. It is understood to be im favor of the policy of Gongress—same as telegraphed last night. QGommittee on Resolutions are in ses- sion to-might. They have not yet agreed, and it is Supposed at this hour that two reports will be presented, the minority in favor of recom- mending negro suffrage. The Meeting 10 fre: PRILADELP HLA, Sept. jot meeung ot the Northern and Southern delegates in front of the Lesgue House was the most im- posing demonstration ever witnessed here. ‘Twenty thousand persons assembied before the arrival of the processions from the diffsrent sections of the city, including the « ablican Invincibies,” the “Boys im Bine,” and citizens, ‘with torches. Four stands were erected. Mayor McMichael presided at the main stand, and created a langh by exclaiming “J am here.” He introduced General Butler, who made a te ling speech. During Senator Harlan’s speech, at the mass meeting to-night, there c: countermarching mm magnificent style, with long ranks of parti- colored lamps and transparencies, tne «Boys in Blue.” The effect ofthe whole scene was superb. It was remarked that its like had bever before been witnessed in Philadelphia; and still came on other clubs, each in its turn being welcomed with great demonstrations. (One of the transparencies showed the motto put in the mouth of the President, “My race is almost run;" another bore the motto, “The Union forever—Our brave tars and gallant soldiers have won a nation’s gratitude.” With such @ demonetration oratory fell below par, and it appeared much as if the accompanying chorus of thousands singing the “Battle-cry of Freedom,” discharges of cannon and flight of fireworks, were only fitting expressions of public sentiment. Mr. Harlan was voiceless and could only look on with the rest with ad- Miration, unless when he joined in the chorus of the multitude, which was estimated by en- thusiastic individuals on the stand at various figures between fifty and a hundred thonsand. It did not fall much, if any, below the smaller figure. “How is my policy!” was triumph- antly asked and answered with bantering echoes. Another band passed playing “Rally round the Fl: nd again song is struck up with a chorus shouted from the thousands of throats; cheers are given for General Geary, and Governor Curtin, and John Minor Botts, who stands conspicuously on a chair on the portico, and who laughingly expresses a doubt whether the procession has not been marching in a circle all the time. He said he had seen & great deal in his life, but had never seen the like of this. A party at the foot of the rtico struck up verses of «We'll hang Jeff. AVIS On & sour apple tree,” and the chorus ‘was joined in by hundreds. [SECOND DESPATCH } PRILADELPHIA, September 5.—The Uom- mittee on Resolutions are still in session at a late hour to-night, and are said to have nearly com pleted their labors. Their resolutions will conform with the ad- dre-s, and neither will allude in any manner to the subject of ‘o suffrage, but fully en- Gorse the Congre: al amendment, which jeaves the whole subject of negre suffrage to the respective States. The member of the Com- mittee on Resolutions from Alabama, Albert Griffin, quit the committee in disgust when it Almost unanimously rejected the assertion that universal suffrage was theonly remedy for the woes of Southern loyalists. Tne address is able and patriotic, and is an eloquent appeal to Congress for protection. and a detail of the terrible evils that have befallen the loyal men of the South since the full development of the Policy ot President Jobnson. aiciaeniitiedencnainincitions Bioopy TRacepy In Buc nen AM—A Father end Son Killed—We tearn that an affray oc- curred at Buckingham Court House, on ar- usy evening last, between a lawyer named James Leach. and Anthony Walton and his son, whose given name we did not hear, which resulted in the death of the death of the elder Walton, and the mortal wounding of his son. toe affair grew out of a supposed criminal in- timacy between the wife of the elder Walton and Leach, the facts of which. however, {t is proper to say, bad been fully investigated by mutual frieads of both parties, and by them Pronounced entirely unfounded, and it was supposed by all that the whole matter had been settled to the satisfaction of the Wal- tons. This, it appears, was not the case, as young Walton, meeting with Leach on the street ou Saturday, asked of him fur- ther explanations, and while they were talking the matter over some oflicious friend went to the house of the elder Walton, and told him bis son and Leach were engagedin Adifficulty, #nd the father proceeded at once to where they were. Upon getting near enongh, he immedi- ately drew bis pistol aud fired, without effect, at Leach, who returned the fire, ris ball strik- sng him in the neck, the wound terminatinn fa- tally ma few minutes. The younger Walton and Leach then commenced firing at each oth- *r.one of Leach’s balls penetrating the abdo- men of Walton, inflicting a mortal wound. Teach himself was unhurt. After the shooting he surrendered himself tothe officer of the law, ond was tried and acquitted upon the ground ot baving acted in self-defense. The parties to this unfortunate affray were all highly re- spectable, and its tragical resuits are most ceeply deplored by the entire community.— Lynchburg News. : % SmxcviaR L&GaL Optyion.—A Memphis sawyer relates. if we may rely upon the state- mentof the Memphis Bulletin, that while in Carroll county last week he had attended the preliminary trial of aman before a county magistrate, charged with stealing corn from a neighbor's crib. The evidence went to show that the defendant had been found with his }. and in an aperture in the crib, safely fastened in asteel trap. which the owners of the crib bad set for the purpose of cat bing a thief who bad been preying upon bis grain.
