‘THE EVENING STAR. LOCAL NEWS. Tue Future a= or ee ture of George Francis Train.— Saturday evening George Francis Train delivered a lec- ture on “The Future Prospects of Ireland,” at Odd Fellows’ Hall. A large audience was present. Mr. James Regan presided. Mr. Train commenced by stating he had just Teceived a dispatch to lecture in Philadelphia to-night for the benefit of the wives and chil- dren of the Fenians now in the jails of Eng- Jand and Ireland, which invitation he had ac- cepted. He said. “As Philadelphia will have about 50,000 Strangers in iton that night, (the largest body of men that ever gathered ther in any na- tion.) and as there are 40,000 Irish in Philadel- phir, { will haye the whole crowd and the ‘whole Convention to myself the night before it meets. 1 will talk as coming irom the people, jeaving the Convention as the representative of the people to attend to the great matters of the day in their regaiar course. I will speak then as I do to-night—for Ireland and the irish. Now, there are seven millions of Irish in Ireland, about five hundred thousand in Australia. There are at leastone million of irish in Canada, and six or seven millions of the Celtic race in America, half a million in Scotiand, and two millions in London. | will just judge of their force in that city from the tact that the other day, when the Government said that they should not speak in Hyde Park, they marched in a body and tore down the Tailings of that park without firmga shot or killing & man. Now, as there are altogether seventeen millions of the Irsh race, 1 have got 2 large theme to speak upon. For a long time I bave been a friend of the Irish people. It Seems to me but the other day since Smith © Brien was on his way to Europe. I was then in Melbourne, and never shall forget the excitement when O’Brien got up and proposed the toast of America. The Irish rose, and cheer after cheer went ringing over the ocean, as if repeating the tour lines that O'Brien ‘wrote on the back of an envelope when in an English jal— «: Whether on the gallows high, Or im the battie’s van, The fittest place for man to die is where he dies for man.” “England is now shaking. She received an attack of apoplexy during the Crimean war. ‘The second attack was the Indian mutiny; and the third isan attack of paralysis by the or- ganization of the Irish societies and the Fenian Brotherhood. You have been accnst hear sneers against your race, such a: Jiave the Fenians done !” I say that they terrified England into a nightmare. “Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and in fact all the blue moses along the border, have turned paie. Canada will not soon recever from the terror and the amount expended on her volunteers tor heir defence against the Fenians. What bave the Fenians done in England! They have succeeded in bursting up twenty. thirty. aye, forty of the oldest established banks in } England. The Fenians did that, and it is saia they have done nothing. I say they have done nore to elevate the Lrish character than all the other Irish societies throughout the world. 1 | think it is something won to accomplish these | things in England. ithinkitissomething won | to make the entire Radical Congress come down upon their marrowbores and admut that | the frish are a power—[ckeers}]—when these men, who sneered © t your ure now become so polite to they never knew, or seemed to think, bef that there were six or seven millions of the irisb in this country. ireland 1 cannot speak of without also speaking of Engiand. When I once spoke be- fore I showed you she was rotten to the heart's core. with an old rotten navy. and a disaffect- | ed army, and a rotten debt. ron 40 for the consols of the English Government | to-day. Her whole system is fuilof gangrene | and corruption. After telling a numberof amusing anecdotes, | he continued :-—“Ot the population of England | there are five millions of white men who have | no votes. The entire voting is in the hands of one million. Of these sixt) thousand die of drunkenness every year, und thece are six bundred thousand habitual drunkards in the eountry. When once addressing an English sudience—an audience of the people—t said to them, Who are you! Go ask the aristocracy, and you will find that you are called the mob. ‘You tre spoken ot as the mob Their fathers called your fathers the mob, and so their sons will eall your sons the mob. There are twenty- eight millions in your national debt. Have you any ofthat! No: it is in the hands o{ three hundred thousand bond-holders. You, the people, have to do the work, while y. try, England, isa mere pasturage fo tocracy. George the Feurth one said, « them down; damn the people, will last.” “It has lasted: but to-day the news comes flashing across the wires of the great cable that ten barrels of gunpowder have just been dis- covered under the British Parliament heuse. (Cheers.} Old Guy Fawkes is at his tricks again. (Laughter. England is on the eye ot & greatrevolution. Then 1s the time for Ire- dand and the Irish. A day of retribution is coming. Engiand is now but a third class power She used to go alone; but now she calls 1p all the petty little kingdoms to her aid as allies. But she has not a friend in Europe, Asia, Africa, or America. But what I have tried to break up is the toadyism of our own race to England. 1 have on former occasions said that England ruled us by two halls—Exe- ter Hall and Free Trade Hail. Exeter Hall ‘would take a pmch of snuff and all the Aboli- tion Biz, would sneeze; the Free Trade Hall ‘would lay an egg and all the Democratic party would cackle. f{Laughbter.) The other night at Grover’s Theater there was a large meet- ing—an Irish audience. and everything ar- ranged for an Irish affair. I was invited, and beaudience, when they saw me, called for me to speak. 1 had nothing to do with the affair, eo I said nothing. Another speaker came, and then another, and finally seven different speakers were on their feet and the audience calling for me. But it was adress | circle affair, aad as | belonged to the pit I had. | of course, nothing to do with it. But what | astonished me was that several speakers got | up, and instead of making it an Irish meeting, | made it a meeting of the Democratic par: and when Mr. Norris, ealogizing the Dem cratic party. sajd that they patronized the Trish, thought it was time to set the matter right, and say that instead of the Democratic | party paironizing the Irish, it was the Irish | that patronized the Democratic party. I have | frequently spoken in the very heart of London aud brought cheers for America. When [ returned | fought the Aboliitionis« party, and the Irish all surrounded me and even some of Democrats; and the other day, when the Radicals asked me, “Why don’t you c over to us,” 1 said, thank you, but there are | too many of you in one bed this hot weather. —) In order to get the rights of Lre. nd we mus" have our own ceuntry per- fected first. In order to have Irish nationality ‘we must first haye American nationality. Perhaps you would like me to 5 to the question as itstands. [“Yes,” “yes.”] Well, Jet me ask you to go back a little and remem- ber that Abraham Lincoln said that «we must bave a reconstructed country” He laid down the programme that the Soath could no: be out of the Union. President Johnsen did the same. Every cfficial act of the two Presi- dents plainly set forth that tne South could not be out of the Union, and every official act of Cengress said the same. “In 1776 the Irish helped to fight our battle On the question that “taxation without repre- sentation is robbery,” and now we have taxed | the South some fifty or sixty millions, and yet they have no representation in the country. Andrew Johnson said to the people of the | Southern States, “Abolish slavery, repudiate | your war debt, and repeal the dct of seces- sion.” They did it all. Are they back, or is there any chance of their coming back ! How, then, unless you vote to bring back our own States, can you have an Irish nationality ? Assist usto have American nationaiity first. ‘The reconstruction plan of Abraham Lincoln is nothing more nor less than the reconstruc. | tion plan of Andrew Johnson. He has not | changed a single point. Where he stood at the commencement he stands now. 1 look upon him as the great head center of constitu- tional liberty throughout the world. [Great hoot the monarchy cheering } Mr. Train then referred to the Freedmen’s Bureau, which he denounced as even more ¢Tuel to the poor negroes than the act of Uhris- England blowing the Indian Sepoys by hundreds from the mouths of guns. He then continued his remarks at some lengih, and eoncluded by baving a resolution unanimous- | instant. Mr PETER VON £S8EN x passed electing him as the representative of Fish interests in the District ot Columbia. The audience then separated, hi ‘ in aving given *y cheers for Andrew Jonnson. ee ee EES, ELgcTIoN OF DeLecares —The judges of the election beid on Friday for delegates and alter- mates to the Philadelphia Convention, to be held to-morrow, completed the count on Sat- urday night, and Announced the result as fol- lows :—For Delegates—Jos. Several members spoke of this act as an open violation of the order of the President, that henorably dis- ‘charged soldiers and sailors should have the preference inemployment, and an 0’ on the defenders of the Union. The subject wis finally referred toa committee, with instruc- tons to inquire into the facts and report them to the proper authorities. A preamble and resolutions setting forth that it being reported that Sayles J. Bowen, city Postmaster, is about to be removed, and that reference for that office (whieh is one of a local character.) sheuld be given to one who has servea bis country, and that the name of Col. James A. Tait having been mentioned in connection with the office, they would heartily recommend his appointment, was adopted. A_ committee, composed of Capt. John McClelland, Col. Everett, Col. Owen, Major Clarke, and Dr. Craigen, were appointed to obtain signatures to a petition asking the ap- pointment of Col. Tait. ae eee Frres — Charge of Incendiarism.—Saturday night, between 9 and 10 o'clock, a musquito net hanging in John Burns’ furnishing store, on Massachusetts avenue, between 6th and 7th streets, Was moved by asudden breeze, and came in contact with a coal oil lamp and took fire, causing some confusion and an alarm of fire. The firemen were speedily ont, but the flames were extinguished with but slight dam- age, without the apparatus being required to operate. Sunday morning, at 2.45 o'clock, fire was discovered in Edward Linney’s (merchant tailor) store, on Pennsylyania avenue, be- tween 17th and 18th streets, by Officer Hill, o the First Ward. The alarm was sounded from box 45, and the firemen were promptly on the spot, and soon extinguished the flames, pre- ventmng a serious conflagration. Mr. Linney estimated his loss at $7,000, and is insured for $5.00. Subsequent examimation of the store and its contents, and remains of the property damaged, excited suspicion as to the origin of the fire, and Lieut. Hurley arrested Mr. Lin- ney upon a charge of setting fire to his store. He is held to bail for a hearing on the Lith in- stant, at 9% a.m _« THE BELLS or St. ALoysivs.—The bells of St. Aloysius were rung yesterday afternoon for the first time The bells are in the rear ef the church e beliry not being quite ready forthem. The tones of the bells were much praised, but there being no attempt at chiming, ihe harmony was not as pleasing as could be wished. These bells were cast by Joshua Re- gister,of Baltimore, and the largest is heaviest in the diocese, (excepting that of the Baltmore Cathedral,) weighing 3,500 pounds. The others weigh, respectively, 1,080 and 910 pounds. They were presented by Mesers Alexander Provost, Jas. S. Harvey, and Geo. Savage, whose names appear in the Latin in- scriptions on each. —— ARREST FOR KonpERY.—Some days ago Mr. Sullivan, druggist, discovered that he had been robbed of about $500, and suspected that during a brief absence from the store, his clerk, a young man, Dennis O’Brien, alse called Phil O'Brien, bad sold a quantity of drugs and retained the proceeds. Detectives Claryoe & McDevitt were notified and speedi- ly arrested O’Brien at Hurdle’s restaurant, on oi street, and havea prospect of recovering t of the meney. ee Petry Larnceny.—Saturday morning Anto- mia Myers was arrested by officer Rossiter, of the ist Ward, for the larceny of $3 from Francis Beckett. The money was stolenin Beckett's restanrant, The prisoner was taken to the sta- tion house and committed to jail for court by Justice Morsell. +00.
