THE EVENING STAR. LOCAL NEWS. Dearas oF Prominent Citizexs.—Wm. J , Eeq., died yesterday afternoon at three ‘o'clock, st Mount Pleasant, north of the city, after an illness of eleven weeks, aged about 43 fars. Mr. Stone wassson of the late Wm. - Stone, er., and was a lawyer of much abil- ‘ity Jespecially in civil practice. He studied law under the late Gen. Jones, and was ad- Mitted to the bar on the Wwth of October, 1435. He was one of the hardest working lawyers in the District, and bis legal attainments, together ‘with bis industrious habits, very early gave him a high and enviable repatation, waich he maintained to the day of Bis death. Mr. Stone moved his family to Mount Pleasant early in July, and was shortly after attacked with a disease of the brain, which doubtless ori, nated ina measure trom hard mental labo! He was attended during his illness by his brother, Dr. R. King Stone, and Drs. Miller, Garnett and Blanchard, who exhausted the resources of medical science in his behalf un- Syailingly. He leaves x widow (a daughter of Thomas Green, Esq.,) and seven children to mourn his loss. A meeting of the members of the bar will be held in the Council Chamber to-morrow at 11 o'clock. Mr. James W. Spaulding, commissioner of improvements of the Second Ward, died yes- terday about noon at his mother’s residence, corner of lith and L streets, in the thirty-fourth year of his age, after an illness of upwards of two months, of consumption. The deceased was formerly assessor of the Second Ward, and for over two years past he was the com- missioner of improvements for that ward. He Was &n energetic, industrious young man, having the interests of the city at heart, and pressing forward all work entrusted to him to completion; and proverbial for honesty and integrity, he made many friends, who will mourn bis death. His funeral will take place on Sundsy aiternoo: pie one SE THe WoRKINGMEN’S CONVENTION.—A meet- ing of the Workingmen’s Convention was held in the Council chamber, City Hall. last eve- ning, for the purpose of receiving the report of the delegates to the National Labor Conven- tion held in Baltimore on the 20tn instant, the president, Mr. Wm. Griffin and Joseph Webb, of the Machinists’ and Black- smiths’ lnion, was B ie oe aes and they were Admitted to seats as delegates. Mr. J_C_C. Whaley presented the report ot Mr. Emmons and himself as delegates to the Congress, which comprises the entire proceed- ings and the Ny a of the interview of the committee with sident Johnson Mr. Berger moved that the report be referred to the executive committee, with instructions to report atsome future meeting such meas- ures as they may see proper for action: car- ried Messrs. Berger, Bradbury and Porter appointed a committee on finance. Mr. Beron moved a vote of thanks to the del- egates (Messrs. Whaley and Emmons) to the Labor Congress for the faithful manner in which they discharged their duties. Mr. Mitchel! offered a resolution, which was Adopted, instructing the executive committee to report such amendments to the constitution | 3s may be deemed necessary to secure a large representation in this Convention on a nuamer- ical and contributing basis, and to report such other measures as may be necessary to secure j a thorough organization of the working men of the District of Columbia. were | ——--- a Mes. SWISSHELM AND Miss Minwik REAM August 29, 1565. Editor Star: And Mrs. Swisshelm is living yet’ Yes; and sarcastic as ever. We had thought she had learned to hush, or at least “put & bridle mpon her tongue,” after her ruthless attack upon President Johnson. But we were mistaken; for now she bas another Subject m the person of Miss Minnie Ream, Whose crime seems to be that of beimg an artist of such rare talent as to attrac. the attention of that great American sculptor, Clark Mills, who, having taken her as stu- Gent, 15 Dow advancing her so rapidiy as that she was the recipient of the order for a Lincoln statue. While we have not very much personal acquaintance with Miss Ream, we would take this opportunity to , that if she is pretty, and knows it, (and who can help but know it, when are they pretty,) we Tully be- lieve her to be a modest and discreet young lady. But was it ber personal appearance, her curls. or ber jewelry, or ealling upon the members at their lodgings, or the reception reom at the Capitol. that influenced them in their opin- ions? Bab! for shame! I would not insal Congress by letting such a thought escape from my pen. Since the subject is before the public let us examine the case for one moment. Clark Mills was so fortunate as to be the Iast artist who took a bust of Father Abraham while he was living. and be was so successful in this attempt as that bis bust is protected by letters patent in the U.S. Patent Office. Every person whom i have heard express an opinion pronounces this to be the most true and faithfal likeness of President Lincoin there is on exhibition. With such a teacher as Clarke Mulls, and such a perfect model before ner, is it a matter of sur- prise that she should succeed, and “Carry the day over Powers. and Crawford, and Hosmer, and who not?” We believe that Congress de- cided according to the model presented, which ‘was right they sheuld do: and we think all sensible people, if they will take the trouble to examine the ease, will agree with us in Opinion . Also in pronouncing the article that appeared | tar & base slander, unworthy to be read: disgrace to her who wrote it. That woman should thus write about Woman is shameful. Is it not enough that when woman attempts to make her Way in business that men hisa @ud jeer and insult them with sneers and ingywayations? It is time women learned to love egeh other: to assist | each ether, and to rejoice in the saccess of every one that does succeed. Away. then, with these petty envyings and hatred; put away this gossip. By « Lavy THat Loves Justice anp Tactu. RECOVERY OF STOLEN PROPERTY —Last Wednesday a discharged soldier named Wm. But he chose to send it to the detectives rather than run the risk of capture with the check in his posses. sion. The check was returned tothe owner, ‘who considers himself fortunate. —_o—___ JUST THE THING !—The announcementof the souble-trip excursion (in behalf of the Masonic Hall fund) to Fort Washington and Glymont will strike pumbers of city-tired souls of the can't get away club” as just the thing they have been looking tor.
