LOCAL NEWS, "AMUSEMENTS, &c.. TO-NIGHT. Groves s—Murdoch as “Hamlet” to-night, an announcement which will, no doubt, fill the th Caste "RY —Last nigbtof the attractive Pro; me of the past week. Change vi pro- gramme ou Monday. Ts GUT Hour Demon. : WORKINGMEN'’s @TraTio’.—Last evening, tue third of a series of Mass meetings Under tar auspices of the Wo: kingmen’s Convention, was held at Island all, and Was quite a snceess, the hail being crowdes to overflowing. The up-town work- anen formed in line at the Patent Office, headed by Wasver’s Band. in the tollowing order :— | Ts, Marshaied by Capt.J.H. Dubant; ©. Whaley; Granite Cutters, ; Carpe ters, Mr. ond marebed over in a body, carrying in the dine severa! transparencies appropriately in- serited The Navy Yarders, to the number of stbout S*. beaded by field music and with ry nes, marched up under the marshal- ‘ssrs. Join Sinclair, Wm. Cross, and Jobn Hardestie. In the hail Heaid’s American ss Baud was stationed, and during the evening enlivened the occasion by performing rirte music. bair was taken by Mr. Wm. R. McLean, ‘ of the Con vention, who briefly stated vention thought that the agitation on ot + Eight hours of labor a legal Was beneficial to the cause, and Hon. Sidney Clark, of Kansas, who day's w intrody Barrett; | | others obtained those the expres-ed bis gratification that he had the Opportunity to speak on this subject, which exci'ed bis sympathy, and which, in his opin- jon, was founded upon sound principles of social, political, and national economy. He proceeded to note the objections to the move- ment, and denied that its adoption would diminish the productions 2nd enhance the prices of the necessaries of life; that it would Produce idleness and dissipation, or would result i Mr. Clark con- cluded by advising the workingmen not to aliow themselyes to be flattered and cheated by demagogues and politicians, as they had in the past, and promising to use his influence in fur ering the movement. Mr. H. N. Easby followed, stating that he looked upon the movement as one of the great. est reforms attempted in modern times, and as 21] retorms had been opposed, they should ex- pect oppesition to this. it was singular, how- ever, that much of the Opposition came from a SO unexpected, as from these whose were closely allied with the working. bosses who have risen from tt this country, however, none knew » long be was to be a boss, forthe employer day was the employed the next. He ar- gued that the researches of intellectual men have proved conclusively that one hour or one hour and a half employed outof the twenty- tour would be sufficient to clothe, support and enable every individual under the sun to enjoy social happiness and intellectual pursuits. If one or two hours are then sufficient, how much more sufficient will eight hours be. He was a brother workingman himself—a ship earpen- ter—and he therefore understood the necess.ty Ot relaxation to the body and rest to the mind. He reterred to the workingmen of forty years ago who could not make such an intellectual Audience as this, for their time was taken up 4m labor irom starlight to starlight, and also to ihe advantages of the ten-hour law, arguing that the eight-hour bill would be still more beneficial. Hon. Mr. Whaley, of West Virginia, was in- troduced, and after stating that he knew what manual labor was, afier werking hard until above 36 years of age, he said that he favored the movement because he could see the benefits to arise irom it, It is of the utmost importance to the working man that this movement should be successful. He had introduced a resolution au the House for making eigkt hours a legal day's work in the Government Printing office as a feeler, and he was gratified that so many approved of the measure, representatives trom ali sides having eome up and asked that it be made general. It was not generally knows that thousands upon thousands in this city work only from 9 to 4, many but one hour between those hours. He was astonished that such opposition had been made against the running of cars on Sunday, the only day in the week im which the working man has an opporton to go out with his family. He expccied shortly to speak in a place where he would at least have the advantage of sending bis sentiments to the mark, and im conclusien he said after expressing bis hearty approval of the object, that no man who works |i 4 bours per day can have his health beyond 40 years of ae Messrs. H.C. Preuss, John L. Hayghe, Rich- ard Emmons and James P. McKean followed, atrer which the secretary read letters from Lion. W.T. Willey, of West Virginia, Hon. John Hogan, of Missouri, and Hon. D. K. Ashley. of Nevada, Senator Willey, after stating that he has not aturely considered the subject, but with the partial attention given he is favorably im- pressed toward the movement, says:—“1 am ©f the opinion that the eight hours faithfai manual labor each day areas many asa due regard tothe health, strength, and physical capacity of men would ordinarily justify.” Lor Jobr Hogan, after expressing his sym- pathy with the movement. which he regards 2#s tending towards the amelioration of the la- boring masses, says :—* The use of machinery in our country has to so great an extent dis- sced mere physical labor that it now b:- es & necessity to have skilled and educated to secure our national ascendancy. The essity of self-cu! ® ts self-evident, and the intellect of our mechanics and labor- ibg Masses may be so improved as to become valuable and useful is palpable, has been fully proved by the large num- ber who, unaided by mere school educat‘on, have attained to high and often envied scien- iific positions.” Hon. D. R. Ashley states that although many years bave passed since he had “personaily {eit the need of such a Jaw, but I do not forget that the man who lives by manual labor bas social cares and public relations which require mo: and mental training, such as he can never re- ceive while he remains the mere slave of capi- tal. and beneath its stringent rale is taxed to the limit of bis muscular capacity. Man is crested to be more than a motive power—a chine—and the greed of capital to mul- eis really gained by changing service he baron to the millionare. You will not ¢ succeed, but discuss your rights, and nd soon governments, though tardy, ‘The meeting thereupon adjourned. ath eal Center MARKET To-DaY.—Heef, best cuts, © lb., 25¢.; next, 15a2vc.; Salt Beef, 5a2ue.; Driea Beet duasse.
