- THE EVENING STAR.» LOOAL NEWS. = MEETING OF THE SOLDIERS AND. The Philadelphia Convention Endorsed. — Last evening, & meeting of the soldiers and sauors in favor of the platform adopted by the Phil- adelpbia Convention, and opposed to the ac- ton of the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ ase ey ae was held in the Council Chamber, City and was attended by about three mengiet po sons. The meeting would doubtless have been much larger bad it not been that by some mis- take @ notice Ret pesspe esterday morn- poned. ‘Unat it had a 1. James R. O' @ was called to the chair, and Lieut. S. I. Wailes appointed sec- re Col. Jona H. Thom; stated the object of the call. It was not inteation of the orig- inators to get up a mass Meeting, but to form a permanent organization of the soldiers and sailors who were in favor of the President's Relic - There was here a Soldiers’ League, e t of which was to advance the inter- ests of the soldiers, but it had been turned into 8 political machine, to be worked for the inter- ests of the radicals, and it was for the parpose of counteracting the influence of the Leagus that it was proposed to form this association. He believed that there were yery many sol- diers who volunteered during the late war to help torestore the work of their fathers, and baving accomplished what they fought for, they do not fee! content to fight the South after the war isever. It was expeeted to organize as & soldiers organization, and rally to the pee of the principles for which ihey had ou Lieutenant Richmond remarked that he un- derstoed that the purpose of the meeting was to organizean army or: men who had fought Against secession for ‘he supremacy of the Con- stitution and the Iaws, and who propose in time to come to strike at the party whose doc- trine is exclusion. They had fought for the ilag of thirty-six stars, and they were not will. ing thata Single one should be obliterated. This was the doctrine of the president. He now stood on the same platform as he had done in 1964. He Se be that the leaguers will be defeated, and he believed that the Rad- ical party will be sunk so low that they will never hear the resurrection tramp, and it they do, it will be to rise among the Africans or Chmamen. [Lanughterand applause. } Captain McConnell said he regretted that soldiers as soldiers had been brought into Politics, but it was apparent that this move was the right one. He had understood that the S "and Sailors’ Union League was a pro- tective one, and that politics were to be ex- cluded, but it seemed from the report of their meeting in the Chronicle of the 2ist inst., that this precept had been forgotten. He was op- posed te the report going out that the soldiers in the District were all on the Radical plat- form, and he was certain that the assertion was untrue. They went into the war to fight for the restoration of the Union. He thonght that there were 2,000 soldiers in this District, one baif of whom belonged to the League, but the majority he was sure were in favor of the same priuciples Jor which they had fought. The association eculd speak for the District, and be believed that similar associations ‘would spring up im every town and county in the Union, which would speak fer them- selves. Capt. H.C. Gooding believed that it was the duty of all Union soldiers to unite on the plat- form, whieh was the sameas that for which they fought, and on which the President stood in 1864. [Appiause.] The President stands on the same platform to-day, (applause) and the radicals sey he has proved Seater to bis prin- ciples. He denied that this was so, the Presi- dent bas not deserted his principles but stood | there, it was the Radicals who had deserted their paitform. Even admiting that the Presi- dent was traitorous te his party, was it not | better so Usan to be & traitor to his country. {Applause ) Turing the war we told the peo- ple it we were fighting for the Union under & flag with 36 stars, showing that we believed that the Union was entire, and were they Row to be told thatthat flag wasalie? We be- hheve to-day that the flag ts Ppertect and the Umion is whole. Un enpren | Mr. Gooding proceeded to discuss the object of the radicals and asked what they proposed todo! Do they want two-thirds of the people ‘to tyranize over one-third ! That is not soldier like. They say that a State is im the Union and out of the Union, for some purposes in and for other purposes ont. If their rule ts to be car- ried out a large standing army must be kept in the States, the Freedmen’s Bureau must be ran, and people of the Northern States must be taxea enormously to pay the expenses. A private soldier, who said that he was one of the 7Ist New York volunteers, 2d Excelsior, remarked that be was an Irishman by birth, and bad been a radical Republican: in fact. he Was the only one in the regiment. He under- Stood that the object of the League was to Ppro- tect the interests of the soldier, but they had commenced in politics. He asked what had the radicals done for the soldiers? What had Fessend+n or Sherman done tor the soldier! He believed that New Engiand’s doctrines to- wards the country were the same as the doc- trines of Old England towards Ireland, and for that reason he now leaves the radicals. ee }] pt. McUonnell offered the following, which Was unanimously adopted - * We, the undersigned, honorably discharged soldiers and sailors, permanently or tempo- rarily residing in the District of Colum! bereby authorize our names to be enrolled as ™members of the Soldiers’ and Satiors’ Na- tional Union Association of the District of Go- lumbis.” On an invitation being given, over seventy- five of those present signed their names. Capt. McConnell offered & resolution that this meeting heartily endorse the restoration policy of President Johnson and ee ples adopted by the Convention at phia, and pledge all present to the support of the same; which was adopted amid hearty cheers. The following gentlemen were appointed a committee on permanent organization, viz:— Uspt. H.C. Gooding, Capt. J. R. McConnell, Capt. ©. W. Redyeard. Col. Jno. N. Thomp- son and Col. Jas. R. O’Beirne. Capt. E. D. Tallman, Capt. Wm. H. Nalley and Capt. B. Austin were appointed a com- mittee on credentials. A resolution was adopted to attend the great Mass meeting to-morrow night. After giving three hearty cheers for the Pres- ident, Secretary of State, and for the rank and file of the army, the meeting adjourned to ‘Tuesday evening. a Tue DEMONSTRATION To-MORReW EVEN- ingG.—A meeting of the committee of arrange- ments for the great mass meeting to-morrow night was held at the City Hall last evening.
