A delghtiul entertainment is expected. aa ra of olman . rT Tur Bait mw Motion—Me¢ring in the Fourth Ward —Last evening. a meeting of the citizens of the arth Ward was held at the Council Chamber, City Hall, for the purpose of nomi- nating candidates for Alderman and Uouncil- men. The room had been engaged by the House Carpenters’ Assecintion; but they ad- journed over until to-night, that the citizens’ meeting migh: be held. tt having been rumored that some of the friends of Mr. A. Lioyd intended to put him on the track as the Fourth Ward candidate for the Mayoralty, it was expected that a lively meeting would be the result. Mr.T. J. Frazier called the meeting (whictr was quite numerously atignded) to order, and on his motion Alderman Asbury Lloyd was called to the chair, Captain W. H. Nalley was elected vice president, and Mr. H. Lyles secre- tary. a Sir. Lioyd, on taking the chair, said that they had met to select candidates for the offices named, to serve the ensuing year, provided Congress does not take away the charter, which ) — thought probable, but he could not ipipk so. Mr. Frazier moved to proceed to the selection ot candidates. : Ospt. W. J. Gary offered the following reso- lution, stating that he did not offer it as a feeler, but from pure motives: Resolved, That we heartily indorse and tg of the official course of our present ayor, Richard Wallach, and we hereby nom- imate bim and pledge ourselves to re-elect him to the same position at the ensuing election. And further, we will not vote for any candidate for Aldermam or Common Councilman who fails to approve the above resolution. Mr. Frazier.—I move to lay the resolution on ihe table. Several voices — Take the vote,” «I moye the resolutions be adopted,” &c. The Chair stated that the resolution should ~~ entertained, but he did not think that it was exactly pertinent to the cail for the meeting. Mr. R-S. Davis said the resolution was ill- timed, and that it contained the word nomi- sate. This meeting ceuld not nominate a can- didate for Mayor, for it was a ward meeting. Capt. Gary said that he had yet to learn that the people of the wards should remain passive on the mayoralty question, even if in ward meeting only. As for his resolution nominat- ing the present incumbent, he would say that be had already been nominated in the hearts of the people. He would, however, withdraw ibe last clause. - :, Mr. Frazier called for the question on laying the resolution on the table, and the yote being taaen by ashow of hands, the Chair agnounced it lost Dy a vote of 42 to 44. About this time there was much corfusion and cails for tellers. Mr. E. J. =o moved that tellers be ap- pointed; we certainly implied a doubt as to the correctness of the count, and he thought the chair having made the remark coring the count of hands “only one hand, gentlemen,” was not over sure in regard to it. Mr. Frazier rose toa point of that the vote baving been announced by the Chair it was final, and moved that the meeting proceed to the selection of candidates. Several voices—«Tellers, tellets,” «Recon- sider,” &c. The Chair stated that it was not according to parliamentary rule to appoint tellers after the vote had been announced Mr. R S. Davis moved to reconsider the vote. Mr. Kiopfer asked a gentleman if he did not call for tellers betore the yote was announced. Vorces—“Yes 1 did.” I’m calling all the time.” &c. . . Mr. Jobn A, Langvoftit said he understood the mevting to be for the purpose of nominating Alderman and Councilmen, but tat itap- peared tuat Mr. Wallach’s friends came here to choke off the meeting. He was a Wallach man.and had intended to vote for him, but because of the action of his friends present he Would not vote for him now. ter. Mr. Frazier moved to Jay the whole su ject on the table, but after sume confusion, he ‘withdrew it, and said that for the sake of har- mony he would make no opposition to the ap- pointment of tellers. Mr. T. J. Frazier and J. M. Johnson were a inted tellers, who reported 52 in the saimanee and 2 in the negative. The an- pouncement was received with applause. Mr. Langvoidt moved to adjourn, which ‘was voted down, and the meeting proceeded to select a candidate for Alderman. Jonn P. te (the present incumbent.) ‘W. W. Moore, James English, Wm. H. Nalley, and Elijah Edmonston were named. The secre’ read 4 letter from Col. Pepper jendering his ks to the citizens for past fa- vors, and declining to be a candidate { election. Capt. Nalley also declined. Messrs. Frazier and Joseph Hamlin were ap- pointed tellers, and the vote being taken by lot. resulted as tollows:—Elijah Edmon- 2, 101; W. W. Moore, 14; James English, 3. Mr. Edmonston was thereupon declared the nominee, amid applause. Nominations were made for Councilmen, and on balloting the result was announced as fellows Charlies H. Anderson, %;: W. W.
