It appeared that Susan was formerly a slave, and several pears ago she married a colored man named Themas, with whom she lived for 2 time. until ber mistress took her home and sent ber dowm South. During the absence of nis slave wife, Thomas lived with his consin Ann on a marital footing, and recently Susan, baving become tree. made her way to this city, where sbe found her husband domiciled with Ann, in the alley in the rear of Odd Fellows’ Hall. She at once assaulted the latter, who procured a warr: for her arrest. Susan says she don’t want her husband, but she left some furniture with him, and objeetsto Ann using it. unless she will pay $27 to her. Thomas Wishes to remain with Ann, and Ann will agree toremain with bim, but says she can’t aiford to pay $27 for him. Notwithstanding the condition of the streets, and the drizzling rain, q cite a large mumber of persons gathered about Franklin Square this forenoon, among them Union League Council No.2 of the Seventh Ward, and many belonging to various associations which would bave been in place bad the line been formed. One remarkably sharp flash of kkghtning was followed by a thunder clap resembling the report ofa gun. Simultaneous with the lightning there was a single tap on the bell of the German Catholic Church, 5th street. This morning we hear no report of damage, except, perhaps, a slight injury to the nerves of some who were attending to the tele- graphic instruments at the various offices. They account for the ringing of the bells at the sta- tions and the single tap on the 5th street alarm bell, by supposing that the hghtning struck the ‘wires of the telegraph and passed off at the stations. = . IxPANTICIDE.—On Saturday night officer Blulloy, of the Second precinct, found lying in 2 peol of water, on P street north, between 40th and lith streets. a newly born bright mulatto child, which, notwithstanding its head beimg covered with clothes and partly sub- merged in the mud, was alive. Johnson took it to the station, where a Jady nursed it, but it ‘ws too far gone, and notwithstanding medi- <ai attention, its death took place yesterda. morning. Coroner Woodward held an inquest, when & verdict was rendered that 1t died from the effects of neglect, exposure and cruelty, at the bands of some persous unknown. ———_-—___ STEALING CuHIcKENS.—Yesterday, officers “ramp and Stincheomb, of the First Ward, arrested John W. Morris and Sarah J. Gray- son, negroes, for the larceny of five chickens, the property of Eliza Hines. They had killed the chickens and prepared them for cooking ‘when the officers arrived at their house. They threw the heads of the chickens into a stove; ‘but the officers got them out before they were burnt. Looking around the officers saw a chest, and the negroes refused to open it, say- img there were no chickens in ere.
