EVENING STAR. | Brincine HIMTOTRE Txsr.—There was a | curious scene lately at a town meeting in Ber- | up The gathering was com) ef co «llors. butchers, ana doctors, and the eount ds like something from the dark ages. | Acthe ¢ nelnsion ofa speech by Prof. Vircho urging ° necessity of instituung microscopi- cal @x mimations of pork, he handed the Preside ata piece of emoked sausage, ana of meat that had been recognized as trichinous. ‘Thereupon a veterinary practitioner named Urban arose and combatted the whole thing as adelusion. Tricbinw, be said, are the mos: barmiess animals in the world. It is only doctors without practice who make a noise about them, in order to create some occupation for theinselves, etc. There was great inter- ruptop, and the President was obliged tostop the vererinarian. Pre. Virchou and Mason demanded an apology from Urban, and Mason ehallenged Urban to eat some of the sausage on the President's table. (Great applause.} Urban wishes to explain. The meeting calls »p bim to eat. e had not spoken of Ber- in doctors, [eat, eat) but of those of Hedersla- ben. (Eat.) He would first see whether the Sausage contained trichinew.” (Great laughter and continued cries of eat. eat.) Whereupon Urban suddenly seizes the sausage on the President's table, bites off a piece and eats it, and leaves the hall forthwith, amid the ap- plause and laughter of the assembly. Five days later Urban was ill in bed, bis arms aud legs were paralyzed. Whether he bas died fince is not reported. He was doubtless a great fool, but if he dies it will be little short of murder that the town meeting committed. A Srxcurar Divorce Case.—A curious ease of divorce was developed in the Supreme Court of New York Saturday. The parties in the snitare Rev. Joseph A. Saxton, of Nor- wichton, Connecticut, and his wife Anna A. Itappears on the papers that Mrs. in February of this year, through r named Mr. Howes, applied to the Supreme Court in New York for and obtained 2 divorce from her husband on the ground of adultery. Itis alleged by the defendant thar he knew nothing of the divorce until he saw it in the newspapers, and he now seeks to open the decree and be allowed to come in and defend humself. The case develops some strange facts relative to the procuring of divorces in that State. Judge Barnard remarked t he would | in fu e e all witnesses in divorce cases examined before him in open court and not Tankine Taines Easy had anelection in Providence, Khode I the other day, Mr. Doyle, indepe andidate, was Mayor by 314 majority over the editor or Providence Journal.
