The front of the building was nand- Somely illuminated, and the interior, as it was lighted up, presented a baautiful appearance, the sides and pillars being beavily draped with National and State flags and festooned with @vergreen-, while many of the stands having Portraits of our military and naval heroes and statesmen neatly arratged. The Marine Band under Professor Scala occupied the music stand lastevening. In the centre of the hall is the speaker's stand, around which, about 8 o'clock, the immense crowa present assembled to hear the inaugural s: hes. * The assemblage was called to order by Hon. b. B. French, Commissioner of Public Baild- ings. Who introduced Hon. Henry Wilson. of Massachusetts. The latter, after making a few duced General Ban«s, and he aiso mim short address. Other addresses wert made by Major General 0. O. Howard, Hoa. S. Mckee, of Kentucky, and Hon. H. S. Laor, of lodiana. He wished a great natienal church could be provided, not by law, but by the consent of the American people, so that in this church there could be a pew for every orphan and a pew for. every loyal man from every State. tour religion be national, and this orphan asyinm be national. Let them be the controlling and supreme idea which runsthrough alj our na- tional institutions. We know what can be done in & great work of this kind. Then let us con- sult our hearts free from anger, which has ex- asted im them too long. Let the breach be healed, and let difficulties be done away, that we may become a great and happy people.
