THE EVENING STAR. LOCAL NEWS. —_—_e——_. Chargeof Child-Murder. A SINGULAR CaszB—A YOUNG WOMAB CHABGED WITH DESTROTING THE RESULT OF HER CRIMINALITY—A BURIAL AND A REINTER- MENT. Laara Smith, alias Annie Martin, was ar- Tested by officer Leach, of the Second Ward: upon a charge of murdering her new-born in- fant within four months past, and was taken ‘to the Central Guardhouse, where she had a bearing this morning before Justice Morsell. Fanny Mitchell testified that the prisoner had room in ber house. She was unwell a num- ber of times, end the time of her confinement drawing nigh, witness uently told her to make preparations for it. Upon one occasion the friend (man) of the prisoner was present, and after be left the room witness told him that the pritoner had made no Uy og sere whatever for her confinement, and he replied that it would be time enongh in three months. About twelve o'clock tuat night witness was awakened by a noise in the prisoner's room. Witness went to the room; the child was born, nd was lying in a cloth upon 4 chair, dead. Witness washei its face and blowed in its mouth. but it was dead. Witness ing uired what to do under tbe circumstances, and by advice of others hadit buried ina box in the yard. Subsequently she told the prisoner that she ought to take the child up and have it buried decently. Prisoner got au opportunity during the absence of witness, took the child up and buried it im another place in the and planted some flowers at the heud and feet Sometime after this the prisoner had a falling out with her mate friend, and told wit: that she was glad to get rid of his bastard anyhow it could not have lived; but had it lived it ‘would have been in misery anyhow. Witness did not see the child alive; but the motner told her that she had put the child out of the we Dy, Buchicy testified that he had deen attend- ing the prisoner, and it wag understood that he sbould attend her at coufimement. Upon the might in question, a very cold, stormy night, the last witness called for him. He told her he would go when he could get bis horse up. When he went he was told that it was all over, and the child was born dead. Witness did nui see the child, but left immediately. ss The prisoner asked the summoning of another Witness; and Justice Morsell decided to com- mit her for a further hearing. The prisoner is apparently twenty-two or twenty-three years of age; is a stranger in W ashington; says she has no relatives or friends compply to for bail. She was greatly distressed by the use of the word murder, in the charge mage at the examination. paca toilet THE JOHNSON MEETING— Preparations, &c.— Messrs. J. J. Campbell, H.
