The meeting was understood to be called for the purpose of Mr. H. N. Easby for the mayoralty and nomi- Mating & ward ticket favorable to his elec- tion. Resolutions indorsing Mr. Easby had been prepared, and for convenience in voting, printed tickets with the names of the candi- dates on the Easby ticket were laid upon, the table. Therefore, be it Resolved, That we suppert no man for office Who is egainst the Eight Hour system. Resolped, That Horatio N. Easby having proved by his actions to be a firm supporter of the Eight Hour system, is hereby declared to be our choice tor Mayor at the coming elec- tion, and we pledge ourselves to use ail hon- orable means to secure his election. Cries of question ! question ! tellers! tellers! Divide the house! The Chairman called to order. Venerable Workingman.—Mr. President, I move to strike out he second resolution. Dr. Peck, Secretary Harlan introduced Bishop Amés, who spoke of the origin and growth of the church, stating in the course of. his remarks that there were now over 13,000 Methodist Churches in the country. a moet Willey next addressed the meeting, and was followed by Bishop Simpecn. who stated that this centenial year people should make an offering, and no more appro- priate offering could be mad¢ than asanctuary. Rev. Dr. DeHass followed Bishop Simpson, and stated that he had received $5,000 from a . friend in Baltimore, given in the name of Gen. Grant to aid ig the erection of a new church, «the Metropohtan,) and he urged that-contri- butions should be made freely. During the evening $27,550 were collécted and subscribed; of which $24,300 were for the Metropolitan Church, $2,050 for the Dickinson College, and: $1,200 for the general fund for aiding educational institutes, &c. = Mathew G.
