“THE EVENING STAR. LOCAL NEWS. MEETING OF THE TRUSTERS oF PUBLIC ScHOoLs—The Columbian Ci Last evening, an adjourned meeting of the Board of Trustees of Public Schools was held at the Olty Hall, Mr. Jas. P. Tustin in the chair and sll the members present —— Messrs. Walsh, Cassell, Murtagh and Hol- mead. Mr. Wilson, gee the ee to make the examination 0: P. made a rt that the copy Noone itten during “the year by four scholars in each of the grammar Schools had been selected, which wasa véry bard task, sll the penmanship so much merit. The books were to Messrs. Bryant, Stratton, Church & Co., who bave transmitted to him the following letter announcing the decision : WasnincTon Busines® Cotiecs, July 3. 1566.—J. O. Wilson, Esq.—Dear Sir: We haye carefully examined the copy books you left with us, aud have found it very difficult to se- zectthe best, as orga 2 all of them possess a great deal of merit. hey clearly follow the principle and exhibit very much taste and neatmess, being entirely free from blots and acrawis. We have reduced the number to five. and all of these are entitled to so much eommendation that we do not like to make a closer distine- ton The decision is as follows:—ist, Katie A. Mc- Bishon; 2d, Howard Hawkins: 3d, James S. Powell; 4th, Emma McGrew; 5th, Charles M. Lewis. Yours, truly, BrY nT, STRATTON, Cuvrcn & Co. Dir. Wilson stated that these scholars were trom the male and female grammar schools of the first district, and while feeling proud that his district obtained the prizes, he was sorry to say that all the awards were made to Scholars of the first district, He would state that che scholars of the other districts did re- mmarkably well, and there was much taste dis- played by all the scholars, The report was adopted. Mr. Brown, from the committee to make the award of the scholars#ip ji Columbia Col- dege, reported that the candidates from each of the grammar schools had been subjected toa ‘very severe examination, and with one or two exceptions, the examination was very tredit- able. Four of them were considerably ahead ofthe others—James E. Bangs, of the first dis- trict, Giles A. Heilprin, second distnet; W. R Brown, first district; and Henry Simpson, third district. Mr. Wilson spoke very highty of the exami- mation of Heilprin who is only thirteen years old. The committee had made the award to tbe first named. The Feport was adopted. Mr. Johnson moved that when the Board ad- journ it be until Monday evening, when a vote sball be taken on the report of Messrs. Wood- ward and Holmead, of the committee on Text Books, recommending the adoption of MeGutf- dey’s Readers; which was carried. Mr. Clark addressed the Board on the ques- } tion of readers, advocating the adoption ef the McGuffey series, and on concluding, the Board adjourned. ee eres THe TocRNAMENT.—The tournament given by the ©. q Club yesterday afternoon. on | Analostan Island, was a very pleasant affair. ‘There were about fifteen hundred ladies and gentlemen present, mcluding many army of- ficers and persons of distinction. The following gentlemen were selected by the Knights as judges for the occasion :—Gen- erals Augur. Dyer, Price, Hunt, Rucker, and Mr. Knavp At the close of the five tilts each, Gen. Au- gur announced from the stand that the ring had been captured by each knight out of his tive runs, as follows'—J. A. Rucker, Knight of Anslostan, three times; W. Gadsby, | Knight of the Ruefol Countenance, three times; A James, Knight of Woodstock, | twice, J. H.C. Young, Knight of Oak Lawn, | once, W. P. Coll the Disinherited Knight, twice. W. H. Babcock, Knight of Celumbia, | three times: A. L. Garrett, Knight of Shan- | nondale, three tim 3. Rid. McBlair, Knight of Wyoming, twice: H. Berrian, Knight ot Hudson, none; A. J. Wheelan. Knight of the West End, twice; Louis Warrington, Knight of Arlington, four times. Master Warrington having taken the ring oftenest, was duly declared the successful knight. Messrs. Rucker, Gadsby, Babeock and Gar- rett, having exch captured the ring three time-, now rode tor the honor of crowning the first id of honor, each one career, which resulted in Messrs. Rucker and Babcock captaring the Ting, and Messrs. Gadsby ana Garrett missing it. The firsttwo named then rode off, and J. A. Rucker carried off the ring, and W. H. Bab- cock missed it. This gave Master Rucker the choice of the first maid of nonor, leaving the choice of the second maid of honor to Master Babcock. Messrs. W. Gadsby, Jr., and A. L. Garrett-then rode one tilt each for the honor of crowning the third maid of honor, which was ‘won by A. L. Garrett. General Augur then presented the wreath (a Splendid one) to Master Lewis Warrington, and the successful knights announced their choices as follows -Lewis Warrington, Knight of Arlington, chose as Queen of Love and Beauty Miss Annie Dennison; J. A. Rucker, Knight of Analostan, chose as first maid of honor Miss Rosa Whiting; W. H. Babcock, | Knight ef Columbia, chose as second maid of | honor Miss Katie Garrett, and A. L. The election of directors was postponed until the second Wednesday in January next, and the by-laws amended so as to make the annual election oceuron that date.
