A cylinder in this vault is used as a receiver for the fragments of the canceled notes, where, by the use of an alkali, which is beated by steam, the ink is eradicated and the notes are converted into pulp, which is sub- sequently made into paper. Yesterday, at the hour above named, the commissioners ap- Pointed for the pur} were anxious to see the pulp then in cylinder, and Messrs. Jobn Q. Larmon, the foreman, and two of the employees—Wm. Waller and Wm. Burch— goton the eylinder to take off the man-hele that it might be seen. The man-hgle was lifted, and immediately some of the pulp, with hot water and alkali, was thrown out. Mr Waller slipped and fell, and the hot water saturated his clothes, and he was badly scalded. The fluid striking the hands of the other two. they were also scalded, but only slightly. Mr. Waller was immediately sent to his resi- dence, on F street, above 2th, and Mr. Burch to his residence, on 14th street. Mr. Larmon Was not injured so badly as to necessitate him to stop work. Mr. Barch will be able to be outin a few days, but Mr. Waller will prob- ably not be able to resume work for several weeks. —_e—_—_— Bips OrENEp.—To-day, at noon, posals for grading and gravelling 6th toe be- tween Pa. avenue and G street south, were opened at the Mayor's office, City Hall.
