Allen. was arrested in the afternoon train from Baltimere, at the Depot, at Broad snd Prime streets, Philadelphia, wnder circumstances peculiarly delicate and distressing. They were on their bridal tour. attended by a gay and happy escort of bridesmaids and groomsmen, to New York city, from wherce the newly wedded pair were to sail to Europe. The startling shock to the joyous hopes of the bride may be imagined, but not described. She was com- mitted to the care of friends in Philadelphia, while ber husband was removed by the officers of the law. Nearly all the stolen funds were recovered from his person in the form of United States five-twenty bonds. After a private hesring before United States Commissioner Sergeant, in the Mayor's office, Philadelphia, he was allowed a short visit to his afflicted ‘wife. He has been held fora further hearing on Saturday. Meanwhile he is imprisoned ‘Within the ponderous walls of Moyamensine prison. The country wagons were oc- cupying stands from 7th street tothe Star ot- fice, corner of 11th street. on the south side of the Avenue, in addition to the regular stands, and the gangways were crowded during the morning hoars. Came To Lire AGav Day before yester- day,an Irish woman, residing on H street south, near $y street, was taken with spasms. After a few hours she gave no signs of lite,and it was supposed by her friends that she had died. Preparations were commenced for her funeral. and as ber relatives reside’ in New York, it was determined that her remains should be taken thither. Am embalmer was sent for, andin the meantime the friends ot the deceased commenced a ‘-wake” over the The embalmer, with his instruments, arrived at the house several hours after =e supposed death, and immesiately took his paratus into the apartment where the y was lying. He turned his atiention to the cess of embalming, when he was surprised to see the eyes of the dead woman slowly open, and her hands move; andin ashort time he beard her whisper. Her friends were then summoned and atonce gathered around her. Meantime the embalmer retired to his place of | business somewhat indignant at having been deprived of a job by such an unreasonable and unaccountable freak on the partofthe deceased who “wouldn’t stay dead.” Saas See A Warnxine To DELinguentT CLERKS.—A day or two ago, a colored washerwoman com- plained to Justice Thompson that she had been washing foraclerk unuer the Government, and he owed her $4. Her child imay about to die, she went to collect the money to help to make arrangements forthe funeral. The clerk trified with Ber, she said. and she could not get her money. The Justice undertook to get the money, and the delinquent admitted to him that the account was juat, but he continued to defer the payment. The Justice directed the poor woman to make her statement tothe Uhiet of the Department in which the clerk was em- loyed. The woman did as directed, and the ead of the office told her to get & certificate from the Justice that the debt was just. She did so, the clerk received a hint,and last night the old woman reported to the Justice that she had received her a ——_o—__ | Grasp LARcENtEs.—James Williams and | Samuel Johnson, colored, were arrested yes- terday by officer Roth, of the Third Ward, for robbing the store of Wm. Chase, on 11th street, of tobacco valued at about $30. They were | seen in the act by alad employed im the store | as a clerk, who pursued them, and fired a shot to make them halt. They are well-known to the police as connected with a gang of juvenile ull tappers. They were sent to jail for a hear- ing by Justice Thompsen.
