THE EVENING STAR. LOCAL NEWS. —_——_~s A Cortous Casz oy Bany Mystirication: A very curious case has just been developed am this city, which has occasioned considerable talk and speculation among those who haye been informed of it. It appears that a young Jady residing in the Northern Liberties whose initials are L. R., being about to becomea Mother without the license of a wedding rin, ‘Wished to hide her disgrace, and made prepa- TFations for her coi ment. It was previous- dy arranged that ‘nm the child was born that -——, Who was to be called in, was to take it toanuree, which he did, per agreement when the event occurred. Here another part of the story commences. ‘The Doctor, either about this time or before, bad been consulted by a girl named J. P. » who formerly resided on 13th street, and was then Stopping in the neighnprhood of the railroad depot. She had been making efforts to induce her protector” to marry her, and to further her purposes, pretended to be enciente. The Doctor having got possession of Miss R.’s child, informed the P. girl that all could be arranged, and accordingly she feigned confinement, when the Doctor was sent for, and he came with the child of R. Jeaving it in charge of a nurse in the room. A few dsys subsequent te this pretended con- finement, the “protector” having been sent for, called to see the putative mother, and see- ing the child there, and behe ving himself to be the father thereof, he gave his promise that in &@ short time be would legitimatize it by mar- Tying tne mother, but he could not do so at present on account of the opposition he would have ip his family. By this time the true mother became s: icious that the doctor nad pt been dealing tairly with her child, and yearning for her offspring, she sent for the doctor asd requested him to restore the child ‘The doctor of course promised and left. Think- ing it his duty to satisfy the mother, he pro- cured a babe, which he took to her; but her motherly instincts were not to be deceived, and she refused the bogus baby, and subse- quently took it to the doctor's office, where it was lett For some days negotiations have been going on between the parties interested, and it was confidently believed that before the affair could be settled satistactorily the assistance of a Police justice would be necessary. The thing bas been straightened out at last; the bogus mother having given up the chi'd to the real mother and left the city with the bogus child, ‘which she bopes to pass off upon her unsus- peeting protector accerding to ber original ersmme as his own, and thereby effect a marnage an ““ArouT Pranos.”—E£difer Star: Under the above head a Sunday paper of yesterday en- deavors to show, at considerable length, the sSbort-comings of the Revenue Officers of this Tustriet, and brings to its aid the Philadelphia Ledger, showing that no taxes were paid in this District on pianos, and in many of the States | for the year i565. If the objects of this pape: is to give our enterprising merchant ¥ Ellis and Metzerott & Co., a good bus no- lice, We have no objection. but as its object is evidently to reflect on the vigilance of the Revenue Odicers of this District, the facts will best show bow far it succeeds. The Philade! pbia Ledger and our Sunday paper have simp- Jy overlooked the facts that the report ot the Commissioner of Internal Revenue (from which they take their -astonishing facts.”’) is made up for the fiseal year ending June 30th, isso, When it is well known that few returns | from collectors had been received by the Com- missioner, and that almost all collections for 5 were made, and the returns of collectors | jorwarded to the Department, subsequent to | June 30th, of that year. The Sunday ediior is | Tespectfally invited to examine the list of the | Assessor's office. where he will find that one thousand four bundred and tour pianos were Teturmed by the Assistant Assessors, and the tax paid thereon in 1S65. He should also bear | in mind that no piane is taxed when valued at | less than ene hundred dollars, also, that a Jarge majority of these instruments kept for | use rate below that amount. The Commissioner's report would appear to Show that no gold watches were owned in this Jiistrict, and in many of the States and Terri- tories; yet, how many a luckless tax-payer hereabouts who sports these Inxuries, well know from experience. tothe contrary. The Collector's books show there were three thou- sand nine hundred and seventy-one of these litile tickers that paid the tax last year, but the collections having been made since the re- Fort of the Commissioner was made out, it does not appear on it The Sunday paper man must wait awhile for the next report of the Commissioner, as that will doubtless snow the number of pianos taxed in this collection district for the year i-fS. | ASSISTANT ASSESSOR IsT Division. Washington, August 27 ——— OvTRacres IN THE CovuNTY.—Information was given to Lieutenant Johnson, of the Sec- end precinct, on Sunday, that on the previous night, about 11 o'clock, some negroes were committing outrages on the market wagons. Mr. Talbert, the overseer for Mr. O'Hare, was stopped near the Soldiers’ Home, by two col- ored men, who seeing that Mr. Talbert had others with him allowed the wagons to pro- ceed. Mr. Burgess and wife followed some distance behind tna wagon which was stopped by these men, one of whom struck Mr. B. with aston utting his bead badly. knocking him | senseless. They then robbed the wagon, taking & basket with six or eightdollars worth of groceries, and a bag of horse feed. The Lieu- tenant has butasmall force for his precinct, but willtake measures to putastop to these proceedings. ——_¢ CHARGE OF STEALING Cows.—Yesterday, Charles Wilson, a batcher, who had deen ar- Tested by officer Pierce upon a charge of steal- | ing a cow, the property of C. Ingle, was | brought out before Justice Walter, at the Fourth Ward station. At the same time, of- ficer Sprague seryed two warrants upom him for the larceny of two other cows, the pre | erty of James McQuiggan and Rich’d Robey. | Mr. Adams, counsel fer the defense, waived an ¢xamination, and the prisoner was commit- | ted for court in each case. Pera SSeeee Vioratine Cry ORDINANCES.—John Skee- han, a laborer, was arrested yesterday by offi- cer Thompson, of the Third Ward, for obstruc: ing @ public alley, and was taken before Justice Walter, who fined him $50 and sent him to the workboure for ® days in default of payment. | Michael Sullivan, Joseph Smooth, and James ! 1 Knox, soldiers, were a: rested by officers Tucker | and Brewer for disorderly conduct, and in de- fault of $5 fine each they were sent to jail for 60 days by Jastice Walter. oe Narrow Escart.—yYesterday afternoon, Henry Dillon, a discharged soldier, while cTossing the arch over the Tiber, at Indiana avenue, was taken with a fit and fell over into the branch, a distance of near 20 feet. Two men were at work in the branch at the time, who took him out and carried him to the honse of M. Kelly, with whom he bourded, near by, where, on examiation, he was found to be but slightly injured. . aes Tue 1.0. 0. F. Justice Morsell committed the prisoner to jail for a hearmg, nd the cow Is held by the police, to be identi- fied by the owner.
