~ EVENING STAR. W. D. WALLACH, Editor and Proprietor. WASHINGTON CITY: 5 SATURDAY..................MAY 5, 1866. S7 READING MATTER ON BYSRY PAGE. eER OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELE- GRAPHIC AND OTHEB MATTER. 4 PIECE OF CHRONICLE ENTERPRISB. It bas grown to be quite® common trick as | an advertising dodge or to conceal the losses of a waning business, for parties to make a bo- gus return of business income to the Revenue Department; deeming the few dollars of tax Fequisite a judicious investment. We see that | the Chronicle appearr >be sufficiently “hard ' up” to compel it to resurt to this questionable piece of enterprise. 1t parades a set of re- turns it has made to the Imternal Revenue De- partment, designed to show that its advertising receipts have increased during the last quarter (since it took ground against the administra. tion) and were largely in excess of the receipts of any other city paper. Does the Chronicle zeally hope to impose Upon asingle soul in this community by such a statement, when its own advertising colamns give it ®& positive contradiction! It is well known to every one in Washingfon that busi- ness of all kinds has been greatly de- pressed for the past three or four nfonths- The newspaper business has shared in this general dullness; for business people in Wash. ington bave not yet as a body learned the wrinkle that in dull times it is especially their interest to advertise their wares, and thus in- crease business. The Star's advertising col- umns show that we have suffered less, rela- tively, than other papers published here, yet ‘we too have felt it, asshown by our revenue returns, to the extent of some hundreds of dol- Jars, as compared with the previous quarter. Our city cotemporaries nave, with the excep- tion of the Chronicle, in their returns truthfal- ly, we believe, expressed their share in the city’s current lull in business activity. That the Chronicle, under the circumstances, and with the contradiction in its own advertising columns, sheuld undertake to maintain that it has not only held its own, but that its business bas absolutely increased, is an astonishing dis. play of the ostrich tactics of concealing the bead and leaving the bulkier portion of the body exposed. There is not a reader of that paper who has not noticed the great falling off im its advertising, and the substitution there- for of “dead-horse” matter—Congressional di- rectories, &c., &c..—and “ouble-leaded “Occa- sional Letters” to fill up with. Had the Chron- icle contented itself with parading a humbug Statement of its own business we should not pave felt called upon to notice the matter; bat when 1t attempts to bolster itself up to the in- jury of its neighbors by comparing its own returns with their truthful statements, it be- comes necessary to expose its stupid piece of ebariatanry. We have therefore taken some pains to carefully examine its advertising col- umms, day by day, for the last two quarters to afford a test of comparison. It will be seen that during the quarter end_ ing March 31, (the quarter in which it claims to have considerably increased its advertising) it bas experienced a steady falling of. This is not only true of its daily paper but «Iso of the Sunday Chrontcl¢. as will be seen by the sub- joined figures, showing the namber o¢ its new advertisements through each month of the two quarters: No. of Sunday. No. per of Sunday q Daily. No. of Daily. day of Da da an Total number. Average No. per! Average Total ist quart’r| 2496> 643, 3139 Total 2d quart’r Qi) We 81. Total No. for 6 months ....... Se much for the Chronicle’s claim of an macrease upon its own business. Now for its comparison with the business of the Star. We bave shown above that the total number of new advertisements in the Daily Chronicle for the six months ending March 31, was 4.507, or an average of 29 per day. The number of new advertisements in the Star during that time was 9,(83, an average of 58% per day. The Chronicle, im its statement, mentions only the daily papers of the city, but even should it design to include the Sunday Chronicle—an en- tirely distinct issue, however, from its daily— it will be seen that its aggregate number of new advertisements for that time, Sunday and daily, was’ but 5,551, or an average of 31, or (Sunday and all) but httle more than one-half the Star's average per day for its six issues per week. These figures are beyond impeachment, nd within the reach of ready verification by any one disposed to examine the advertising columns of the two Papers. We leave their Moral to the candid reader. ——————— *Gndv.[B’s.—The dramatic season at this Ppop- ular place Of amusement closes this evening. He says further that this bank was designated by the Treasury Depart- ment as a depository of public funds in the hands of Government officers and agents; that whenever the Treasury gave him a check on this bank, he left it therein to be drawn on, as he had a right to do, and never drew funds from other depositaries to place in this bank until recently, when he did so at the request of officers ef other national banks in this city, on their statements that the amount so drawn and deposited (about $200,000) would enable the Merchants’ Nationcl Bank te overcome some temporary difficulties, and thereby secure to the Government the other amounts deposited therein. He represents that he desires a ther- ough investigation. His books and papers are now in the possession of the Inspection Divi- sion ot the Paymaster General’s Office, where they are being thoroughly examined. i iJ w SRSREEEESeono ey INTERNAL RevENUE.—The receipts from In- ternal Revenue to-day were $765,052.70, and the total receipts for the week ending to-day were $5,914, 316.21. sce XXXIXTH CONGRESS—FIRST SESSION.
