A pleasant time is expected. —— ee The Meetings Last Night to Select Dele- gatesto the Philadelphia Cenventien. Last night two meetings were held for the purpose of electing delegates to represent the Instrict in the Philadelphia Convention of the 14: instant—one at the German Hall, and the otber in the Council Chamber, City Hall. CITY HALL MEETING. The meeting at the Council Chamber was very largely attended, and was organized by the selection of Mr. S_E. Dongias as chair. man, and Mr ©. H. Anderson as secretary. Tr. A. Liovd explained that there were two meetings for the same purpose being held, on ac-ountof a misunderstanding—the other at Geman Hall, 1ith street. Atter several motions had been made, one for the appointment of 8 committee of three to pmeeed to German Hall and ascertain whether ornot a union could be effected, was adopted, ard Messrs. A. L. German Hall was weil filled about 5 o'clock, by those coming under the call of democrats aid conservatives. This meeting was held under the auspices of the National Democratic Association. In the absence of the President, (Judge Mason.) Col. Florence was called to the chair: Messrs. Wm. Flinn and W. M. Wal- lington, secretaries. The Chair announced the object of the meet- ing. and on motion tellers and judges of the ele n for delegates were appointed—Nichola- jan. £. A. Tolson. and Thos. Thoraley, judges. and Flinn and Waj:ington tellers. vr. Binke stated that he had just lett the Oxy Hall, where there were several handred persons —. who he hid no doubt were Seart apd soul in sympathy with the obje-ts of this meeting, and as there was but little room im the hall. Contracts were esterday awarded to Messrs. Studds and Pullman, Studds and Auld, and Macon and Johnson, for the grading, bridging And masonry, and superstructure of the bridges, on seven sections of the Alexandria and Fredericksburg Railroad, including the Mount Vernon Branch. The work will be commenced at once, and pushed forward vig- orously. The contracts awarded amounted to upwards of 100.000. The remainder of the line, from the Occoquan to Brooke’s Station, on the Fredericksburg and Aquia Creek Rail- road. it is advertised, will be ready for letting out the 20th instant, when, itis expected, the whole road will be put under contract. The Aqueduct —It appears tbat further ob- stacles have been thrown in the way of the recovery ofthe Aqueduct, which was to have been given up by the Government, immediate. ly upon the completion of the repairs to the Long Bridge. The structure has been com- pleted and opened to travel for more than a week, yet the authorities in Washington re- fase to turmover the Aqueduct to the lesseses of the Canal, and everything is being done to im- pede the progress of the repairs upon it. The Lessees are determined, however, not to be thwarted in their pu , and will not cease in their endeavors to gain the entire control of the Aqueduct, anc as speedily as possible haye the Canal in navigable order, Arrested.—T wo white men were arrested in the neighborhood of Haymarket, Prince Wil- ham county, on Friday, the 27th inst., under suspicious circumstances, one of whom: is now in the jail of that county: the other made his eseape after arrest. They had in their posses- sion when arrested a sorrel horse and top- buggy. which it is believed are owned in Washington city. The buggy and horse are now in the possession of Mr. Geo. W.
