_EVENING STAR. Bitten by « Dog—The Stone. [From the Attica Ledger.j One nigh: the latter part of jast week. as Dr. W. L. Leyman, of this place, was making a Professional call at the house of 4 Mr. Hoiraes, m Warren county, be was attacked by two * belonging to the place, and while endeav- @ring to defend himself, fell. when one of the dogs bithim severely on the right arm. On the doctor's arrival athome im his condition, Bis family became uneasy, and thinking per- baps the + tes tuat bit him was rabid, urcea him t go to Terra Haute, and apply the «mad stone” im the possession of Mrs. Taylor, of that place. The doctor bad no tears whatever, and always regarded this sione as a humbug, but, finally, consented to goto satisfy nis family. Un bis arrive! at Terra Haute he proceeded to the house of Mrs. Taylor aud had the apptics- non of the stone made. The lady informed him that if he was pitien by a rabid animal, ibe -tone would adhere ta thirty minates. Af- ter three Fours of faithful application it failed to take bold, and Mrs. Taylor announeed, as tbe doctor had thought from the first, and as als (be circumstances indicatéd, that he wus was not bitten by a rabid dor. While there, ho er, the doctor witnessed an operauon of the “mad stone,” and gleaned sneh facts re- carding it from reliable citizens of Terra Haute, as to dissipate the skepticism which he con- fesses he bud always heid regarding the effica- cy of this stone as an antidote for hydrophos ba. He met at Mrs. Taylor’s 2 man from Illinois, who bad been bittem by a mad calf, ana to whom the stone adbered for thirteen bours. drawing from the wounded par: a green'sh colored matier, which it failed to ox. from the devtor’sarm. When the stone me filled with this fuidit was souked in warm we-er fora time, when it would again adhere and absorb with its original force. Dr. Leyman also conversed with a gentie- ™m.n in Indianapolis who had been bitten by an) cmistakably rabid dog, and nsed thisstoue with success. Mrs. Taylor, who is an old resi- dentof Terre Hate, and known by the citi- zens of that place as a lady of worth and cood uding, tes that the stone has been need in thousang T faited.
