HE EVENING STAR. LOCAL NEWS. Tue TEMPERANCE MovEMENT. — Notwith- Standing the extremely hot weather yester- day the publie temperance meetings held at the Capitol, the Northern Market, the Wesley Chapel Mission, and near the Government Printing Office, were well attended. At the former place Rev. Mr. Gonzalves — the meeting with prayer, after which ic. J. S. Kidwell introduced Gen. S. F. Cary, of Obto. the well-known iecturer, who deliv- ered an eloquent address. Messrs. W. P. Drew and R. B. Milliken also addressed the meeung. At tne Northern Market the « Washingto- tians” held forth, at which J. S. Hollingshead — and Major W.G. Flood and Messrs. obn B. Wheeler, R. A. Fish, Geo. W. Maher, J.B. Jobuson and W. P. Drew delivered ad- dresses During the meeting a number took the pledge. At Wesley Chapel Mission quite a large and interesting meeting toox place, which was ad- dressed by Messrs. Drew, Donovan and Ma- her, and a number signed the pledge. The Meetings at this place are held on the second Sunday of each month, and they are increas- ing In interest, and it is believed are produc- tive of much good. ee QUARTERLY KeporT oF THE DETECTIVE Corrs.—The Detective Corps of the Metro- politan Police haye just made their report for the quarter ending June Wth. This force now consists of but four effective officers, with Serg't Reed in charge. The detectives are Clarvoe & McDevitt and kelly & Bigley During the quarter there were i63 robberies reported; 137 arrests were made: amonnt of property lost or stolen. $26.44625: recovered by the corps, $%,023.25; amount of propert turned over to the property clerk, $4.38¢ smount turned’ over to owners, %3,642 50: amount taken from and returned to prisoners, $3.70. Itis well ascertained by the detec- tives that in reporting property stolen or lost to them, the owners give it a value at least doubie what itis really worth. The amount reported as lost or stolen will probably exceed the real loss one third, «nd the detectives have recovered at least one half of that. $s THE SANITARY PoLice.—This section of the police, under direction of Sergeant Noonan, bave a very disagreeable duty to perform, bat a duty as important as any branch of the ser- vice, especially at this season of the year. The duty of detecting and reporting nuisances fre- quently brings them into controversies with housekeepers, few of whom admit that nui- sances discovered upon their premises are created by themselves, and the officer: me- limes are tongue-lashed fearfully by shrewish women. So tar, by a prudent course, they bave succeeded wonderfully in securing the co-operation of citizens, ind have made friends. The extreme beat of the weather has caused them to be unusually strict during the past week. but throughout that time it is creditable alike to the housekeepers and officers that in 117 eases reported it was unnecessary to pros- ecute a single individual ~~ ee HORSE STEALING.— Yesterday morning, the premises ot Mr. A. Whitney, on the 7th street road, above the Park, were entered, and a horse taken from the stable. Some colored ‘Ww & man open the stable, take out the d place a boy on it, who rode off. ney, on his return from church, as- certained his loss, and obtaining a description of the man, informed Sergeant Johnson, of the second precinct.of the fact. Officers King and Poole s ted James Covington on the charge. and taking him to the station, he confessed to taking the horse. He also informed the of- ficers where the herse was, and went with them and recovered it. Justice Walter com mitted him to jail for court. a Goon sayy» Bap MINERAL WaTeR.—In our mention ot the Owen House the her day we spoke of the excellent soda fountain as turning out a better article for the base of « soda cock- tail than some of the bottled mineral water in use. This, of course, had no reference to the excellent ayd healthful article of mineral water put up by Riley A. Shinn, Esq., and which has such deserved popularity in all this part ofthe country. His mineral water. it is well known, is man red in silver-lined appa- ratns, so that it absorbs no poisonous metallic properties. In fact. all the mineral water man- ufactured in this District we believe to be a number one article, the men conce: din its manufacture beigg respectable, reliable gen- tlemen. ——_e Karp on A FESTIVA Ratpers.—On Saturday night. while ival was In progress in a church near the old con- treband camp. 12th street, a crowd of young colored men gathered about itand ata given en: 1 made a raid into the building, helping emeelyes to cream, cake and other refresh. ments, and causing a general stampede ot the company, many of whom jumped from the window in the wildest confusion. While this was going on Sergeant Johnson, of the second precinct, made a descent on the raiders and captured two, who gave their names as Wm ‘Ware and Peter Rollins. Yesterday they were fined $5 each by Justice Walter. ——$¢-—-—___. Scurrosep ATTEMPY aT SUICIDE.—Satur- day night, about eigh: e’clock. a young man named Abl, was found in a water closet at the National Hotel, in a stupified condition. He was taken to a private room, and a physi- cian called to attend him. He was partially restored to consciousness yesterday morning, and was removed to bjs residence, 64 street, by roundsman Kelly and patrolman McUol- #an, of the Fourth Ward. A vial labelled “laudanum,” was found on his person, and it was evident that he had taken an over dose. The young man has been very much de- pressed for some time past, being out of em- ployment —— FUNERAL.— Yesterday afternoon, the funeral of the late Jasper McCoy, took place from the Western Presbyterian Church, and was large- ly attended. The services were conducted by Rev. J. M.H. Lemon. of Union Chapel, Rev. P. H. Sweet, and Rev. J. N. Coombs, the pastor in charge. After the services at the cburch the remains were taken to Oak Hill Cemetery; New Jerusaitem Lodge of Masons and Friendship Lodge of Odd Fellows’ at- tending, beaded by the 5th U.S. cavalry band. THE Does.—In consequence of the killing of & number of mad dogs within the past two weeks, Mayor Wallach has issued the usual proclamation, requiring all dogs found raon- ning at large within sixty days from the date ofthe proclamation without being securely muzzled shall be killed. It is an unpleasant duty for officers to perform; but the safety of the community Teqnuire- it, and they will en- torce the law strictly. Col. Moore, A. (. M., and from the sale of which the Government lealized $439. The laundresses who occupled these buildings have been assigned quarters at Rush Barracks and other barracks in the city. SS DRowNED.—Yesterday morning, about six o'clock, Timothy O*Neil went to the Potoma: above the Long Bridge, to bathe, and w: drowned. He was subject to spasms, and it supposed that while bathing he was attacked with a spasm. The ig | did not desire an inquest to be held, and the body was deliy- ered to the brothers of the deceased.
