IMPROVEMENTS ON NortH M Strert.— Probably there is no part of the city which has improved more rapidly than M street, between ‘th and 1th streets, and other improvements rei progress in the same locality. On the south side of the street is the superb resi- cence of Mr. John K. Eivans, which we have before described, now receiving the finis| ing touches. On the same side. ta the center of a Jot 70 feet by 210 deep. which has the advan- tage of being surroundad by payed alleys, Mr. Charles Kioman has just had ereeted a fine Tesidence of three stories, 44 feet square, which attracts much attention. The front is of pressed brick, and the windows, which are of the double circular head style, have neat tron | heading>, while the roof, rising from a point trom whence one of the best views ot the city and sutrounding country isto be had, gives | the building a fine appearance, which is | further enbanced by a beautiful tlower garden, | im the center of which is a fountain, bordered by 4 blue and white flag pavement, being in the front. The main entrace is reached by rea stone sieps. and on either side in front is a bal- cony. In the basement. divided bya hall of ten feet, 1s the dining room, on the left 16 feet by thedepth of the house, and on the right a sitting room, 15 by 20 feet, in the rear of which is the kitchen, supplied witn range and other lmprovements. In the rear of the main build- ing is an addition, the lower portion | being for fuel and store rooms, with water closets, and the upper portion fitted up as a complete bath room. Ascending by an easy stairway to the main floor,we find on the right the parlor and library. and on the left the draw- ing-room, the latter being I feet by the depth otthe building. These rooms are adorned with rich marble mantels, while around the ceilings are fine cornices, and in the center very neat center pieces. The stairway is of easy ascent, and the hand rail and balusters are of black walnut. In the second and third stories there are on each five large, airy sleeping apart ments, plainty but handsomely finished. each ing & wardrobe, &c. The stable, on the rear of the lot, being 24 by 23 feet, is one of the most complete in the District, the troughs being of iron and the stalls and other woodwork being cased with iron. The building has in the rear as well as the tront a fine flower garcen; | although under cultivation but a tew montbs, | looks as if it had been under the hands of a | skillful gardener for several years, andon eith- er side of it are fine arbors, while around the entire wall grape vines are being trailed. The | building was planned by Mr. Kloman, who also Iaid out his garden, and the work was | done by the following :—F’. Header, carpenter; Charles Lemon, jr, bricklayer: G. F. Hark- ness, plasterer: Beese & Semmers, painters; Nicholas Acwer, stonework and mantels: O’Hare & Noonan, plumbers and gasfitters: G. Hartig, tinner, John Finch, grainer; F.& A. Schneider, iron work; Thomas & Sons, stair- way. Adjoining this place, Mr. John W. Simms bas recently erected a fine three-story and basement front building, making his dweli- ing one of the finest in that section; and next door, Judge Wright, of Indiana, has a house of similar dimensions. Mr. J. C. Scba fer bas also recently finished a very commv- cious three-story dwelling on the same side of | the street: while opposite, Mr.S. Morself has just erected a modern front to three-story res- idence, and Mr. J. C. Harkness is remodelling bis house adjoinin, an a FRUIT AND VEGETAELE MARKET.—The of- | fering: of fruits in our market have been far | Jess this than at any former seasons. The spring was very unfavorable for fruit, and the crop has fallen shert ec: nsiderably in quan- | tity, and the qaality, especially ot the peach crop, is far inferior io the crops of past sea. sons. The peach orchards, of which there were many in this District, yielding as fine fruit as bas been at any (me offered in te District markets, have not yieided this season, andthe market is supplied from the orchards of Maryland and Virginia, and the prices are high. Of watermelons and ecanteloupes the | Yield this season is without a parallel in for- | mer years. The quantity is Temarkable, but the quality, though air, isnot equal to the melon crop of past years, which the gtowers attribute tothe mixing ef the seeds of varieties. | ‘The market is supplied from the farms of Maryland and Virgi Principally, thovgh many fine meions are obtained from the farms in the District. The principal and best source of supply is Accomac county, Va., from whence Jarge cargoes of melons are shipped daily | to this city. This season the receipts at the wharf in one day exceeded 30,000 melons, Which, added to the quantity received by | ‘wagon and rail, afforded an abundant sapply urtil the next day's receipts. The canteloupes, trom the farms of the nearer counties of Maryland and Virginia, are abundant and ot | excellent quality. The abundance greatly | Gffects the prices, and fine canteloupes bave | been purchased this season at a halt less than cost of similar melons last season. Sweet po- tators continue to be comparatively scarce: there sre brought from Accomac Co., V principally. The supply, though not aoun- dant, 1s of very fair qvality, and command Prompt sales. Irish potatoes, now in the market, are grown in this immediate vicinity. ‘The dealers conend that the farms ot the Montgomery Co., Md., will and do Prodace as fine Irish potatoes a8 are grown in the world. The tarms yield a supply nearly sufficient for use At this season, but not sufficient for stor- ing. The main supply for the fall and win- ter is obtained from distant States. There are | few better markets for fruits and vegetabies | than 1m tbe Districtof Columbia Dealers have | Giscovered that here the best fruits tind ready sale and good prices; though bad stockis not easily soid here. Aine TEERRIPLE AccipenT.—Onm Saturday atier- boon, while two painters named Cornelin < Edwards and Francis N. Holtzman, were en- gaged in painting the third story ef a brick dwelling on 1 street north, near 12th sireet, the Property of Mr. Wm. Bailey, the scaffolding gave way and precipitated both the men to the pavement, a distance of about 30 feet. They ‘Were both seriously injured, and promptly at- tended by Drs. Lovejoy and Lee. The men were then r moved to their homes, Holtzman to L. between Sid and “4th streets west, and iwardcs to Georgetown. Edwards bada leg ané some of bis ribs broken, and Holtzman re- ceived an ugly hole in tac lower jaw, besides being severely injered intervally.
