FORT \-NINE ROU NDS—PLUCK AND ENDURANCE This morning about 6 o'clock a prize fight took pisce at the White House Landing, abont 25 miles down the Potomac between Samuel Collier, of Baltimore, and Horatio Bolster, for- merly of New York but iately a resident of this city, for $300 a side. his match was made onty about two weeks sinee and consequently cur Washington rep- Tesentative bad but little training, he not hay- ing been as long known to the ringas his oppo- nent. The parties to the affair and speetators, num- bering nearly 3v0, left here at one o'clock this Morning, on the steamer Wawaset. It is said to have beep one of the most orderly crowds ever ascembied on such an occasion. On reach- ing the landing there was some delay in select- ing the ground; but at about 5.30 o'clock the parties agreed on a place in the woods, and the Ting was staked. The men were im good trim, Weighing, when stripped for the fray, about 140 pounds each, but Colter to be in ‘& little better condition than . All being ready, they nimbly stepped into the rifig, and the fight commenced. The first blood was awarded to Collier, and the men each showed extraordinary plack and some excellent spar- ring. . On the third or fourth round Bolster injared Bis left band it is said: and om the*ninth roand, broke his right hand on Collier's left ear, and some of bis friends expected that he would give in; butdisabled as he was, he came to ume on the eext round and continued to fight, making 49 rounds: at the end of which his sec- onds threw up the sponge and Collier wes de- ¢lared the victor. The fight lasted 55 minates, Both were were oie bruised, Bolster in the face, Collier in the Y, but not so severely as Was expected; and although Bolster was whivgec. he was declared even by Collier’s en. tobe a man of extraordinary pluck, and his backers were highly pleased with him. Collier's seconds were Clinton James and Jack Fitzgerald: Bolster’s seconds James Auley and John Lazaras, and the referee, a maa named Gedfrey. Bolster’s backers are loud im their expressions of admiration of bis nerveand pluck in fighting so long after he Was virtually disabled, and ‘thinks that if he could bave saved his “maulers” intact, the re- sult would haye been different. Wilkes, of Wiikes’ S and a correspondent of the New York Chipper were present, and the sporting men of New York, Philadelphia, Boston, and Baltimore were well represented. Ow Meetine or THe Boarp or TrapEe—Devel- ts im regard to the Merchants’ National ‘ank.—The Board met last evening at hailf- past 8 o’cleck. Mr.:J. R. Elvans brought to the attention of the Board the circumstances attending the sus- Pension of the Merchants’ National Bank of this city. He wished to make a statement in reference to the affairs of that bank, which he was enabled todo, having for about a year been 3 director of the bank in question. He Was prepared to show that the failure of the Merchants’ National Bank was caused bi fraudulent dealing, and he thought the busi- mess men of this city owed it to themselves to take hold of the matter and have it thorough- ly investigated. Ther was. always a liability of failure, through unavoidable causes, at- tending all banking institutions; but when they fail through frand and swindling, as he did not hesitate to say was the case in the pres- ent instanee, he thought thgt it was time seme- thing should be done to arrest theevil. He stated that the Merchants’ National Bank was Organized chielly through the instrumentality of Mr. Huyck, who, ashé was not @ man of means. desired only that his services should be rewarded by being elected to the posi- tion of cashier, with a salary of $2,000 per apnom. The bank was incorporated, and Mr. L. B. Bayne was elected ident, and Mr. Huyck cashier. Whilst Mr Elvans was 4 director he frequently examined the books of the bank, and found therein many inconsistencies, and a general carelessness in keeping accounts. Accounts were often kept on slips of paper in pencil, which were needed t complete the footings on the books, but which were not put in ink, as was explained ‘to him, because they represented sums in transit, and. in case of error, might need to bechanged. Abouta year after the commencement of the bank it was proposed to elect Mr, Hayck resident, which was done, Mr. Elyans and’ . Mayfield opposimg the measure. Mr. Elvans then declared that he could have no confidence in Mr. Huyck as president of the bank, and signified his intention of disposing of bis stock and withdrawing. Mr. Bayne answered Mr. Elvans that in this country majorities ruled, and as he held the greater amount of the stock, Mr. Huyek should be the President. Shortly after the election of Mr. Huyck, Mr. Snow of the National Intelligencer, ‘was called upon by the president and asked be did not wish to purchase some stock. Mr. Snow said that he did, but declared his inabil- ity to purchase, not having the means then at band. He was informed by Mr. Huyck that that could all be arranged. Mr. Snow then calledon Mr Elvans, bought the stock and gave a draft on the Merchants’ National Bank of Baltimore, where he had no deposits, for $5,000, but when presented, the draft was paid. Mr. Snow then signed over the $5,000 worth of steck to Mr. Huyck, which transfer was never entered on the books of the bank; and now Mr. Snow is responsible for $5,000, when he has no real interest, and has paid no money atall. He thought that a p1 sifting of the Matter would throw light on a great deal that ‘was mysterious. Other national banks declare an annual profit of from $50,Uu0 to $50,000, bat this bank declared a profitof only about $30,000, and was doing as good a business as most others. He did not believe that a single state- ment had been made to the directors by that bank, that had not been falsified, and he thought that this might account for the means which enabled Mr. Huyck to board with his family and servants at an expensive hotel, cost of at least $10,000 3 year, and keep a Poy and horses, be he pe 9 cost 00, on a salary of #2, q hoped the board would take some action in the matter. ‘When banks fail through the dishonesty of its officers, nothing should be left unaone to bring the authors of the calamity w punishment, and he had no hesitation in img that the suspension of the ‘Merchants’ National Bank ‘was one of the most astounding frauds ever committed on any community. After some little discussien on the subject, ‘Without taking any further action, the Board adjoarned. a Boarp oF Heattu.—The Board of Health held their regular meeting at the City Hall yesterday afternoon, Gen.
