The Kecorder requested to be, and was excused from attend- ance for the evening, and Mr. Hyde, Vice Pres- Scent, took the chair. Mr. Hyde, from the standing committee, Tesolation favor of Jesse D. Bright: . The com- mittee material alterations in the res- olution autherizing the Mayor to contract for putting down b: ts, for keeping them in repair, and for tapping water mains; and offered @ substitute authorizing the Mayor to make a eovtract with Wm. Whelan & Co.; adopted. ‘The committee asked for more time to consider } the resolution in regard to the election of gas | lighters; ted. The following were received trom the Council :—A communication from the Mayor, recommending Mr. H. D. Mr. Simms doubted the right of the other Board to refer to this Board a matter which had originated with the Common Coun- cil. Messrs. Thomas and Cropley knew of no | precedent for such action, and suggested that the ordinance be Iaid on the tabie for fature consideration. The Chair said taat as the other Board had taken no action, this Board could mot act om the matter, except by framing an ordinance that would meet the requirements | of the case. After some farther discussion, on motion of Mr. Cropley, the ordinance was laid over. An ordinance for amending an ordinance for the government of the new Market House, approved May 27, 1865, was taken up, and after @ spirited debate between Messrs. Thomas, Simms, and Cropley, the vote was taken upon its passage, and it was lost by the following vote: — Yea—Mr. Simms. Nays — Messrs. Hyde, Cropley. ‘fhomas, and Hieston. An ordinance for the improvement of part of West street, Mr. Hyde objected to the third Teading, * and the ordinance {faid over under the rules. A resolution in favor of Walter S. Mr. Barrett offered a resolution making addi. tional speropriahon for dredging the chakael 41 the Potomac river. Mr. Goddard, from the committee to confer with the Corporation cf Washington, reperted that the commit- tee bad dome all that it could do to induce that Corporation tomake an appropria- tion of £25,000 for the channel. They were@s one time sanguine of sucess, but have little hope Yow. The bill was passed, but witha rider providing that the Corporation of Georgetown shall raise the canal bridges to let boats through to Washington. It would seem that by spend ng $25,000 or $50,400 we may get $25,000 trom Washington. Mr. Libbey remarked that he bad consulted with some of the prominent ™members of the Aldermen of Washington, and | he thought that the main bar preventing the cor- dial co-operation of that Corporation is a mis- apprebension in the minds of the people that the Corporation refuses to raise the canal bridges in order to prevent the trade Passing to thatety. This is a misap; rehension, for it ‘would be to the interest of Georgetowe. if the beats of all kinds could pass through and in- crease trade. Kemove this misapprehension and we may obtain the co-operation of Wash- ington The resolution was referred.
