——. 6 (Pe eQOetere oe EVENING STAR. _ A Family of Seven Persons Murdered. ‘The most horrible tragedy ever known to | bave occurred in Philadelphia came to light yesteraay afternoon. An entire family, con- | sisting of Christopher Deering, aged 35; his | wife, ageG 36; Mies Kealing, 3 lady cousin, aged +5, and bis tour children, named James, aged * ‘Thomas, aged 5, Annie, aged 4, and Emma, aged i4 months, were found brutally murdered upon their premises, on Jones’s Lane, near the Point House road, in the First Ward. All the persons named bad their throats cut and their brads horribly mangled. The murder is supposed to have been committed on Satur- Gay, a: Mr. Deering was last seen on the morn- sng of tbat day. The mother and her four chil- aren were found in one corner of the barn, covered with dirt and hay. The father and Mies Kealing were found lying close to the outside of the barn, and like the others, cov- ered with dirt and hay. The discovery of the murder Was not made tll about 2 o'clock Wed- nesday morning. The bodies were in a parti- ally decomposed state, showing evidently that several days had elapsed nce the per- petration of the atrocious deed. Mr. Deer- mg was @&@ eattle dealer, and greatly res ted by his neighbors. His residence is in the suburbs of the city, where houses are some distance apart, which accounts for the affair net being discovered before. 1tis confidently believed that the person who committed the herribie deed is a young German about 25 | years of age. who has been in the bi 4 of Mr. Deering for several weeks past. le has not been seen about the place since Friday. ‘The instrument used in murdering the family Was 4 very sharp axe, subsequently found in the house. With this he struck them in the | head, and afterward cut their throats. A small , boy. about I4 years of age, who was employed by Mr. Deering, is also missing. He is also | =uppesed to have been murdered, and his | bedy thrown down a well on the premises, or into one of the many ditches which a>ound in | the neighborhood. The murderer has not been | captured vp to the time of the present writing. The herrible affair has created great comm tion throughout the entire city of Philadelphi: Plunder seems to have been the sole object. Horses and cattle im the stable were feund in a famiehing condition. The Ledger, in its account of the terrible tragedy, says the bodies of Deering and his ece were found im the barn, covered with y, Sud the others in @ corn crib, similarly covered.
